Chapter 16: Hula Hooping Martians

Sorry guys I know this is out of order but I had to write another chapter.

"What happened?" I asked. At first no one responded, but finally a girl I recognized as Delilah came forward. It took me a second to realize who she was. Three years had made her a lot taller and her hair got a lot longer. I could tell she was wearing makeup (which she never wore before) and suspected that she was probably a sophomore now (not that school existed anymore) and was probably about 16.

"A huge group of competitive hula hoopers from Mars came to the space station and tried to kill all the jump ropers.  The want hula hooping to be the only sport left in the universe.  They tried to kill all of us, or at least turn us into hula hoopers.  You were strong and wouldn't submit to them, and said you would stay a jump roper. Then they all tried to kill us, and used poison they thought would do more harm then it did. The poison put us all in comas. Some of us woke up kind of early, some a little late, but the majority of us woke up about a month ago. We missed three years of our lives. We thought you wouldn't make it, and were so glad you woke up."
I looked around the room. I started to recognize all of the people as my teammates, but older. I guess they had a month to recover and get used to this life. Millions of questions filled my brain, but only one mattered.
"What about Kylie?" I asked. I couldn't lose her. So many people I had loved were dead, but she was the only person who really mattered.
Delilah winced. "She hasn't woken up."
I began to sob. I thought I had lost her so many times, but she had lived through the other tragedies. I couldn't lose her now.
The others tried to comfort me.
"Don't worry Madelyn, we didn't think you would wake up, but you did.  I'm sure the same thing could happen with Kylie.  Now come on, let's get you caught up."
She held out her hands to mine to help get me out of the bed.  I got up with her, which was surprisingly hard, probably because I hadn't walked in three years.
She starts explaining that we are in a new medical space station and are heading towards earth. The zombies have been exterminated, but a mob of vampires are wandering the Galaxy. My "jump rope boyfriend" had ended up actually being a vampire and had been banished. There were older teams that had survived that were now adults and were leading the expedition.  As we reached the end of the hallway, we stopped at a bathroom where I could wash up.  I looked at myself in the mirror.  I was hurt 13 before the coma, but I was 16 now, or so I assumed, and I had changed.  My black hair was a mess, and needed to be trimmed, and I was probably 2 inches taller.  Darn it.  I wanted to grow more than that.  My face was dirty, but looked older.  The only thing that had stayed exactly the same were my light blue eyes.  They were the same as Kylie's.  I washed up and Delilah offered me new clothes, which was nice so I didn't have to wear a hospital gown.  I brushed my hair (which took longer then I remembered, probably because my hair was longer and thicker now), and we headed back out to see the other jumpers.
We walked into a huge open room with probably 600 people there.  It kind of reminded me of nationals.  There were people from different teams everywhere, people jumping, and people just talking and generally being happy.  These are the survivors, I thought.  The last people in the universe.  I couldn't really understand how people could be happy after so many bad things had happened, but once I thought about it I kind of understood it.  We should be happy that we are alive.  So many people have lost their lives recently, and it's going to take thousands of years for humans to recover, but we're going to do what we can.  We'll be happy, and the human population will slowly grow, not die off.  I knew no adults had survived from the aliens three years ago, but people who used to be children were now adults.  I realized that Alexandra and Sara from my own team were probably adults now.  I kept thinking about this until we reached the far end of the giant room, and I saw my teammates.
"MADELYN!!!!" My friends Jessica, Meredith, Sammy, Alex and Julianna screamed.  Even Mary and Gabi, who usually aren't huggy, enthusiastic people, were screaming and running over to me.  Everyone had changed so much.  We all hugged and talked for a while, and then they said they wanted to go make new friends and get jumping.  Alex said he had hear a rumor that when we got back to earth they were trying to hold nationals, and we all got super excited and decided to get practicing.  Everyone went to go get ropes and stuff, and I turned around to find myself face to face with Derek.

I had completely forgot about Derek.  There's no room for romance in a world  of constant tragedy, but there's also nothing to keep you going but love.  I wanted to forget about Derek, but there  were less than 1000 people in the universe, so it wasn't like I could avoid him.  He had turned from the cute 13 year old I knew in 7th grade to a handsome young man.  He had big muscles (I have no clue how because we'd all been in comas for years and most people had gotten thin and week) and his hair was long enough so it almost covered his eyes.  His eyes met mine, and I didn't know what to do so I hugged him.
"You're alive," he said, not letting go.
"Yeah, but Kylie's-"
"Shhhh! Don't worry about Kylie!" He exclaimed.  He kisses me and let go of me, took my hand and started walking me down another long hallway.  The smell of cinnamon filled the air, and I saw a group of jump ropers from Mexico walk by.

We reached the end of the hall, and there was a small grey door that was slightly opened.  Derek opened the door, and there I saw Kylie lying in a bed with her eyes wide open.  "Hi, sister," she whispered.
I started crying tears of joy.  Whatever else happened didn't matter, because Kylie was okay.

***

A few days later I things are starting to get back to normal.  I start walking over to see Kylie in her room, and the door is open just a tad.  I push it all the way open and see Derek and Kylie kissing.
