Chapter 1: Just Madelyn
Hey guys!!! This book is actually written by 6 people: me, julie_anna21, and my five friends: Maryloedel, Lilahgirl337, Jessihufflepuff311, Tigergirl013, and THE_IRON_QUEEN. Each person writes a chapter, and their name will be at the bottom. We don't know what's happening until it's our turn though, so be prepared for lots of excitement and surprises about our amazing sport, jump rope!!!
I let out a groan as, once again, my rope falls out of my hand and lands on the floor. I'm in the middle of showing my single rope routine, and I've already missed four times, and dropped my handle twice. The Regional Jump Rope competition is only three weeks away, and my single rope routine is mess. At this rate, my twin sister Kylie is gonna beat me!
That's right. I'm a competitive jump roper. Its like the coolest sport in the world. We compete in speed and freestyle, it's all so awesome. I prefer freestyle though, as does everyone on my team, but I still make sure that I practice speed enough to beat Kylie. That's the fun part about having an identical twin sister. I get to beat her. Well, I'm sure it's not as fun for her, since I always beat her at competition. Our pairs routine is really awesome though. We have the same jumping style, and it's easy to practice together. Sometimes we fight over what tricks to put in, but since we can practically read each other's minds, we generally agree on things.
As I pick up my handle, my teammates try to make me feel better.
"It's ok!" Kylie calls. "You can do it!"
I race through my last combo and miss again. I catch my rope on my foot in my ending pose and plaster a fake smile on my face. Usually after someone shows a routine we raise our hands if we have a comments on how they can make their rountines better.
After my routine, Jennifer, our coach, asks, "Any comments?" Every hand in hand in the room raises. Was it really that bad?
I looked to Kylie for her comment.
"Slow down, Madelyn," she says with a smile. "Your routine is really hard and really good, so just slow down. If you don't rush you won't make as many misses. Also, look up and smile. Remember that presentation is half of your score!"
Presentation. Ugh. My routine is hard, the content is so good, it's just stupid presentation that always gets me. If it didn't exist, I probably would have won first place at Nationals by now. I was aiming for first place at Regionals this year. Last year I got third, and Kylie got fourth, but I had three misses, and Kylie had nailed her routine.
After Kylie's comment, everyone else's hands go down. I guess they all had the same comment. That's probably a good thing, because I only have one thing to work on.
Kylie's routine is next. It's not nearly as hard as mine, but she looks up, smiles, and flows through her routine at a good pace. Her wavy black hair bounces in a high ponytail as she jumps. How could two people that look so similar have such different styles of jumping? Kylie nails her routine, just minutes after I had done mine with seven misses.
Kylie was the last person to do her single rope routine, so then we move on to pairs. We get a few minutes to practice, then Coach Jennifer says, "Time to show! The twins are first!"
The twins. It would always be Madelyn and Kylie, or Kylie and Madelyn, or even just, "the twins." But never just Madelyn or just Kylie. After my singles, today was one of those days where I wanted to be just Madelyn.
But I went up there with Kylie anyways and we performed our pairs without a miss. That's twin power.
And that's then winning routine. The one with both of us, not just Madelyn.
