Chapter Two

My eyelids felt heavy. I tried to will them open, but it was no use. My entire body ached and I had no desire to get out of bed. Instead, I pulled the covers back over my face.

Memories from the bridge interrupted the darkness, causing me to bolt upright.

Crap. What happened?

That odd boy had done something to me. I remembered being at the bridge and then everything went dark. I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts to see if I could remember anything else, but there was nothing. My eyes slowly scanned the room where I laying. It wasn't my room. My breathing quickened as the realization settled in that this room was one I had never been in before. The long, narrow space had stark white walls on three sides. The fourth wall was glass and looked out into what appeared to be an empty hallway.

A small glass cube sat perched near the bed on a tiny table. I reached over to touch it.

A thin bolt of electricity jumped out of my hand and connected with the smooth surface; a young woman's face appeared before me. It was almost as if she was floating right in front of my face. "Hello, Captain James. Can I get you anything?" she asked in a polite voice.

I stared back in silence, wondering what exactly she meant.

"Who is Captain James?" I finally managed choke out, looking around to see if anyone else was near. Someone who might respond to "Captain James," but it was only me in the room.

"My apologies. Shall I let Captain Samuel James know you are awake?"

"Who is Captain Samuel James?" I leaned forward. Nothing was making sense right now.

The face stared back at me without responding.

"Please, can you tell me about Captain Samuel James?"

"Yes. I can tell you about Captain James. What would you like to know?"

"Who is he?"

"He is Captain Samuel James," the woman's voice responded. "Shall I let him know you are awake?"

"No, no, that's not necessary. Thank you," I sputtered, a little too quickly, trying to provide some sort of answer that wouldn't get me in trouble. I didn't want this person or computer to notify anyone that I was awake. The woman disappeared. I stared at the now-empty space.

Where did she go? What was happening to me? Had I finally gone crazy? She had said his name: Samuel.

Throwing back the thin white blanket that covered my body, I couldn't help but gasp. I was no longer wearing my school clothes. In their place was some sort of pearly white jumpsuit. The thick fabric fit snugly to my lean frame. It was strangely soft.

I quickly felt around my body, inspecting to make sure all of my major parts were still attached, picking up my right arm and then dropping it back down to my side. As I moved it again, the fabric shimmered in the light.

I remembered now. The mystery boy had been wearing something similar when I found him at the bridge.

Where am I?

My mind was racing, but nothing made sense right now. Mentally, I began to prepare myself for what could happen next.

In the distance, there was the faint sound of someone talking. People!

I scrambled out of the bed, but then slowed down and cautiously approached the door. I moved out into the hallway, heading toward the voices, pausing only briefly to look back to make sure no one else was near.

Keeping my back to the wall, I scanned every room I passed, looking for clues as to my location, but each seemed identical to the one I had just walked by... and all were empty. Maybe I was in some sort of hospital or institution for crazy people.

Eventually, the voices faded leaving a dull hum in the heavy air. I turned the corner into another room, but instead of finding another empty room, I found him. The mystery boy, Samuel, was sitting alone, hunched over a circular table in the middle of the room. Behind him were several large glass screens mounted on the wall.

He looked up at me sheepishly. "Hello Esa. Did you sleep well?"

The brief feeling of uncertainty inside of me turned to anger. "What? Who in the —?" I lunged forward with my arms ready to attack. I wanted him to understand what I was capable of doing. He hadn't kidnapped an ordinary human; he kidnapped me.

Samuel watched calmly as my palm came into contact with his shoulder. I could feel the energy flowing from my hand into his body, but it didn't seem to have any sort of effect on him. Normally, that move would have caused my target to flinch multiple times until it could no longer stand the pain and fell to the ground.

"Esa, would you like to have a seat?" Samuel brushed off my hand and then pointed to a nearby chair. Our eyes locked. An uncomfortable silence came between us as we stared at one another, both silently willing the other to be the first to make a move. Finally, he asked, "Do you feel okay? Are you hurt?"

I didn't immediately answer. Instead, I marched to the chair and sat down without breaking eye contact.

Samuel let out a loud sigh.

"Who are you? Why are you asking how I feel? And, why am I dressed in this funny suit?" I pinched at a piece of the fabric. It was something I would never have picked out to wear myself. It was too tight... and white.

Ignoring my questions, Samuel chuckled. "Welcome home, Esa."

I stared into his eyes. They were a crystal blue, like the color of the water around a tropical island. "Home?  This is not my home.  I don't know who you are or where you are holding me."

He slowly scanned my body, inspecting every inch as if he were a doctor examining a patient. "Esa, you don't remember me?"

"No."

"You don't know where you are right now?" He asked as he scratched the back of his head.

"No."

"Let me make this simple," a deep male voice said from behind me, making me jump. "You left us."

Turning in my seat, I found myself staring at the muscular torso of another boy. He, too, had pale skin and almost white hair. His angry glare caused me to shift uncomfortably in my chair. "We were a team and that didn't seem to matter to you. Esa, you abandoned us when we needed you the most."
