THREE

The night was becoming really chilly, so Tari began to shiver a little. He tried to warm himself up by rubbing his palm up and down his arm, but before he knew what was going on 'the lady' searched her backpack and tossed him a blanket. This made him to begin to wonder if she told the story to everyone who tried to jump off the bridge. It was a sad story, Tari couldn't deny it anymore. Being raped and living with it? Sounded really hard. Tari felt the most painful part was being put off by her friend.

"Well, I finished school quite all right and then went to be an intern for one of my mom's rich brothers," she continued her story, still staring into a blank space. But, she began to tell the story differently. Tari could hear the shaking in her voice. It was like she wanted to cry, but was trying to hold on tight. "He would always be so mean to me and accuse me of my mom's death. He'd called me a slut and a hoe. He'd call me different mean and unkind words, telling me he wished I had gone in place of my mom." She paused. "Sometimes, I wished I did." She sniffed, making Tari squint his eye to see if she was crying, as the bridge lights were dim. She wasn't hiding it at all, she let the tears roll down and she kept on sniffing, but she didn't stop her story. "Some days, when he came back late and drunk, he'd at times get violent and beat me up. If I struggled or tried to escaped, I only worsened my punishment." She couldn't hold it in any longer and she folded her legs and pulled them to herself, burying her face in between them as she cried and sniffed. Tari didn't know what to do, so he simply pulled her into a side hug as he tried to console her. 'She had really been through a lot', Tari had been thinking to himself when she said, "And he still had the audacity to rape me, telling me that, wasn't it what I always wanted?" But, it came out muffled. Tari stayed silent and kept on rubbing her back, clockwise. He wanted to say something encouraging to her, but his mouth felt too dry to speak, so he decided to keep shut.

It wasn't long before she gently pushed Tari away and freed herself from his grip. "Lost my dad two years ago, when I was still jobless, which I lowkey still am and that was when I became more consistent at this bridge." She adjusted herself, hugging her legs tight. "It wasn't like I came here to commit suicide. No. I just felt farther away from my problems here. It's like they follow the wind away whenever I am here." She paused for a while, then cleared her throat. "I'd see young and matured people come to this bridge late at night. Some would cry and cry, then jump off. Some would think for a while, then jump off. Some won't even think or cry, but simply jump off. Some would only cry, but wouldn't jump. But, most, do jump."
