Chapter 12

Sammy was in heaven; scarfing down handfuls of fries while mercilessly devouring his large hamburger, only occasionally pausing to let out an onion and pickle-infused burp. Carter and Lee couldn't hide their shock and slight disgust as he sat right in between them.

After having been stopped by Han and Maurice, they had decided to go somewhere and explain themselves to each other, Sammy naturally volunteered they head over to the nearest Burger King and no objections were made. Though nobody had quite his appetite, their party nonetheless ordered a group meal.

"I think I've just lost my appetite," Trish pushed away her basket of onion rings.

"Don't mind if I do!" Maurice swiped them from her grasp.

"I wouldn't mind figuring out what the hell is going on here," Carter pointed his finger at Trish. "You've been smashing a triad all along?"

She frowned, smacking his finger away. "He's not a triad and we've been dating, pervert."

"Yeah, I'm on your side," Han said, relieved to hear that Trish still saw him as a love interest. "I mean, her side. If you're on her side, then technically I'm on your side too."

"We'll only be on your side if you cooperate with us," Lee opened his burger to pluck out the pickles. "I was contacted by the Chinese and American authorities that activity from the Triad was threatening the country and could most likely spread to other countries as well. They sent me here to investigate a series of building explosions, the last one was at some random-"

"-apartment," Trish finished his sentence, making him raising his head to look at her. "They were trying to kill me..."

"You're one of their targets?" Lee questioned. "Do you know what they want?"

"They're not after me, personally. They want to hurt my father, but I haven't figured out why yet."

"Isaak O' Day? What could the Triad have against him?"

"Well, he was in a war with them not too long ago, that is, those in Oakland. Their leader had plotted with my dad's right-hand man to sabotage a deal he had with the NFL in order to get that deal for himself and takeover his rival's territory. But Han and I stopped them and the other triad families ended up turning on Ch'u, so he... took his life away."

Sammy started coughing on his fries. "Ch'u's dead?!"

"What about your father's right-hand?" Lee pressed Trish on, taking out a pen from his pocket and grabbing the nearest napkin he found to write on.

"He turned on my dad, murdering people left and right, he killed my brother..."

"But Trish saved my life," Han immediately added with a corner smile, hesitantly looking Trish's way. "Mac almost killed me too."

"I knew it was you!" Sammy unexpectedly yelled, getting up from his chair and pulling out a pistol. "You killed my grandson! He was gonna own the whole city!"

This alarmed the other customers in the restaurant, quickly being drawn to the commotion. When they noticed the gun, some shrieking was heard and chairs were being pulled. The cashiers behind the counters told everyone to evacuate, some ran away too while others stood still and watched what would happen next.

Carter tried grabbing Sammy's weapon. "Sammy! Put the gun down!"

The old man ignored him, raising the canon against Trish's forehead. "How could you? He was so young! He had his whole life to live! You're as selfish as your father!"

She was taken aback, seeing tears of rage forming in his eyes. "I- uh, I..."

Before he could pull the trigger, Lee quickly intervened by tackling the elder, sending a couple of stray bullets flying.

"Get them in the car! Now!" He yelled at Carter, wrestling with Sammy on the floor.

His friend gestured their three guests to follow him, ducking down to avoid getting hit by one of Sammy's bullets. Customers were still rushing out the Burger King, screaming with fear and calling the authorities. They made their way to the parking, avoiding a few cars as they sped past them in a great hurry. Unlocking Maurice's van, Han followed Trish into the backseat while Maurice took his place as the chauffeur and Carter sat next to him.

"He's gonna be fine," Carter turned back towards the couple. "Probably kicking that old man's ass as we speak."

Han noticed Trish staring at the ground, her breathing becoming heavy and her heartbeat louder.

"Trish? Are you okay?" He slipped his hand into hers.

"He's right, I'm selfish," she gravely said. "I killed him, Han."

"You saved me," he tried to find her gaze, but she remained in a frozen state. "There was no other way."

"I hate that I had to do that," Trish closed her eyes, trying to forget Mac's overall intense and intimidating presence. "I'm no better than him."

"He was a monster, Trish. What he did to your dad, to Colin..."

"But I killed someone... and I felt good about it."

"Look at me," Han placed his hand on her cheek and turned her head towards him. "You could never be what he was, you understand?"

Maurice nodded. "Yeah, I got a couple of bodies myself, but you don't see me going all Scarface on everyone. Mac, though? Yeah, he was a crazy motha-"

"Not helping," Han glanced back at him, gritting his teeth, than turned back to Trish. "You did what you had to, there's nothing wrong with that. Besides, you looked totally badass."

Just then, Lee opened one of the car doors dived in the backseat. "Let's go! He should be out of our way."

Maurice hurriedly started the engine and rushed out of the parking lot, into the streets. "Damn, what'd you do to him, dog?"

"Just handcuffed him to the table," he answered, short of breath. "He put up a good fight though, maybe you're a better sensei than I thought, Carter."

"Hell yeah, I am!" Carter said triumphantly. "I've evolved when you were gone, these hands are weapons of mass destruction. Reagan would kill for these."

"Uh, where exactly are we going?" Han asked, wrapping Trish under his arm and pulling her into this chest.

"The safest place I can think of right now is my room at the motel," Lee answered.

"Let's just hope Carl doesn't find us there," Carter said while looking out his window.

Han raised his eyebrows. "Are you talking about Carl Raines?"

Carter looked back at him. "Yeah, you know him too?"

"Not directly, but I know he's done business with a lot of gangs, the Triad too. In fact, I found out that he's been dealing military weapons, smuggling them with crates of expensive Cuban cigarettes as a cover up. He goes under the alias Liu Shu, Maurice helped me piece it all together."

This made Trish raise her head up off Han's chest. "Really? Since when do y'all get along?"

"Ever since we had a heart-to-heart guy chat the night you ditched my man Dim Sum," Maurice smirked. "I got some serious dirt on you now, girl."

"The hell did you tell him?" She stared Han down.

He slightly moved away from her. "Nothing, I swear!"

"Yeah, but back to Carl, though," Carter chimed in. "You're saying he's this big arms dealer and stuff?"

"It was him all along," Lee slapped his forehead. "I can't believe I was this stupid."

Carter frowned at him. "Huh? Whatchu mean?"

"All those explosions targeted specifically small businesses, with a few exceptions," Lee started to explain. "Threats were repeatedly sent to the authorities telling them to stay out of it, that it wasn't their fight. Carter, remember when you told me that behind every elaborate schemes, there's a rich white man controlling it all?"

"Oh yeah, I did say that."

"Well, Carl's our guy, not Isaak."

"Damn... You sure, though?"

"The man tried to kill us."

"Yeah, I guess you're right."

"He said that he needed to leave for a business trip, so he could be anywhere by now. We need to locate him as soon as possible."

"Well then, I know exactly where we need to go."
