O' Happy Dagger

Juliet awakens from her faux slumber, sitting up to see Friar Lawrence standing there. She inquires about her husband. The friar points to where Romeo's and Paris's body lay, looking first to her cousin then next to her dear Romeo on the ground in an eternal slumber. She moves to Romeo, a stiffness in her joints, refuses to exhale another breath. She kneels beside the body and hovering, reaching out to touch Romeo's pale cheeks. She holds in a cry, her shock taking over. Her shaking hands caressing his skin as if her touch could wake him.

"Come, child, we must hurry," The Friar urges, fearing the watchman's arrival. Juliet refuses, staying by Romeo's side. Friar Lawrence, not wishing to take any chances, he leaves Juliet in the tomb, getting out as fast as he could, realizing that Juliet had no desire to leave the tomb anytime soon.

Juliet spots the empty bottle and begins to connect what has occurred. "If only my eyes had opened a moment sooner, I would've been in your arms reveling thy warmth. Forgive me for not coming to sooner but allow me to join you quickly." She takes the bottle, her hands trembling, bringing the bottle to her lips to find it empty.

"Gone, not even a drop has he left," She cries, looking at her parted beloved, she traces his features. Her finger smoothing the crest of his lips. "So warm..." She kisses Romeo's soft lips. "If only, you had left me poison to spare. I would be happy with you."

Glinting, in the corner of her eye, Romeo's dagger comes into view. She looks up to the heavens on high. Surely this was a sign that she should be with him. This was her chance to lay with him in eternal slumber. She takes the blade, brings it up, and closes her eyes. For minutes she sat in that position unable to bring the knife down into herself. The dagger starts taunting her. She gulps, shaking and quickly brings down the dagger.

Instead of piercing her, the dagger hit the cool stone ground making a sharp clink sound that echoes about. Juliet bursts into tears. "Forgive me, Romeo." She cries out. "For the one, you fell for is a coward and cannot follow you into the great beyond." She lays her head on Romeo's chest weeping, wishing for this all to be a dream. Her love, her first love was dead. Not too long ago, she was willing to give up everything for him, run away with him. If not for their rivaling families none of this would have happened. The two would be together and be wed under the soft sunlight.

For hours, Juliet lies upon Romeo's chest in sorrow. A sharp feeling takes over her heart. She begins to curse the those who responsible for this travesty, their parents, their families. She clenches her teeth, anger and hatred welling inside of her. The glinting dagger comes into view once more, this time a plot of vengeance unravels. "If not meant to pierce me, then you shall pierce my enemies. I'll make them suffer and show them the pain they had wrought upon their own children. I swear I will not stop until my last breath."  She declares openly.

Juliet takes the dagger and relinquishes Romeo of its holster. "Until we meet again my dear Romeo." She gives him one last adoring gaze before standing to her feet. She finds herself unsteady, like a newborn calf. Having been kneeling for so long, her legs now like jelly. She leans against the cool stone wall that sends a chill down her spine. A few minutes pass until she can feel her legs again. She then leaves the tomb.

Outside, Juliet feels the soft sunrise upon her skin. Her anger calms and she comes to realize a flaw in her plans. She couldn't just return home after a night away, not without repercussions? There were consequences for eloping and if caught things would be more complicated now that Romeo was dead. She had to hide somewhere and fast, the light of day only meant that their families were that much closer to finding out the truth.

Juliet then hears the rustling of leaves. She holds her breath. She had forgotten about the watchman. She looks to the left then right, trying to figure out in which direction she should go. The rustling comes closer and closer, in a moment of fear she runs going as fast as her feet could carry her.

Juliet stops running when she reaches the road, as far from the tomb as she could possibly be. She travels down the road hoping it would lead to somewhere out of the influence of the Capulets and the Montagues. As she walks in the warmth of the sun, Juliet threw away her family name. She, no longer a Capulet, vows revenge on them and the Montagues, and no matter how much it takes, she was going to make sure that such a feud would never again rise between the two. They'll rue the day their pride and consternation got in the way of her love.
