Chapter 5 - Good or evil?
Sometime later..
"Miss Gupta, bring a glass of water to my cabin," Khushi heard her boss's command. She looked up to see him, who had stepped out of the elevator with an elder man by his side, and they halted their steps some five feet away from her desk.
"Do you want anything else, Kaka? Chai, ya coffee?" Arnav asked as he shifted his attention to Mohan Kaka, who was holding a bag with his clean clothes, on his hand.
Mohan Kaka shook his head with a smile filled with gratitude for the way Arnav was treating a mere servant like him with respect, "Nahi nahi. Paani hi theek hai (no no, water is fine for me.)"
Arnav narrowed his eyes at Mohan Kaha before turning his head to Khushi, "Miss Gupta, chai and snacks too."
"Arey beta.. iski kya jaroorat hai-"
"Chup.. bilkul chup!" Arnav raised his index finger to his lips, gesturing Mohan Kaka to not say a word now.
Khushi smiled widely, watching the old man feeling all nervous and shy to be offered tea and snacks by Arnav. But before Arnav scolded her for standing still, she started walking towards the elevator when Arnav called her back.
She rushed back to him obediently.
"Miss Gupta!" Arnav rolled his eyes, and Khushi pouted, confused, thinking to herself, "Ab maine kya kiya? (What did I do now?)"
"Call the peon to bring here tea and snacks. You don't need to go downstairs to the cafeteria for this," he said in an annoyed tone.
Khushi bit her tongue and hit her forehead in response, "Ye toh main bhul hi gayi (I forgot this)," then she frowned accusingly as she bluntly asked, "Why didn't you tell me this before when I went to order coffee for you?"
Arnav looked at her incredulously, "What the.. Was I hired here to teach how you are supposed to complete your tasks as a personal assistant? And watch your tone, Miss Gupta, you're talking with your boss right now.. I won't tolerate this behaviour of yours."
Realisation that she indeed crossed the line dawned upon her, as she looked down ashamed, apologising for her behaviour.
Arnav ignored her, taking Mohan Kaka with him to his cabin. Khushi rushed back to her small cabin and quickly called the cafeteria to send water, tea, and snacks to their floor with a peon before more scoldings came her way from her short tempered boss.
*****************************************
Inside Arnav's cabin, a highly irritated Arnav complained to Mohan Kaka, who sat on the chair opposite his, "See.. this is the result of hiring unprofessional people with no experience in their field like her. You were getting emotional by thinking I'm firing a girl who was struggling with her wedding's expenses, and I was thinking logically and practically when I took that decision."
"But Arnav beta, if no one gives her a chance, then how would she get experience anyway?"
Arnav frowned, getting irritated with Mohan Kaka too now, who was hell-bent on defending his good for nothing except making coffee PA, "Kaka, please.. don't start giving me lectures. Handling a multinational company like AR is no joke, I needed a highly competent professional to assist me. And you want me to sit here and act like a Godfather to that girl when there are so many other talented and competent people out there who rightfully deserved this job as my PA."
Mohan Kaka lowered his eyes, ashamed, "Sorry beta."
"You should be sorry only. I'm only tolerating this girl because of you," Arnav narrowed his eyes at him, "Now give me my clothes."
Mohan Kaka handed the bag over to him, still not having the courage to look directly into Arnav's eyes now. Somewhere, he also knows that Arnav is right in his point of view, but when he heard Anjali saying how Khushi wanted to work to help her brother with the house and wedding expenses, he just felt bad for this girl and he couldn't help but feel the urge to help this girl achieve what she wanted in her life.
"Don't think too much. Otherwise, you'll lose the remaining few strands of hair you have," Arnav said sarcastically, glancing at a silent Mohan Kaka lost in his thoughts while changing his shirt.
Mohan looked at him, and he gestured through his eyes for Mohan Kaka to look at the TV screen behind him. Mohan Kaka followed his gaze, watching Khushi completely focused on her laptop, typing something seriously.
"She's not a lost cause. At least till now, she completes all the tasks assigned to her. But sometimes, she forgets to use her brain," Arnav said.
Mohan Kaka couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle after hearing Arnav's last line.
"She's funny," Mohan Kaka said.
"A comedy disaster!" Arnav added sarcastically, "She's the one who spilt coffee on me."
Mohan giggled silently, making Arnav look at him incredulously, "Laugh.. laugh! After landing me in trouble, you're enjoying it."
Mohan Kaka sat straight and serious, not wanting to upset his Arnav beta anymore.
Arnav kept the stained shirt and waistcoat in the bag and handed them to Mohan Kaka as he finished putting on the clean clothes.
"Accha main chalta hoon beta (I'll get going)," Mohan Kaka was about to get up when Arnav glared at him, asking him to sit quietly on his place, "Wait for your chai and snacks. Then you're allowed to leave."
Mohan smiled emotionally, staring at Arnav, who occupied himself now with work on his laptop. This little boy was taken away from him when he was just 8 years old, but he still remembered his Mohan Kaka when he returned to Mumbai and still treats him respectfully. Although he looks changed now, his behaviour also changed. He doesn't talk or smile much with others, but Mohan Kaka feels like he's still his little boy, whom he has treated like his own child since birth.
A few minutes later, a pean arrived with his tea and snacks. Mohan Kaka kept staring at the tray placed in front of him awkwardly. He didn't feel good to keep sitting in front of Arnav and eat for free in his office. He might treat Arnav as his beta, but the truth is Arnav is boss only. He doesn't look good for a servant to eat in their boss's office.
"Come in," Arnav ordered Khushi, who was knocking on the door while glancing at Mohan Kaka, who still didn't touch his food, "Kya hua? Why are you not eating? Don't tell me you want me to feed you now."
Khushi smiled a little, keeping some documents on Arnav's table, and she quickly turned to leave.
"Arey nahi nahi. I don't want to disturb you as you're working. I'll go and have this outside," Mohan said as he quickly stood up, taking the tray and walking out of his cabin before Arnav could stop him.
*****************************************
Mohan Kaka went to sit on one of the lounge chairs near Khushi's cabin set up. He smiled a little at her while placing the tray on his lap.
"Namaste," Khushi greeted him with a smile on her face as she walked to him and pulled a small centre table near his chair, "You can keep the tray here."
"Thank you, bitiya," Mohan Kaka smiled as he did as she instructed. Khushi walked back to sit on her chair to resume her work.
"What's your name, bitiya?" Mohan Kaka asked as he tried to remember her name. Anjali said her name the other day, but due to his age, he started to forget things quickly now.
"My name is Khushi," Khushi glanced at him as she smiled politely. She really wanted to continue this conversation with him, but she also knew she's being watched by her boss through the cctv cameras and if he caughts her chatting instead of working, he might really kick her out of the office now.
But Mohan Kaka seemed to be in the mood for a conversation as he introduced himself, "My name is Mohan. I work as a servant in Raizada Mansion. But Arnav beta ke liye.. I'm his Kaka. That's why he calls me Mohan Kaka."
Khushi nodded acknowledgingly. She won't lie. She was indeed surprised to know this side of Arnav. He didn't look like the person who would treat a servant of his house with this much respect. Maybe she was quick to judge him, he's seems like a person who hides more than what he shows to the world he is.
"Can I make a request to you?" Mohan Kaka asked.
Khushi nodded, "Ji Kaka."
"Dil laga kar kaam karna, theek hai? (Do it with all your heart, okay?). Always try to do your best and work with determination to achieve your goals and don't take your work for granted," Mohan Kaka said, and after seeing Khushi wondering why he suddenly said those words to her, he explained, "Arnav beta got to know that it was because of Anjali bitiya you got this job as his PA. He didn't like this at all, and he wanted to fire you from this job, but Anjali bitiya and I convinced him to keep you here. I specially requested him not to snatch this job away from you since I got to know from Anjali bitiya that you're going to get married soon. And he agreed. That's why I'm requesting you to work with your heart and not take this job for granted. Otherwise, I will feel bad for putting Arnav beta in this situation."
"Oh," Khushi was taken aback for a moment after knowing this. She took her time to compose herself and looked at Mohan Kaka with gratitude filled eyes, "Thank you so much, Kaka, for saving my job. And don't worry, now that I know this, I'll give my 101% to this job. I won't let you down, promise."
"Haan, work hard, but don't forget to look after your health too," he said concernedly, wondering if he scared the poor girl with his words.
Khushi blinked her eyes assuringly. "So that's how he knows I'm getting married soon, and you stupid, thought he's spying on him," Khushi thought, hitting her forehead as she shifted her attention back to her laptop while Mohan Kaka was having his tea and snacks.
"Arnav beta was praising you when I was in his cabin. He said that you complete all the tasks assigned to you," Mohan added to make Khushi feel better. He didn't want her to feel useless and let her know she only had this job secured by him. He just wanted to warn her to take her work seriously so Arnav wouldn't have a chance to complain or repent for keeping her as his PA.
Khushi faked a cough, widening her eyes, "Really?"
Mohan Kaka nodded, smiling, "Yes, really."
"Wow," her smile widened as she looked up at the ceiling, "Hey Devi Maiyya, did you hear it? ASR, aka Arnav Singh Raizada, praised me today. Aaj toh meri lottery lag gayi (I won a lottery today)."
Mohan Kaka giggled.
"Waise, aapko pata hai Kaka.. I don't know what to feel about your Arnav beta.. I mean, I really don't know.. sometimes I feel he's a good person, and other times I feel he's a pure evil soul, a rakshas. See, on the first day I met him, he threw hot coffee on my fiance's face.." Khushi stopped talking suddenly when she realised something as she stood up from her chair, horrified, "Hey DM.. I also spilt hot coffee on him. He must have been hurt."
Mohan Kaka also got up from chair worried too, "Arnav beta ko chot lagi hai?"
"Mohan Kaka, please wait here. I'll go and get an ointment for him," Khushi said and disappeared from there in seconds. She came back a few minutes later with antibiotic ointment for Arnav.
She wanted to give it to Mohan to hand it to Arnav, but then decided not to bother the old man and give it to him, herself. So she knocked on the door of his cabin and walked in after getting his permission.
Khushi gulped as she meekly extended her hand, holding the ointment to him, "Sir, aap ke liye (it's for you)."
Arnav looked up at her, confused, "Ab ye kya hai Miss Gupta? (Now what is this?)"
"Antibiotic ointment for burns.. voh, I hurt you.. you should apply it here," she pointed to her chest while gesturing him where he should apply the ointment.
"I don't need it. I'm not hurt," Arnav frowned a little, focusing back on his laptop screen.
"Kaise chot nahi lagi aap ko? It was a hot coffee that I spilt on you unintentionally," Khushi said guiltily.
"Guess what? I'm heat resistant!" he answered sarcastically.
Khushi sighed silently. She still kept the ointment on his table and left from there.
"I have countless wounds that a simple ointment will not be able to heal it, Miss Gupta," Arnav thought as he stared intently at the ointment she kept on his table after she left.
*****************************************
After their working hours ended, Aman took Khushi with him to an ice cream parlour, they choose to sit on a table set outside of the parlour, and Aman ordered her favourite strawberry ice cream and chocolate one for him.
"What happened?" he asked, watching her lost in her thoughts.
"I'm disappointed with myself," Khushi sighed sadly.
"Why? Does your boss scold you a lot?" Aman asked.
Khushi nodded her head vigorously, pouting sadly.
"It's just the third day, and this is your state. Imagine when things start getting tougher.. I already told you, Khushi.. ghar ke bahar jaana aur job karna, mardon ka kaam hota hai (it's a man's duty to step outside of the house and work).. you won't be able to bear the humiliation we go through every day in our jobs, girls are sensitive, and they feel like crying whenever they get little scolded by their bosses, while we men, we face this humiliation everyday and next day we forget about it like it never happened," Aman said.
Khushi glared at him, irritated, "What rubbish you're saying, Aman.. are you even hearing yourself? Did you even count the number of women working in AR that you're talking to as if only men work there? And women are not cry-babies, we're strong enough to face the corporate world like men, okay?
He held her hand resting on the table, "Accha, sorry, sorry. I didn't mean to say this. It's just that when I see you upset like this, I also feel angry and helpless that I'm unable to give you the life you deserve. I feel bad to hear my fiancee is getting humiliated and scolded by that Papa ka Rakshas!"
"Don't call him Papa ka Rakshas," Khushi frowned, "And it's not his fault. Yes, he scolds me because I keep making mistakes after mistakes in my work. And this is why I'm disappointed with myself. Because I'm not good enough. I feel like I'm failing to fit myself in this corporate world. I'm struggling to behave formally with my boss. I just ended up speaking with him like I speak at home sometimes. And this is why he scolds me, too. After knowing how Anjali and Mohan Kaka convinced him not to fire me from this job. I'm feeling even more guilty as if I'm in a place of someone who rightfully deserved this job, someone more talented and competent than me."
"It's okay, jaan. You will learn with time," Aman said with a soft tone, raising his hand to cup her cheeks, "Cheer up.. finish your ice cream.. it'll melt."
Khushi nodded, "I need to be more focused and control my mouth onwards."
"Do you know today-," Khushi was about to share with Aman about Arnav's father cheating on his mother, but then she kept quiet. She felt it was better not to share this with Aman as knowing how much Aman hates him, he might use this information to mock Arnav again in front of everyone in office like he did the first time.
"Haan?" Aman looked at her questioningly, wondering why she stopped talking suddenly.
"Voh, today I unintentionally spilt coffee on him," Khushi quickly covered up.
"Oh, that's my girl. You got revenge on him for what he did to me," Aman grinned, pulling her cheeks.
Khushi shook her head vigorously, "Maine aisa kuch nahi kiya Aman (I didn't do anything like that). It was unintentional, and you know, despite being in pain, he didn't hissed for once. Instead, he helped me when I was stumbled on my heels."
Aman rolled his eyes, "Big deal."
"Yes, it's a big deal, Aman. Not only this, you know his servant came to give him clean clothes after this incident, and you won't believe he treated his servant as if he is family to him. I was pleasantly surprised by his behaviour with Mohan Kaka," Khushi continued singing praises to Arnav much to Aman's dislike.
He made an annoyed look, "Accha, can we just stop talking about your boss on our date?"
Khushi raised her brows at him with a teasing smile, "Are you jealous?"
"Of course I'm. My girl has another's man name on her mouth when she's with me," he narrowed his eyes at her.
"Don't exaggerate ahn. You make things sound so dirty. I was just sharing something with you," Khushi frowned annoyed with him, she shifted her attention to her ice cream ignoring him.
"Won't you let me taste your ice cream?" he asked teasingly to change her mood.
"Nahi," Khushi glared at him before licking her ice cream.
Few minutes later, Khushi remembered she didn't even thank Anjali for saving her job. She instantly took her phone from her bag and called Anjali. Anjali didn't attend her phone calls, still she insisted few more times and that's when finally Anjali picked up the call.
When she greeted Anjali, she realized something was wrong, she could hear Anjali sobbing silently. She asked what happened and Anjali started narrating everything that happened between her and Arnav, how Arnav asked her to choose between maintaining their friendship or save Khushi's job.
Khushi was shocked to hear all of this. The phone was on loudspeaker, so Aman heard their conversation too. He looked at Khushi with a sarcastic look that says 'See you were praising him a lot!"
Khushi ignored him, as after she recovered from the shock, she instantly shifted her attention to a crying Anjali, "Di meri baat suno (Di listen to me).. we won't break our friendship even if this means me having to resign that job.. I really don't care okay.. I won't cut off ties with you no matter what.. and you don't need to sacrifice our friendship to help me.. you should have told me this earlier.. I would never allow you to choose my job over our friendship.. it's okay.. I will search for another job.. this is not the only job left in this world for me.. I'll find another better one.. waise bhi, I wasn't really happy working for that Rakshas either.. so I'll quit.. but never break our friendship."
Aman was finally relieved to hear she would quit this job.
Khushi hang up the phone after talking with Anjali.
"I told you he's a Papa ka Rakshas only. He treats his servant like family, but his own sister like she's his servant," Aman said with 'See-I'm-always-right' expression on his face.
Khushi lowered her head, her mood was off, "You were right. I'm the one who was trying to see a positive side of a Rakshas. I forgot there's no light to an evil soul."
