On a Day Like Today - Cyan x Kinn
Just something special I decided to write ;)
Inspired by this song by Keane
Kinn brushed and tidied her cropped, periwinkle blue hair, a gleeful smile on her face. It was her turn to ask Cyan to go for another date and she was ecstatic as usual.
Red tinted her soft, perfect light blue face as she thought of him. The happy moments they've shared, their lovely conversations, all that was making her smile. Last week Cyan had asked her out on a nice dinner together. This time Kinn wanted to bring him to a beautiful garden waterfall nearby Paradise's tallest mountain and take a walk there.
Once her hair and clothes were tidied up, she picked up her bag, which was sitting on her bed, and walked outside the house. She checked her phone as she walked, and was slightly surprised to see that Cyan hadn't answered any of her texts. Maybe he just wanted to surprise me like two weeks ago, she thought cheerfully and optimistically. If he was, then she's ready this time.
Whenever the two wanted to go somewhere, they would always meet up at a small bus stop not too far away from both of their homes, right in the middle. So Kinn walked over to the bus stop, sat down, and waited patiently. As five minutes passed, she got bored and pulled out her phone again to text Cyan.
Kinn: I'm at the stop. Hurry up, would ya?
Another five minutes. Ten minutes. Fifteen minutes. Thirty minutes.
No answer. Kinn was beginning to feel a bit anxious. Cyan was never late.
Where was he?
Worry welled up in her gut. She immediately went to her friends' group chat and tried to ask them.
Kinn: Guys, have you seen Cyan?
Verdan: No, I thought he was going out with you? :)
Lili: ^
Blixer: Eyy you guys datin again?
Kinn: I'm serious, he's not answering any of my texts. Nor any of my calls from this morning
Ferris: He was online in a couple of games very early this morning but I haven't seen him today, soz
Ferris: He's probably tryna surprise ya gurl
Kinn: He's never late
Ferris: True
Blixer: I'm not at home, had to go and get my fixed guitar back from the store and the shopkeeper's an asshole so I haven't seen that midget since this morning, so not even I know where Cyan is, sorry Kinn
Kinn sighed and slipped her phone back into her pocket. It was worth a try. Guess she'll have to visit his apartment.
If this was a prank she would kill the guy.
It was eleven now thanks to this problem. She was planning to go at half past ten to take a walk around the gardens surrounding the waterfall and go out just in time for lunch, but now it seems like Cyan was ruining her plan. They'd be late and Kinn had work to do after lunch. Just great.
She speed-walked her way through the apartment Cyan lived in. She took the elevator and climbed up to the seventh floor, reached Cyan's apartment door and knocked, politely at first. When she didn't get an answer for ten seconds, she tried again, harder this time. No response. Frustrated, she rapped her cold knuckles on the polished wood much harder. "Cyan!" she half-yelled, trying not to disturb Cyan's neighbours with her loud voice. "Come on, you're late!" She placed her hand on the knob and pushed it, not expecting anything to happen.
But to her surprise the door wasn't locked and the door swung open, revealing a small apartment room which she had gotten familiar with. The main area had a couch with a grass green rug underneath it and a small TV opposite it hung on the wall. Next to the couch was a bookshelf aligned with it. Behind all that was a tiny kitchen with a smallish dining table fit for at least four people, and two doorways leading to Blixer and Cyan's rooms.
And sprawled on the rugged floor in front of the couch was a tiny, cyan-haired figure, lifting his head up to look at Kinn, an unreadable expression on his face.
"Cyan?" Kinn exclaimed in shock, terrified that something might've happened to the teenage Guardian. The guy was a mess. His usually soft, tidy hair cropped in segments was tangled and messy, completely covering his right eye. Kinn was wearing a neat pastel blue blouse and a skirt that matched her periwinkle blue hair, meanwhile Cyan was wearing a dirty white T-shirt and black shorts and his Square pendant was nowhere to be seen. He looked as if he had been drinking, but Cyan never drinks, not even when he was stressed, and not a single bottle of alcohol was in sight.
So what had happened?
Surprising her further, Cyan suddenly sprang to his feet, took a step back and spoke, in a seemingly emotionless voice. "What're you doing here?"
Kinn looked at him confused. What is wrong with the guy?
"Cyan, have you forgotten? We have a date today—"
"I can't right now," Cyan cut off. His expression was extremely hard to read. "I just... can't. Please leave me alone." Kinn waited for him to continue, but he didn't say anything. He looked away. Her heart throbbed. It actually hurt.
"Well," Kinn said, trying to keep her voice from sounding hurt, "you could've at least said something about it than downright ignoring all my calls and texts."
She couldn't keep the fury from her tone when she said it, and without waiting for a response from the cyan-haired teen, she stormed out of the room and slammed the door shut, wiping away a tear that threatened to roll down her cheek as she did.
Cyan wished that he could explain to her why he rejected their fourth date. It was all too much. He wanted to tell her just how much he loved her. They confessed about liking each other not too long ago, but loving? He wanted to tell her. But he couldn't. And he was terrified that he would act awkward and embarrassing but does not result in a confession, just like last week.
He was scared to disappoint her.
Or who knows? She might not return the same feelings back.
It was a silly thought, especially since they've known each other for a while now, but it could happen.
And as much as he would hate to admit it, it scares him.
So his whole morning was spent on playing a couple of online games, a quick, half-hearted breakfast, and sulking about on the couch until he fell over and refusing to get up, not knowing what to feel and not knowing how to respond to any of his calls or texts.
He knew Kinn wouldn't understand.
He was terrible at love.
For the following week Kinn had been avoiding him. Cyan had finally gone back online and chatting in the group chat his friends owned right after the day he canceled their date, and whenever he started talking while Kinn was online and chatting, she would immediately fall silent and go offline. Cyan couldn't blame her. He acted like an asshole. He just wished he could explain.
But everytime he would try to, he would lose the words. And he didn't know why.
The others seemed to know what was going on between the two. Blixer asked why Cyan didn't go out with Kinn that day, and Cyan, feeling the need to vent, let out everything bottled up within him.
"...and that's just it," he finished. "I love her but I can't find the words. And all this is making her sick. Sick and tired of me. I'm a failure." He moaned and covered his face with his hands, finally able to let the salty nectar pour out his eyes in a constant waterfall as he sobbed. He couldn't believe he was showing weakness to the man whom he had defeated and Purified, but he couldn't have cared less at the moment.
"H-hey, it's alright," Blixer tried to comfort him. "You're not a failure. Love is a tricky business, I have to say." He shook his head and patted Cyan's back gently. "It's not your fault."
"But it is!" Cyan exclaimed, his wet, tear-covered face still buried in his palms. "It's my fault she's feeling so miserable. If I hadn't been so selfish about my own fucking feelings and cared about her more, she wouldn't have avoided me like this. Now she hates me." He continued to sob loudly, letting the depressing thoughts squeeze at his heart.
Blixer simply wrapped his left hand around Cyan's back and clutched the teen's shoulder as he held him close. He racked his brain, trying to think of something to say. God, he sucked at comforting. "Alright Cyan," he sighed. "Listen up. Nobody thinks it's your fault. I don't. Lili, Verdan, and Ferris doesn't. Luna doesn't. And I bet everything in the world that Kinn still loves you and even though she's avoiding you right now, she can't avoid you forever. If you would be a gentleman and ask her out for a date and apologize, I know she'd forgive you."
"She wouldn't understand," Cyan sniffed.
"Just try," Blixer smiled. "Come on. You know Kinn better than I do. You would know what to do, right?"
Cyan sighed. "If I did I wouldn't have hurt her feelings."
"Kid, why can't you get it through that head of yours that you're capable of this?" Blixer shook his head. And then suddenly his one eye opened wide. It twinkled as a wide smile spread across his face. "What is it?" asked Cyan when he noticed Blixer's expression.
The once-Corrupted man grinned at the young Guardian of Paradise. "I have an idea."
"Another date, huh?" Kinn grumbled to herself as she stalked around her room, getting ready for this new date Cyan had arranged for them. "He'd better come up with an apology, and it better be a good one."
It has been exactly a week since Cyan had vented to Blixer, but Kinn didn't know that. Yesterday Kinn was surprised to see Cyan had the guts to text her and ask her out for another date the next day. Despite feeling a bit reluctant about this one, Kinn still managed to look stunning. She was wearing the same blouse and skirt as last week, and her long hair, which was cropped into segments similar to Cyan's, was neatly done. She may be slightly, slightly thrilled that Cyan had asked her out unexpectedly, but she still kept an annoyed expression on her face.
A little intimidation is always needed.
The boys shouldn't get the easy way now, should they?
Once again, she stepped outside her house with little expectations on what Cyan had planned for them today. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary, apart from the fact that their group chat being quieter than usual. Ferris and Luna hinted something about bringing a guitar somewhere, but Kinn couldn't really care.
Kinn was simply told to wait at the stop as usual. Neither of them ever mentions about where they're heading before their dates, but this time Kinn was curious. She had a feeling the guy's planning something, and she was itching to find out. Maybe an apology of some sort, she thought. It really better be.
And she was surprised to see a familiar, tall pink-and-gold haired man wearing a familiar leather jacket sitting on the bench of the bus stop.
"Blixer?" She gave the tall man a confused look. "What are you doing here?"
Blixer smiled. "Just here to escort ya," he winked, standing up.
Kinn looked around. "Where's Cyan?"
"Ah," Blixer nervously rubbed the back of his neck, "I'm worried if you two met up here you'd punch the kid. Or at least give him your signature cold glare."
Kinn raised an eyebrow. "He deserves it."
"I know—I-I mean, no, but, look. Don't you think you should forgive him? He's been pretty miserable the whole week."
"And you think I'm not?" Kinn crossed her arms. "I'm not forgiving him until after he apologizes. Thanks to that..." she restrained herself from swearing, "...muttonhead, I can't help but feel like I'm the one to blame for all this, even though it's all him. Please, just keep your nose out of our business, Blixer."
Blixer felt a pang of sadness in his heart. "Don't take this the wrong way, Kinn. Cyan didn't ask me to escort you. But he's got something to tell you and he couldn't do this on his own. I'm helping both of you out—"
"Wait," Kinn interrupted. "Cyan's got something to tell me?"
Blixer sighed. "Yes. Now will you please stop complaining and just come with me to where Cyan's taking you?"
Reluctantly, Kinn nodded and followed Blixer. Coward, she spat in her mind. Can't even show his face in front of his partner like this. But she also felt a little bit of pity towards the cyan-haired teen. Perhaps Blixer was right, she should probably stop being so angry. But it didn't wipe off the annoyed look on her face. Plus, she wouldn't forgive him until after he apologizes.
Not long after, Kinn started to realize where Cyan wanted them to meet up. A towering, blinding white tree shaped like three triangles pointing upwards loomed in the distance. Cyan wanted to meet her under the legendary Tree. She smiled mentally. How romantic.
And then they could see a cyan figure pacing back and forth, looking at the ground nervously. The colour slightly drained from his face when he noticed Blixer coming back with his partner.
"Right, deep breaths, deep breaths," Cyan repeated to himself over and over. He was so nervous he felt like throwing up. What Blixer had suggested was an absolutely clever plan but also would be absolutely embarrassing if he messes this up. But he was ready to say it. And in a very special way.
Kinn approached Cyan with her hands on her hips. Well shit, she still looks angry. He swallowed as his face flushed a bright red—this won't be easy.
"I'll leave you two here," Blixer said and, unbeknownst to Kinn, winked at Cyan with a look that says, for now. Cyan nodded stiffly at him and watched him go. He took a deep breath, and his stomach turned to ice when he looked into Kinn's beautiful pearl black eyes.
Standing next to him was a small picnic table with some food neatly arranged and a couple of stools. The two sat down, and Cyan could barely meet Kinn's unusually intense gaze.
"So..."
Kinn raised an eyebrow. "So."
"U-uh, Kinn," he stammered. He cleared his throat, very much aware that his face was as red as a tomato, which seems to amuse Kinn slightly. "I-I-I want to... apologize for my-my behaviour last week..."
"Uh-huh." She wasn't satisfied yet.
He tried to control his breathing. "You see... I-I didn't do that for no reason, I w-was just--" He couldn't finish his own sentence as he buried his extremely red face in his palms again and sucked in a breath. He bit his lip to stop himself from crying and showing even more weakness.
He was a goddamn failure. He couldn't even apologize to his own partner.
Kinn could barely feel any more anger towards the young man as her motherly instincts came kicking back. She suddenly remembered that Cyan was never a social person anymore ever since he moved into Paradise. She remembered how he had said that these sudden fluffy feelings were new to him and he could barely understand how to react to certain gestures.
It wasn't her fault. But it wasn't his either.
She cursed at herself mentally for acting so childish. Why couldn't she just get over it? It would've been so simple to just forgive him, listen to his explanation, and make sure he wouldn't do that again in the future. Especially when she knew that Cyan didn't do it intentionally.
As Cyan bit his lip so hard he thought it was going to bleed in order to stop his eyes from leaking out tears, his heart skipped a beat when he felt warm hands wrapping around him in a comforting manner. Kinn had approached him and hugged him tightly, and Cyan hugged her back. Oh, how he missed that warm, comforting, motherly embrace.
"Kinn..." he whispered, unable to stop a few of his tears from leaking out, "I was an idiot. I'm sorry. I should've been able to explain."
"It's okay," she whispered back, caressing Cyan's soft, brilliant hair, "I was the one who was acting childish. I guess I was just heartbroken because I was expecting too much. It was wrong of me to act like you don't even exist afterwards."
The two released each other and looked into each other's eyes. Pearl black to ocean blue.
Kinn couldn't stop herself from asking. "But why did you reject my date offer last week?"
Cyan stiffened but took a deep breath. This was it.
Suddenly Blixer came out of nowhere, carrying his favorite pink electric guitar, striding purposefully towards the scene. He handed Cyan the guitar, ruffled his hair (earning himself a friendly punch on the arm by the cyan Square), and walked away, disappearing as quickly as he came. Kinn only stared with an awed expression.
"Has he been listening to us the entire time?" she demanded him. Cyan just laughed and gestured her to sit down, which she did.
"Don't mind him," he smiled. He hovered his hands above the strings, remembering the chords of the song he was going to play. "Kinn, I made this song just for you. I'm not gonna lie, I couldn't have done it without the help of Blix and the others... but the lyrics? I wrote them myself. For you."
Kinn's eyes welled up with happy tears as she could barely hide her excitement. A song? Just for her?
The cyan-haired Guardian inhaled deeply. And started strumming.
The first few chords were already a beautiful melody in itself. Kinn didn't know Cyan was good at the guitar. And then she didn't expect such an angelic voice coming out of Cyan's mouth as he started singing.
On a day like today
I looked at you and I
Saw something in the way
You stared into the sky
I saw you
Were sick and tired of my wrong turns
If you only knew
The way I feel, I'd really love to tell you
But I...
The song sent Kinn into a trance. His voice was pure and it sounded like heaven as it combined with the guitar. She could even imagine background music playing. It painted such a beautiful picture in her mind and the melancholy in his voice wrenched at her heart. Pink and blue flower petals that seemingly came out of nowhere fluttered around them, adding to the beauty of the scene.
...could never seem to say
The things I needed to
On a day like today
No other words would do
I saw you
Were sick and tired of my wrong turns
If you only knew
The way I feel, I'd really love to tell you
But I
Could never find the words to say
And I don't know why
I can't find the words to say
And I don't know why
I can't find the words to say
And I don't know why
I can't find the words to say
And I don't know why...
She didn't realize the song had ended when it did. And she didn't realize that her eyes were leaking tears of joy as she stared at Cyan, speechless. Cyan smiled wider when he saw her expression.
He placed Blixer's guitar on his stool. He approached Kinn and held her soft hands as she stood up. Kinn's eyes were wide with happiness and anticipation.
"What I'm trying to say is, Kinn," Cyan said, exhaling, "I love you."
Kinn bit her lip to stop herself from crying even further. "I love you too."
The weight that had been pressuring in Cyan's chest was lifted as their lips pressed against each other. He did it! He confessed! And best of all...
She accepted.
And they shared their unforgettable first kiss beneath the dazzling glow of the Tree of Life.
...
Eyyy I did it I actually made a good fluff
Of course I couldn't really keep the feels away, I'm Ashley. I don't do plain fluff. :)
Soon I'm gonna write something with a slightly/lot darker theme, after I finish one request. So why not try to give me some suggestions for it?
Thanks for reading!
