Chapter Twenty-One
He woke up suddenly as he heard a whimper of pain.
Looking up, Diverion turned to see the freckled alchemist who's face was tight and pale as he tossed and turned on the couch. His mouth opened a few times, soundless words forming as sweat ran down his face.
Staring at him for a moment, he quickly looked for some way to help him.
Varian seemed to be coming out of his who knew how long coma... but it didn't look like he was coming out of it easily.
Diverion pushed himself to his feet from the floor and grabbed a cloth, running to the kitchen. He then quickly wet it with cold water, before coming back over and laying it across the teen's burning forehead.
Not knowing what else to do, he pulled off the mess of blankets which Fenra most likely discarded on him, and pressed the cool cloth to his head as Varian's head turned restlessly.
He watched him anxiously as Varian let out a small cry, his whole face now flushed with heat.
"Oh no... don't get sick on me here...", he muttered feeling a bit helpless.
He looked at the bedroom where Fenra had went to last night, not wanting to wake her up but also hoping she'd have something of use.
Truth was she was terrifying to wake up and was scary when she wasn't ready to be up.... also she wasn't really helpful when it came to treating people. She enjoyed burning them too much-
Diverion looked back at Varian and decided to just figure it out himself, he doubted Fenra would help him even if she had anything to help.
He grabbed his head gently, pushing a blanket underneath it for support as he fixed the wet cloth.
"It'll be okay.", he said, making sure he didn't fall off the old piece of furniture, "You'll be better soon and once you are Miss Cassandra will come find you."
Varian's brow furrowed as he groaned, his eyes opening slowly at his words.
Diverion almost felt his heart stop as his eyes opened, shocked about not only him waking up but the way his eyes looked. He withdrew his hand to his chest, wanting to back away in fear as the other male's eyes met his own.
"Y-You.. know C-Cass?", Varian whispered out, his face still hot.
He stared. What should he do? Say?!
He then backed up as the alchemist sat up suddenly, holding his head and the couch for support. "How do.. do y-you know Cassandra?", he asked weakly.
Diverion felt terrified for reasons he wished weren't true. Maybe he was wrong.. BY GOD he hoped he was wrong.
That was the last thing he needed. That the world needed, and especially not this poor teenager by the name of Varian.
"You should rest...", he finally managed to say, his voice trembling, "You really shouldn't be up yet."
The freckled male looked up at him, "Answer me.", he said his eyes practically throwing sparks.
No. They DID throw sparks. Bright blue ones as his teal hair-stripe glowed.
"Yes, I know a woman named Cassandra.", he answered hoping he'd calm down, "I came across her because she mistook me for you, she wanted to know where you were! She's been looking for you. That's how I know who you are too."
"Who am I Then?", he challenged.
Diverion felt his gut churn, "You're Varian."
He watched as the teen leaned towards him, no longer holding his head in pain, "Do you know what else I am?"
He backed away from Varian slowly, the feeling of dread growing stronger, "You obviously are the moondrop or something..."
Why was he answering him still? Maybe he should stop... these questions felt like trick more then anything.
"Why do you say that?", Varian asked, his eyes gleaming. He narrowed his eyes slightly as Diverion stayed quiet, "I said, WHY DO YOU SAY THAT?"
Diverion didn't know what to do as he felt power radiate off him. He stared at him uneasily, "Past true holders of the moondrop have looked similarly as you do... the hair and eyes are always the same. Are you saying you're not?"
"I am. And do you know why I went missing?", he asked.
"You were fighting... Zhan Tiri.", he said trying to keep his voice steady as he stood at the opposite end of the couch, "Cassandra said you sacrificed yourself for the kingdom and then disappeared."
"I did disappear. Got flung into the Dark Veil...", Varian said quietly standing up, his body way too steady for someone who was in a coma and suffered a fever rush, "right after I did the Ultimate Incantation, I was ripped away from this world along with every bit of magic, black or natural. It was painful, but I was ready to die. Ready to give up everything to protect and make up for my mistakes."
The room was deathly quiet as he paused, staring down Diverion who was secretely reaching for his dagger.
"But no. I ended up here, trapped in this cursed forest and all my efforts wasted because you had to screw them up.", he laughed bitterly.
"What are you talking about?!", he asked, his hand shaking as he took another step back, "How did I mess up everything?!"
Varian stared him down, "Your damned blood."
"There's nothing wrong with my blood!!", he yelled at him, angry and now afraid, every part of him knowing there was something terribly off about the person in front of him. "What are you even getting at?! I have nothing to do with Zhan Tiri!!"
He laughed again, "Nothing?! Really...", he went towards him, "You're a damned demon."
"No. No I'm not.", he retorted, "I'm nothing like those demons.", he said his hand wrapping around the blade as he felt his back go against the dirty and moldy wall, "Don't judge me with something that I never had a say in."
Diverion stared down Varian as he stood a couple feet away, not wanting to hurt the alchemist.
"You need to go back to that couch and rest. Now.", he ordered him, "You've been through a lot."
Varian crossed his arms, "I don't think so. I'm not done talking with you yet Diverion and you know it."
Diverion felt himself sweat as he said his name, he never told Varian his name.., "Who ARE YOU?!", he shouted.
"You already know. I'm Varian.", he said simply looking bored, "So stop wasting your time asking pointless questions."
"Get out of him. Get out of him right now.", he said glaring at the person in front of him.
He felt his stomach sink as Varian tilted his head, a sick smile that didn't belong upon his face, "Oh no, I'm quite afraid I can't do that. I like it in here, being the moondrop and all. The best part is it's a collaboration Diverion, both of us can give each other what the other wants."
Diverion's hand clenched the blade that was still concealed behind his leg, his whole face pale as he tried to decide what to do.
If Varian really had willingly let him in... could he make himself kill him?!
"Get the HELL OUT OF HIM!!", he screamed drawing his dagger and pinning Varian to the wall roughly, "Or I swear I'll rip this through his throat! And what good would that do you? None! So GET OUT!!"
Varian only laughed, "Your threats are empty, you can't kill anybody Diverion. And I already told you, I agreed to this. He's not leaving."
His hand shook as he pressed the blade to his throat, "WHY- why would you ever..."
"Want to know why magic survives? Why you wasted my efforts? Why it's all your fault?!", the freckled teen threw, "Because of your existence.", he spat, "You being so weak and denying who you are, being an ungrateful coward. If you'd just accepted who are maybe I wouldn't have had something to hold onto, but I do. You're a warlock Diverion!! And you've wasted it all by being a stubborn, weak disappointment. You holding back though has given me the chance to survive with him because of my blood within you. And when demons got sent back to the Dark Veil, since you denied your powers the incantation's affects didn't bother you; therefore giving me a way to hold on."
Diverion felt himself fall into despair at their words as he held down the male under him, seeing the demonic warlock through Varian's eyes clearly. Two people were talking... and he was afraid that Varian truly had let him in.
He tried to keep himself from shaking in fear, "Fight back, Varian! And you aren't Varian so GET LOST!!", he dug the blade further in, "AND SHUT UP!"
"Should've thought of that before you ruined everything Diverion.", the possessed Varian laughed unbothered by the metal, "When Zhan Tiri clung onto me as we both got ripped apart into the Dark Veil, there was not much I could do. I saw magic still thrived and it's coming back, leaking through the doors I had tried to lock. I didn't want to accept your father at first, I fought back as I lay in a coma as that stupid girl found me. But then I realized, I couldn't come back without help and my efforts were for nothing anyway, so why not? Why not let him through so I could live my life, the one I had almost lost for no reason.", he said.
"You didn't sacrifice yourself needlessly, you defeated Zhan Tiri Varian!! Isn't that worth something?! Why would you ever accept him into yourself if you were trying so hard to stop him!!"
"Because it was pointless and I lost too much of my soul in the Dark Veil. He melded into what I had left and we're going to work together from now on. I've accepted it.", he said coldly, "He'll get his damned moondrop power and I'll make sure I can control his demons once magic fully returns. We'll then deal with the magic issue properly and make sure it's only used in the right hands once we find the stupid old geezer."
"My father doesn't work that way Varian!! He'll take over everything, it's what he does; he'll promise you power, life, even peace but he'll only stab you in the back and take everything you own.", he felt tears pushing into his eyes, "WHY THE HELL DO YOU THINK I WAS EVEN BORN?! He lied and used my MOTHER!!"
Diverion found himself against the wall now as Varian turned on him, his grip deceptively strong for someone so small.
"I loved her Diverion. I did.", Zhan Tiri spoke through Varian, glaring at him, "And I loved you too... you're the one that rejected me. Rejected my magic and everything I worked for."
"Because you're a bloody monster!!!", he screamed, "Just look at yourself!! You really think you're the good guy here!!? That Demanitus was just making it all up? Is that what you think?! I never wanted to be a part of that, part of the hurting, the killing!! I'm sick of it!"
"You disappoint me Diverion. You have so much potential and you're wasting all of it."
"AND I DON'T WANT IT!! And I don't FUCKING CARE what you think!", he shouted, "You might be my father but you'll never be my dad!!"
Varian's, as Zhan Tiri, eyes widened before Diverion watched the small change in his eyes, Varian taking over again, "This is very touching and all but here's the jist. You're the fucking reason everything I did was for nothing, so you're going to go back where you belong."
Diverion struggled more against him, "No! You can't do that! You can't!!"
"Oh I can, I've got the power and means to do it. And it's easy when you got the king of demons on your side. He won't let me kill you unfortunately, but maybe he'll change his mind after we get what we want with the magic crap. Then he'll see he won't need you alive once he takes your supposed talent.", he grinned, a hand gripping his throat, "Thanks for existing and giving me this hellish life Diverion, now let me return the favor."
Diverion gasped for breath as he tried to fight back, terror and hopelessness seizing his heart. He felt the dagger being ripped away from him, as he was then stabbed in the hand with it, his hand pinned to the wall as he screamed in agony.
Varian snapped his free hand, making the rocks twist into a wide circle around Diverion's feet.
"And that bit with your father backstabbing me? He's under my rules, my body. I'm smarter then him.", his eyes glowed with disgusting pride, "There's enough of me to keep him in line."
"He's making you cruel.", he choked out, his vision blurring, "I know for a f-fact, Miss Cassandra was not looking for a Varian like this."
Varian laughed, "Maybe not, but the thing I'm still the same. I just hate you Diverion, and my own father for that matter, but that's not important because it's you who's going to suffer first. I hate this just as much as you, but I'm using it to my advantage. And one of those advantages is taking revenge on you.", he seethed.
He then ripped the dagger out of the wall and released his neck, making him fall to the ground gasping and coughing.
Blood poured out of his hand as he caught sight of the circle around him, realizing what it was and making a move too late.
"Until later, Diverion. Goodbye.", Varian said to him. Diverion then slipped through the floor like water, the portal throwing him into darkness.
