Chapter one
AMELIA!" her adopted mother screamed, "Get up you are going to be late for school AGAIN!" Amelia slowly sat up in bed running her fingers through her long dark hair. As she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes she realized her mom was right! She only had twenty minutes until she had to leave for school. She rolled out of bed to get ready for the long day she had ahead of her. "Alright... I'm up," she reluctantly yelled back, "Thanks for the wake-up call." She hurried to run a brush through her hair and put on a bit of makeup so she didn't look as tired as she felt. "Alright Mom I'm gone," she yelled out to her mother while stuffing a piece of toast on her mouth. "Be careful walking to school today. After last night's big football win everyone seems to be focused on who all is going to the playoffs rather than looking where they're going," her mom told her lovingly. "Alright I'll be extra careful when doing something so dangerous as crossing the street," Amelia said while chuckling softly. Her mom looked disgruntled and practically shoved her out the door before she could say anything else. After taking a quick glance at her phone she panicked and started to sprint to the highschool. "No no no no no no!! I can't be late to first period again... Mr. Chicago is gonna kill me!" she mentally screamed at herself. Mr Chicago was her no nonsense english teacher. He seemed to have a special brand of his glares and sarcastic (demeaning) just for her. She sprinted through the front door of Burnham High and headed straight to her english class. She slid through the door just as the late bell started to ring. "Yes! Right on time," she quietly cheered to herself, " Maybe Mr. Chicago won't notice that I was almost late.... Yeah that's not gonna happen, but hopefully he won't say anything." She tried to sneak over to her seat in the very back corner without catching a certain teacher's attention, but alas luck did not seem to be on her side today. Just as she was about to sit down a nasally voice came from the front of the class. "Ah Ms. Roberts, aren't we all so lucky to have you grace us with your presence on this already horrible day," Mr. Chicago said with that horrible sneer on his face. She sighed disheartened with her seemingly never ending bad luck. She managed to make it on time just like he asked her to do and he still hated her. At this point she was done with trying to please him whether it was through her work in class or just being an obedient student. She was honestly done with trying to impress him, so she just did the bare minimum of what she asked him. So instead of being angry or talking back she just nodded her head and sat down silently. As the final bell to start the day rang she opened her notebook that she had designated for this class. That being said, nothing in that notebook was about what Mr. Chicago was teaching. She was a mediocre student who paid attention just enough to have a B average in his class. She just doodled and daydreamed about what was recent in her life, whether it was ideas for what she should paint next to messaging her friend who lives across the country. In Burnham high she wasn't hated, but she was not popular by any means. She only had a few friends, and they all had their own social groups who did not welcome Amelia by any means. She knew that they all spread rumors about her behind her back. Like she did drugs, or that she was an illegal immigrant from somewhere in Europe. They were so random and outlandish that no one really believes them, but they avoided her anyways. "Pssst," a sudden whisper came from beside her, "Hey Ames are you going to the football game after school?" Amelia snapped out of her daydreaming to find out who was whispering to her. It was her best friend Gina. She was one of the schools cheerleaders, she was one of the nicest people in the entire school. She always told everyone that it was her mission to destroy the stereotype that all cheerleaders are mean people. She was beautiful on the inside and on the outside. She had long red hair that always looked perfect, rain or shine. Her skin was incredibly pale because her mom was from Ireland. Gina's mom decided to move to the states after meeting her dad who was on vacation there. Amelia always loved to learn about history. She always told people that she loved history because she just thought it was interesting, which for the most part was true but deep down she knew that she liked learning about everyone's history because she knew nothing about her own. She was abandoned by her mom when she was six months old. Her adopted mother always told her that her mom really did love her, but she was in trouble with some bad people and had to leave Amelia behind for her own safety. Amelia's adopted mother never gave her any details other than that. No matter how much Amelia searched, and questioned she could never find out any details, like what kind of trouble her mom was in, who her dad was, even what her mom looked like. After she disappeared it seemed that there was no trace of her left on this earth. If Amelia was being really honest with herself her real mom was what she was daydreaming about more than anything. What life would have been like if her mom had never given her up. Would it have been the perfect life with the perfect mom who was sweet but stern, or would life have been incredibly difficult considering she had no clue what kind of trouble her mom was in. Was she involved in drugs, crime, or something even worse... Amelia shook her head to push these spiraling thoughts out of her mind. She was being incredibly rude to Gina who was looking at her expectantly. "Shoot," Amelia thought "She definitely asked me a question while I was off in la la land. Should I try and guess what she said, or just come straight out and tell her I was not paying attention." Amelia made up her mind and opened her mouth to reply when she heard someone behind her clear their throat. Thinking it was a student she turned around to ask the rude student if they would mind their own business when she was met with the menacing glare of Mr. Chicago. "Unless this conversation is going to change the world I suggest that you stop disrupting everyone else. Now that would be a shock... getting Ms. Roberts to close her mouth for more than five minutes," he said with his trademark sneer. Gina was horrified and quickly turned to face the front of the room. She was the type of person who never got in trouble, and she felt responsible for Amelia getting scolded, but she did not want to get in trouble as well. Her face quickly turned as red as her hair and she started to stutter out different apologies to Mr. Chicago. Amelia on the other hand was used to being scolded by him, so she just gave him a look that just screamed "This is the ten thousandth time I have gone through this. It's getting pretty boring." Amelia just turned back to her notebook and waited for Mr. Chicago to walk away so she could continue her doodle. Although her friends constantly praised her art work, Amelia really didn't think that she was very talented. She could not draw people to save her life, but she could draw the most stunning landscapes ever. It almost looked as though it was a photograph taken by a professional photographer. That was her friends opinion anyway. She continued to sketch what was turning out to be a vast forest. She quickly got caught up in her work as she put more detail into it. She could feel the breeze that was softly blowing through the enormous trees, smell the fresh dew on the short but thick grass, and she could hear the gentle sound of running water from the small creek that looked as though it came right out of an enchanted forest. The water was so clear that she could see the tiny fish that swam through. Amelia had never been anywhere like this in her life but she could have sworn that while drawing this, an odd sense of deja vu hit her. She pushed away the feeling and continued to draw the world fading away around her... She was startled out of her fantasy world as the bell screamed signaling the end of class. She quickly gathered her stuff and headed to continue her already monotonous day. Not knowing that when she returned home her life would change forever.
