Day 32:
My friend and I are making a huge list of things we want to do together this summer. Go to the beach, visit the city, movie nights, sleepovers, pool days and just generally relishing each other's company.
What was underlying the whole conversation was the unspoken possibility that we might not be able to do any of those things. We might not be able to see each other for another two months. Both of our June birthdays may pass in quarantine. The beaches and water parks may remain closed for the remainder of the summer. We might have to deal with spotty internet connection and pixilated screens in lieu of hugs and laughter until next school year.
When my friend and I FaceTimed today, we both had our cats with us, and both of us wanted to pet each other's cats and scratch that sweet spot behind their ears that makes them purr. I tried to reach through the screen more than once, to no avail. I can't wait to scratch all of my friends' cats. There's always the hope that quarantine will be lifted before the end of May and we'll have an extended summer (with some schoolwork). We'll see what happens, and hope for a vaccine and more widespread testing.
