I sighed contentedly as I picked up my surfboard, my limbs aching from the amount of work I'd just put into surfing. That was my workout finished for the day, and all I wanted to do was go home and sleep for a week.
Seeing as Jotaro and Kakyoin were busy, I didn't stay out late, as per Kakyoin's request. And it was a reasonable request at that, seeing as there was a random guy lounging around alone on the beach for almost the entirety of the day. I eyed him curiously, watching him pack up his things as I began to walk by. And suddenly I regretted my decision to wear a swimsuit rather than a wetsuit on this evening in particular.
I began to speed walk to test my hunch, unsure of wether or not it was my imagination that this guy had his eye on me. But watching him pick up the pace to put away his belongings in the backpack he'd brought, I knew that my gut feeling was right.
As I reached the stone pedestrian pavement, two possible courses of action crossed my mind. Make a run for it, and hope that he doesn't catch up before he sees where I actually live, or go to Jotaro's house to ask for help since he lives closer to the beach than I do. I closed my eyes and sighed, turning in the direction of Jotaro's house since I didn't want to risk having a permanent stalker in my life. Here's hoping he's actually at home right now..
I proceeded to jog in that direction, hoping the stalker would feel too awkward to match my pace in order to stay within range. But he shamelessly continued to follow my every move, probably because there was barely anybody out in the colder evenings like this. I gulped, trying my best to swallow the anxiety building up in my mind as I fought the urge to stop for a break. My bones were sore, my muscles throbbing with each painful step. But who knows what a creep like him could do if that were to happen.
As his home finally came into view, I picked up the pace, noting that the guy had slowed down slightly to watch me enter the house, all to ensure that I wasn't misleading him. A cautious stalker, but an idiotic one for being so obvious about his intentions.
As I walked up to the door, I knocked a few times and took a step back, shivering from the cold as a sharp gust of wind blew past and caused goosebumps to rise on my exposed arms and legs. "Ah, hello (Y/n)!" Jotaro's mom beamed upon noticing me standing just outside the doorway. "It's cold out. You shouldn't be standing outside like that." She attempted to usher me inside, but I smiled politely and shook my head. "That's quite alright, thank you. I just wanted to ask if Jotaro was here..?"
"Do you need something?" I heard his slightly curious but concerned tone sound from behind the door before he came into view. My body heaved a heavy sigh of relief at the sound. "I'll leave you two to it.. You should come visit more often - I'll make tea!" And with that, Holly bowed courteously and disappeared into the kitchen to let Jotaro stand by the doorway instead. "Is everything okay?"
"Someone's been following me." I attempted to smile lightly, trying not to act overly anxious. But knowing him, he saw right through my act. His eyes suddenly narrowed, pupils dilating to make his eyes seem darker and much angrier than usual. "Where?"
"Over by the trees to my left." I nodded my head ever so slightly to the left, watching as his eyes flickered over to that area instantly, desperately searching for the person I was so worried about. And once his eyes caught sight of the man hiding by one of the bushes, he let out a scoff. "Yare yare daze.." He muttered, cap tilting to hide his ominous eyes that I could barely recognise anymore.
"Wait inside." He demanded in a toughened tone of voice, his attempt to soften its projection going unnoticed as it was a much more aggressive side to him that I've never seen. It caused a shiver to run down my spine, only because I was worried about what he'd do to the guy. He sighed harshly, gaze shifting to me with regret somehow interlaced within his steadily building rage.
Without another word, he removed his jacket, and draped it over my shivering shoulders before walking away to deal with the stalker.
I stared down at the coat that dragged slightly against the wooden floor as I entered the house, too long for me to wear as anything but a temporary blanket. It smelled freshly washed, expertly ridded of the cigarette stench that would usually build up on the material during the day. It was a surprisingly less intimidating scent, and reminded me more of his mother aside from the subtle hints of his cologne at the jacket's collar and sleeves.
I seated myself beside the doorway to relax my pained muscles that could barely keep me balanced anymore. I winced, kneading my thighs and calves to try and ease up the tightened muscles as well as distract myself from the sounds of shouting and pleading sounding from just outside the door.
"Ora!!" ....silence.
My heart dropped as all went quiet, the only sounds to be heard being Holly prancing about in the kitchen while humming quietly to herself. I shut my eyes closed tightly, thoughts of Jotaro going overboard swirling through my mind with different outcomes to that one scenario. No heavy fleeing footsteps could be heard, so the guy was clearly knocked unconscious at the very least..
"(Y/n)." I jolted at the sudden closeness of Jotaro's voice, wavering eyes looking up to meet his. I unconsciously gulped as his face showed clear signs of fright, maybe even fear. Did something go wrong? "A-are you okay? What happened?" And as if I'd simply imagined it, his expression completely shifted to become more mellowed in a matter of milliseconds.
"He won't be bothering you again." Was all he decided to say as he held his palm out towards me, trying to help me back up onto my feet. My eyes trailed down to see slight redness on the sides of his hand, so instead of accepting his help, I took ahold of his hand and flipped it upside down to get a view of his knuckles. I gasped at the early signs of bruising as well as the droplets of his own blood forming from his final punch.
He retracted his hand and sighed heavily, eyes now downcast to try and hide himself from my worried gaze. This was a part of him that he clearly didn't want me to see. He probably felt that he'd disappointed me to a certain degree. But when he felt a pair of comforting arms wrap around his neck, his eyes widened out of pure confusion and he automatically froze.
"Thank you. You're a lifesaver.." I whispered, nuzzling my face into the crook of his neck. He sighed softly, hesitating before wrapping his arms firmly around my waist to envelop me in a tight embrace. As he leaned further into the hug, one of his hands pressed against my left shoulder blade, pushing my body even closer to his.
The feeling of his warm breath pressing against my shoulder as his tense figure began to relax made me smile to myself, happy to see him calming down from whatever it was that startled him. I didn't expect him to like hugs so much either, seeing as he's typically a bit standoffish in these affectionate situations.
"Come on, I'll bring you home." While in the midst of our hug, he lifted me up by my waist with little warning. I clung to him tighter, hiding myself within the ruffles of his bundled up jacket as well as his broad shoulder. While effortlessly holding me in one arm, he lifted my surf board in the other, and began to leave in another direction to purposefully avoid approaching the man from earlier.
I regretfully peeked my head up from my cover, and took a quick glance at the guy who lay unconscious a good few feet from where their fight took place. And it was only then did I see why Jotaro seemed so shocked. Unless he'd dragged his unconscious body to create those defined marks in the gravel, it would be inhuman to be able to throw a punch to cause someone to fly that far from where he originally stood..
I decided not to dwell on it, laying my head back down to try and clear my thoughts. But in my attempts to shake the uncertainty from my mind, I found myself straying further and further from reality, my sleepiness suddenly catching up to me and draining the energy from my body in an instant. The adrenaline had finally worn off, and the lulling of Jotaro's body walking towards my home only added to my tired state. He was clearly trying not to move too much, keeping his upper body as steady as it could be, only serving to calm me down even more.
Unable to utter even a simple goodnight, I felt my limbs become much heavier, eyelids drooping to accommodate the dreams about to follow. The sounds around me began to get sharper and more echoed. Heavy footsteps, a strong heartbeat, consistent exhales that left a feeling of warmth surge throughout my body, lingering with each inaudible inhale. And sure enough, everything around me eventually faded as I drifted into unconsciousness.
