It was early July, and the sun could not have been shining brighter on this particularly hot summers day. The sand scorched the bare soles of my feet as I sprinted across the beach, steadily making my way towards the waves that seemed to be calling me, beckoning me towards the water I surfed on routinely.
This was a typical summers day for me. In my opinion, summer is the best time of the year because it meant that school was out for a solid three months, and I could spend that quarter of a year surfing to my heart's content.
I catapulted my surfing board down into the water once I reached an adequate depth, and planted my body down onto it, now using my arms to propel myself against the oncoming waves. I had the entire day to myself, alone with the ocean at last.
The cool splashing of the salty seawater rushing over my body sent shivers down my spine, encouraging small goosebumps to rise across the entirety of my (s/c) skin. But I couldn't have cared less. The sheer delight of being this close to the water was overwhelming, enough to completely block out the cold sensations.
It wasn't uncommon for me to leave home early in the morning, only to return around dusk. (I'm a morning person, so it wasn't difficult/I'm not a morning person, but my surfing mania would always encourage me to suffer through it/etc).
By the time early evening had set in, I was utterly exhausted. Yet there I sat, my back resting flat across surfing board, my body sprawled out comfortably as I basked in the fading sunlight. The captivating orange and gold tones of the sky were almost perfectly reflected onto the water below, the few small waves in the distance barely shaking its radiant image. The water was so calm and quiet, the beach now almost completely deserted as the night drew closer.
I slowly swiped my arms through the water to gradually paddle myself back to shore, so content with floating over the surface of the ocean that I couldn't bare to leave it. No doubt I would be back tomorrow, but even the thought of returning so soon wouldn't shake my reluctancy to leave. Nothing made me happier than straying away from the beach's shore, into an entirely different world that I could so easily get lost in.
I could feel soft grains of sand lightly grazing my fingertips as I finally edged closer to the beach. I stretched out my fingers to allow the silt to pass through, watching as it glided past them effortlessly, flowing amidst the current. I arose to sit straight on my board, swinging both my legs to one side of it to stand up. But before I could even set my feet down, I noticed something peculiar in the distance that peaked my interest.
An almost ominous man in the near distance, wearing a large black cloak paired with a matching hat, kneeling down on the darkened sand. He blended imperfectly into the sun-kissed beachfront, his silhouette quite clearly outlined by the golden sky that graced his looming figure, yet there was something so beautiful about the contrast.
Situated by his feet lay a small sea creature, clearly beached and left stranded before the man approached it. This wasn't an unusual occurrence, since dolphins and whales get beached along these sandy shores on a monthly basis. Aside from the small dolphin that appeared to be only a calf, I noticed another small flash of light.
The same flicker of sunlight cascading down onto a small handheld blade that had originally caught my attention.
I shot up from the surf board in a fluster, hurriedly tucking the object under my arm as I sprinted off in the direction of the unknown figure that towered over the helpless little dolphin. "Hey! Stop!" I tried waving my free arm about to catch his attention. He glanced my way, but dismissed me soon after, turning back to the small creature with the pocket knife still held securely in his hand, inching closer and closer to it.
As I grew closer to him, I grabbed both sides of my surf board and stabbed it harshly into a random section of sand, just so I could collect it later on my trek home. "Don't hurt it!" I cried out, desperately trying to get the stranger to back away from it. I didn't know what he had planned to do with it, and feared for its life. The sea creatures around these parts were heavily protected, the reason being that tourists would often take interest in beached wildlife, poking at them to scope them out instead of returning them to the ocean, only worsening the situation.
As I finally caught up to the man, I grabbed his wrist and tugged at it harshly, pulling it back from the barely breathing animal that lay vulnerable before us. I needed to return it to the water quickly before he could do any harm to it.
The man eyed me suspiciously, my enraged (e/c) orbs meeting his narrowed blueish-green eyes. Our brief moment of silence was short-lived as he decided to speak up seconds later.
"I'm helping it."
I furrowed my brows together in utter confusion, looking down at the little dolphin to see just what he was talking about. And low and behold, a small and sharp finishing net was lodged inside its mouth, the fine material tangled around his teeth and pressing heavily into some of its flesh. "Oh my-.." I instantly let go of the man's wrist accompanied by a shocked gasp that managed to escape my lips, letting him continue to cut the net that caused the animal such discomfort.
Once the netting was successfully removed, he picked it up quite delicately and began to carefully walk to the water, mindful of its weak whimpers and clicks with each broad step. Once he was standing a few feet out from the shore, he set it down in the water and watched as it flapped its tail about, happily swimming free, returning to its home and what we could only presume was its family when it reunited with a school of larger dolphins further out to sea.
I approached the mysterious man a little hesitantly, standing by his side as we watched them swimming farther and farther away, eventually disappearing beneath the darkening horizon. "I'm sorry... I misunderstood the situation." I felt slight guilt towards my actions, but I was mostly proud of myself. Had he been another tourist trying to hurt the little dolphin, I would have intervened and probably saved its life.
"Yare yare.." He simply tipped his hat down slightly, casting a dark shadow over the upper half of his face to hide his eyes.
"It's nice to see people actually concerned about marine life for once.." I mused as I proceeded to walk away, turning to collect my board from where I buried it slightly in the sand. I pulled at the wooden frame's sides gently, just enough for it to ease out of the sand and into my grasp.
As I tucked it firmly under my arm, I tilted my head up to meet his gaze once again, suddenly taking notice of how striking his eyes were. Even without the contrasting colours around us to use as a comparison, they seemed to glow a peculiar colour that reminded me of the ocean. The perfect mix of a soft turquoise-green with icy blue undertones that perfectly resembled something I cherished so much.
Now that I had a better view of him, his entire physique was strikingly beautiful. From his sharp jawline to his broadened shoulders, chiselled body and flawless facial features. It was impossible to find a single flaw anywhere. Surely he was a school heartthrob, maybe even a model. I'd be surprised if he wasn't.
"I never got your name." He stated quite abruptly, catching me a little off-guard seeing as we had both previously been eyeing each other in silence. "(S/n) (Y/n)." The very outer corner of my lips curled up on the left side to reveal a small half-smile. "And you are?" The man averted his gaze, his eyes now fixated on the slow rise and fall of the water travelling along the seashore. "Kujo Jotaro.."
I watched him in complete silence as he left, dumbfounded beyond definition. He was clearly such a cold character, yet his eyes held such warmth.. Not to mention his earlier actions, saving that dolphin's life.. He was intriguing to say the least.
I hope to see you soon.. Kujo Jotaro..
