A New Family
Clary would be lying if she said she wasn't surprised by the news. She hadn't been ignorant the past eight months. She'd heard the noises from her parents' room (gross!), she'd noticed her mother's weird cravings, and it would be difficult to not see the growing bulge. In other words, she had known Jocelyn was pregnant long before she was told.
"Well?" said a voice.
Clary shuddered involuntarily. It wasn't Jonathan's fault that he used to be half demon and fully evil, but his voice still reminded her of the boy who had killed ruthlessly.
"Aren't you going to say something?" he pushed. His question was matched by the curiosity in Jocelyn's and Luke's eyes.
"What's there to say?" Clary shrugged. "I already noticed. You know, my amazing Shadowhunter detective skills."
Jonathan snorted. "By which she means pure nosiness. So, is the baby a boy or a girl?"
"Girl," Jocelyn answered, glancing fondly at her swollen stomach.
It was as if Clary was jerked back in time. She just entered Edom, but she was in Alicante, the capital of Idris, at her mother's house. Jonathan was normal, and there was a little girl with Jocelyn's red hair and Luke's blue eyes. Valentina was her name, after Clary's brave father who had died in battle.
But that wasn't what happened. Valentine was evil. As was Sebastian, but now he was Jonathan: a good man.
"I'll be an older sister," she whispered.
It was all Clary had ever wanted: a real family. Sure, she'd heard kids at school complain about being the middle child. But she'd always loved the idea of having both a protector and someone to protect.

"Jocelyn's pregnant?" Isabelle asked, shocked. "She can be pregnant?"
"Yes, Isabelle," Jace answered. "That's how Jonathan and Clary here were born."
Isabelle rolled her eyes. "You know what I mean. It's hard to imagine our parents being able to have kids now. I mean, Alec's nineteen now. Can you imagine having a brother nineteen years older than you?"
Clary glared at Izzy and Jace. "The point is that I'm having a little sister...just like I saw in Edom."
Jace tensed, probably remembering the vision he had. Though Clary had always done her best to remind him of his goodness, she was perfectly aware that he still sometimes worried, especially after the vision he'd seen-each of their group was showed their supposed deepest desire by a demon. While Clary, Isabelle, Alec, and Simon each were showed something they wanted with certain details that snapped them out, Jace's vision was of him as an evil overlord, all his loved ones trapped in a cage.
"That's...unusual," Alec spoke up. "What are the odds that a demon shows you a vision of a good brother, your mother and Luke married, and a little sister, then next thing we know, your mother and Luke finally had their wedding, Jonathan showed up completely cured of all evilness, and now your mom's pregnant with a little girl? No offense, Jonathan."
Jonathan waved away Alec's apology, deep in thought. "The wish-demon... maybe we should research it."
It was almost as if they could read each other's minds: Jonathan and Alec simultaneously jumped to their feet and ran to the library.
"By the Angel," Jace sighed. "Not another bookworm. We'll never survive if we go on this way."
Clary glared at Jace. "Believe it or not, that so-called bookworm was the reason I have a brother."
Instead of responding with a snappy retort, Jace simply leaned back in his chair, smirking. Sure, Jace was hot, but also very annoying. Sometimes Clary had to wonder how everyone tolerated him for so long.
Jace, Isabelle, and Clary sat in silence for a few moments before an interruption arrived in the form of Shadowhunter-in-training Simon Lewis.
"Look, it's the mundie-turned-bloodsucker-turned-mundie," Jace commented.
"Shadowhunter now," Simon easily responded, sinking onto Isabelle's bed. Even when Simon's slowly returning memory escaped him, he was incredibly good at deflecting Jace's insults.
"Would it kill you to actually try to be friends?" Clary asked.
Jace stared at Simon thoughtfully. "You know, it might. I haven't tried."
Clary opened her mouth, but Jace was saved from her response by the return of Jonathan and Alec. The two were toting a large, heavy volume that was unfamiliar to her, though she surely would have noticed such a large book in the Institute's library. The book was titled Lesser-Known, Incredibly Frightening Greater Demons. As interesting as that sounded, Clary was glad that Alec and Jonathan did all the reading.
"I suppose this is the part where you show us your fifty-page, thoroughly cited, heavily edited, plagiarism-checked essay on this demon." Jace sighed heavily. "I'll survive somehow, thank you for your concerns."
Alec, as usual, ignored this. "This demon is called Hazonel, coming from the Hebrew roots-"
"This," Jace interrupted, "is not a report on the origin of demons' names. Get to the point."
"This is important, so by telling you the origins, we are getting to the point," Jonathan took over. "So, the name comes from the Hebrew word 'hazon' meaning 'dream' and 'el' meaning 'of God.' The 'el' bit means he used to be an angel, so he probably was some sort of angel that sent good dreams or whatever. Then he joined Lucifer, Azazel, Asmodeus, and some other angels in their decision to rule in Hell instead of serving in Heaven. He can sense what our desires are, but he can only give us a vague, warped version of what we really want. To snap out of the visions, you will have to notice a detail - small or large - that helps you realize the wrongness. For example, a missing person in your life would do the trick."
"Except for the name bit, we knew all that," Simon pointed out. "Is there just nothing to worry about?"
Alec fidgeted uncomfortably like he didn't want to talk. He and Jonathan locked eyes briefly, making Clary wonder how telepathy between them happened so quickly. Instead of explaining whatever they wanted to explain, they set the book on the ground and flipped to a page in the middle, grunting as they lifted it off Isabelle's fluffy carpet and onto Isabelle's and Clary's laps.
The demon Hazonel, though virtually unheard of, is one of the more threatening demons in existence. His name, meaning "vision of God," hints to his powers: showing visions. Long ago, before he had fallen, Hazonel must have used them for good, but now he lurks at the entrances to Edom. He can see desires, though through a warped mirror, and spins from these wishes a vision to ensnare his victim.
Very few Shadowhunters have encountered this demon. Even fewer have lived to tell the tale. But those who still possessed both life and sanity recounted their visions to aid in the research of Hazonel. A small percentage of the viewers returned to happy lives where they noticed people or places from their visions.
These Shadowhunters met together for collaborative research and reached the conclusion that there was more to the name than at first thought. The word hazon (original Hebrew: חזון) means vision. Given Hazonel's powers, we accept this as a reference to the visions he creates, but it can also be interpreted as prophecy. From this we decide that the visions Hazonel creates, if he desires, can show a glimpse into the future.
But a demon's desires are never beneficial to any human, be it Shadowhunter or mundane. As perfect as these visions falling into place may seem, they are of demonic origin for a reason. Perhaps a newly married woman would see herself giving birth to a baby in the vision: something may go horribly wrong so the child hates her and wishes to murder her. Perhaps a brave Shadowhunter sees himself ending a war: he may have broken some law in the process and be sent to the Silent City prisons for life after only one night of celebration.
Any Shadowhunter who has faced Hazonel and seen their vision falling into place should be on guard!
Clary and Jace finished reading quickly, far faster than the others, and exchanged worried glances above Isabelle's head. What could this possibly mean? Being as used to the sensation of fright as she was, Clary already began running through possibilities in her head.
Valentina - or whatever her name would end up being in real life, clearly something else - had already been proven innocent, so the example in the book couldn't possibly apply. Clary knew Jonathan, as well, was fully good. Each day Jonathan spent as the good person he was, the rune that gave him enough goodness to live faded a little. After ten months, it was nearly gone: an excellent sign toward Sebastian's character improvement.
So what could go wrong?
Clary didn't want to know, but she strongly suspected that she would find out anyway.

A/N: Chapter 1 is up right before I'm going offline for four weeks. In case you didn't know, I made up Hazonel by myself, but his name means exactly what I said it means. (Hebrew is the other language that I learn because Jewish school equals Hebrew instead of Spanish or French.) So, enjoy! Also vote/comment/share with friends, please!
