Chapter 4: Heroes...?

Warning: Mature Language

"We have summoned all of you because our world is in constant doom. As the demon king threatens to rise up again, our powers as humans have started to decrease as of late. So, for this reason, we have summoned you, the chosen heroes, to save our world again." The King spoke, taking his seat proudly on the extravagant throne, before turning to them.

"Now, my apologies, I forgot to introduce myself. How impolite of me. I'm King Thaddeus, the King of the Dalek Empire, one of the 4 most powerful empires in the world. Now please, come forward and introduce yourselves." The king rested his head on his fist, looking pleased with himself.

Melanie, slightly frowned, as she held a bad feeling in her heart. The girl with the whip came forward, as she proudly replied. "My name is Dahlia Strong, Your Majesty."She bowed slightly, before stepping back, making Melanie confused.

'How the hell can she easily adapt to the situation...???' The blonde guy with the sword came up and proudly thumped his chest, with his fist. "I am Lukas Mago, your majesty. Please refer to me as Lukas."

The boy beside her fixed his glasses and stepped forward. "I am Alex. Alex Fran, your majesty." He stepped back politely.

Melanie looked around, not noticing how the king glared at her in disgust, as he took in the color of her eyes.

"And you are...?" He reluctantly asked her, noticing how she hadn't replied yet, making him ticked off.

Melanie looked at him, before muttering something under her breath.

"You...speak up. What did you say?" He narrowed his eyes at her challengingly. She looked straight into his eyes, unaffected, as she looked at him lazily, "... Jolly."

After all, Melanie didn't want to continue with that stupid name of hers. She also has to start fresh with another name, so it won't be easy to find her.

Yet, she had always remembered how she stole a Jolly Rancher one time and fell in love with that candy, so she referred to the word jolly, from that candy, to remind her of the best things in life, that she was able to experience, and how she made herself a promise to be a jolly person in the future, with no more bruises or pain.

"...Jolly...Well, Jolly," He tested the name under his breath, as his expression held a look of disgust, that did not go unnoticed by her or the others standing beside her. "What interesting eyes you got there."

"...Thank you...?"  She hesitantly replied, as she stood awkwardly in her spot and made no attempt to step forward or bow down. This made the king feel more animosity towards her, as he felt that she was belittling his status.

However, he ignored it, as he looked at the others. They were all fairly powerful weapons compared to the weird girl's. Her bag looked worn down and useless, which made him more pissed for wasting energy on summoning her.

"I have gathered all the sources I could to summon you all here. You're our only hope, as the Summoned heroes have come to fight off the demons and the monsters that have threatened and come to advance on us more, attacking innocent villages and people. We need your help."

The king sighed helplessly, as he put his forehead on his palm in a distressing matter, making the other heroes shift as they appeared shocked and empathetic, making Jolly groan lightly in disdain.

She wasn't planning on falling for that stupid trick anytime soon. It was too old. Her "father" had done it on many occasions with her, when she first tried to escape from that stupid laboratory she was locked in.

She had also previously observed how many other people acted in such a way, when they were trying to get what they wanted from the others, like borrowing money or bribing others for arson or theft. So, seeing the king act like this...just made her feel...bored.

Fortunately or not, no one seemed to notice her reaction, as the king continued on. "The Demon King is on the verge of rising, and we cannot survive on our own. In the past, as well, we had to summon heroes such as you, who were able to save our world, and now that our world is in jeopardy again, we had no choice, but to summon you."

Jolly was terribly confused, as she hesitantly raised her hand, making the king threaten to roll his eyes in annoyance. "Yes?"

"You said that we're heroes that saved the world and that we basically happen to be a big deal type of heroes, right?" Jolly raised her eyebrow, as she put her index finger on her chin in thought. "If that's the case, where are the other kingdoms? Since summoning us is a big deal, it shouldn't have been done by just one kingdom, right? If that's the case, aren't you trying to take advantage of the others by being the kingdom that's training and keeping the said heroes?"

"Nonsense!" He angrily smacked his hands on the armrests of his throne. "I am a king, who's devoted to his people and the world! I wouldn't be doing this, if I had an alternative!"

Jolly frowned, "But you did. You had the choice of inviting at least the neighboring kingdoms over to avoid conflicts arising from them, as they're probably pissed off right now at the fact that you did such an important thing behind their backs."

Before she could continue any further, the King stood up angrily, "How dare you make such accusations! I'm only thinking for the best of the whole world. As for the neighboring kingdoms, our kingdom is the most powerful, so they don't have the guts to think about such things!"

Jolly sighed, as she put her crossed her arms across her chest. She suddenly remembered a saying that the Doc had used one time, and although he used it under the wrong context, she could still remember it. "I'd like to disagree. After all, 'little drops of water make the mighty ocean.'

Jolly couldn't remember what happened next, as everything became a daze, but she later found herself in another room with the other heroes, she lay on the little cushion on the window seal and watched the stars that she couldn't remember when the last time she saw them.

Her greasy and dirty hair was finally cleaned up and all the sweat and dirt on her body was also cleaned, as Jolly was now dressed in a casual outfit that fit her perfectly. She was now holding onto her bag tightly in her arms, as the other heroes were introducing themselves and talked about themselves.

"What about you, Jolly?" She turned around to see Dahlia with a startled and confused look in her eyes.  "...What?"

"What school did you go to? How about family or friends? Miss anyone back home?"

Jolly hesitated but slowly shook her head. "No school. No family... No one." Dahlia's eyes slowly became full of pity for her, which made Jolly feel worse about the situation. She didn't like that feeling.

"Does that mean you can't read? You must be stupid." Lukas sneered. Jolly just stared at him. "I know how to read. I'm not stupid." She didn't want to say anymore, as she slowly leaned and was about to grab a biscuit from the table when she heard the same annoying voice speak again.

"That's right, you should eat as much as you can since you don't know when you can next eat such luxury goods." Jolly glared at Lukas in disgust, as the remaining two heroes just sat there awkwardly, not knowing what to say or do.

Getting tired, Jolly, rolled her eyes subtly, as she rose from her seat and went inside her assigned room. Closing and locking the door, Jolly sighed as she laid down on the soft bed, feeling strange.

It was all too easy and fast. It was completely nervewracking to think about it, but something told Jolly, that the Doc was planning something and she didn't like it.

Not to mention, instead of being locked in a tube or on the dirty, rough streets, this was the first time that Jolly had a taste of such soft furniture, which made her jump on it a bit, like a kid.

Looking down at her bag, Jolly decided to open it and observe it again. This time, as took out the herbs one by one, and she noticed some potions that felt all too familiar, and the last thing she took out was this closed tiny bag with needles organized in order with little different colors on the edges of each one.

Jolly sighed, as fatigue started overwhelming her, and she decided to put the stuff back again in the worn-out satchel, and put it on the counter near her bed, before laying down carefully on the mattress she was lying on. In the past, she couldn't dream of laying on such a soft bed, but now? Now she just didn't know what to feel..

Standing up, she glanced around the room, before her eyes paused on the mirror hanging before her eyes.

She felt that her body was too thin. It would make sense after all, since she never had the right nutrition. She took in her dark eyebags under her eyes, her dark long hair, and her height. Thinking back on the height of the others, she couldn't help but blurt out: "... too short..."

She shook her head as she started to gaze around the room, before her eyes found some books in the corner, near a desk with papers and a quill, making her smile. Rushing to it, she grabbed a random book as she opened it, before sitting down on the desk chair. Opening it carefully, she opened her first book, and she tried her best to read it.

There were still quite a good amount of words that she struggled with, but she still made progress as she grabbed the quill with the other hand and started to scribble something on it slowly, looking at the book and the paper repeatedly.

And like that, Jolly had taken advantage of the time she had to read through more books and study as much as she could. After all, how can she let such an opportunity go to waste?
