"Sherlock, why exactly have you dragged us out this early in the morning" John grumbled, trying to calm the crying child next to him.
"You will see John, it will all make sense soon." The detective had been very cryptic all morning, never really answering John's questions. Rosie was miserable, crying the entire trip.
"Sherlock-"
"Just trust me John." The blogger sighed, settling back for the car ride.
It was a long drive, and when they finally pulled to a stop, John was no less confused then before. Sherlock unbuckled Rosie and lifted her from the car, taking John's hand and leading them along a path covered by an archway of trees.
"Sherlock?"
"Yes Love?"
"Where are we?" John asked, admiring the scenery as they walked.
"My family's summer home." John stopped, gawking at his boyfriend. "You were talking last week about how you wished you could give Rosie a proper Easter with family, so I decided to give you both one." John felt his heart swell at the soft blush that took over Sherlock's cheeks.
"Sherlock-"
"Well hello there!" The men turned to see Sherlock's mother practically running down the path. "I thought I heard talking. Come here you! I want to see little Rosie!" Sherlock set Rosie down and the child ran into the arms of Mrs. Holmes.
"Hello Mother." Mrs. Holmes straightened and pulled Sherlock in for a tight hug. She turned to John next, smiling brightly at him and wrapping him in her arms.
"How are my boys? You look utterly exhausted John, lets get to the house and I will make you some tea. What time did Sherlock have you up this morning?"
"Far too early."
"Oh, well I hope he let you get a bit of sleep last night at least. I can imagine he likes to keep you up rather late after little Rosie goes to sleep eh?" John blushed as she winked and patted his cheek.
"Mother!"
"Oh, hush William. We are all adults here." She tutted and took Rosie's hand, leading the excited child to the house. John grabbed Sherlock's elbow and spun him to face him, leaning up to press a soft kiss to his lips.
"Thank you." He whispered, smiling up at the man he loved so much.
"Anything to make you happy."
"Let's go see what your mother has planned, eh William?"
"Of course, Hamish."
"Don't call me Hamish."
"Then don't call me William." John giggled, kissing Sherlock again before taking his hand and leading him towards the house.
The Holmes parents had set up a lovely breakfast out on their patio, setting up under a massive apple tree. Rosie was running around the yard, giggling as Greg chased her. Sherlock had somehow managed to convince Mycroft and Lestrade to join them, effectively bringing together the entire Holmes family.
It had been years since John had felt like a part of a family, and now it looked like he had one.
"Hello John, Sherlock!" Mr. Holmes stepped out of the kitchen, carrying a tray of tea for everyone. He set the tray on the table and came over, pulling John and Sherlock in for a hug. "Happy Easter!"
Greetings were exchanged and tea was served. John fought with Rosie to get her to sit and eat, while Mrs. Holmes chattered on about Sherlock and Mycroft when they were kids.
Once the meal was finished, Mrs. Holmes led everyone out to the yard, handing each of them a basket.
"You can only find the color of eggs that matches your basket. Greg and Myc, you two are looking for green eggs, John and Sherlock, you are looking for blue eggs, and Rosie My Dear, you get to look for pink eggs. Everyone ready?"
"Do we have to do this Mummy? We aren't children-" Mycroft started to whine, but was cut off by Greg kissing his cheek and laughing.
"Come on Babe, it'll be fun!" John laughed as Mycroft blushed and Mrs. Holmes cooed, pinching her eldest son's cheeks before scurrying off to the sidelines.
"Ready, set, go!" Sherlock grabbed John's hand and tugged him towards the slightly wooded area in front of them, John giggling the entire way.
They hunted for their eggs, Sherlock motivated by the little chocolates his mother had hidden within the plastic eggs. John wasn't nearly as involved as Sherlock, stopping him when they were out of sight for a quick snog against a tree.
Once all the eggs had been found, they all made their way to the front yard again, Rosie plunking herself down in the grass to open all the eggs she had found.
"Daddy?" John and Sherlock were sitting at the table when Rosie approached them, handing John a purple egg before running away.
"Who had the purple eggs?" John asked, glancing at the baskets that were scattered around the yard. There were no purple baskets.
"Oh dear, I must have missed one. Go ahead and open it dear, you can have whatever is in it." John shrugged and popped open the plastic, frowning in confusion when he saw a piece of paper folded neatly inside. He pulled it out and opened it, feeling his chest tighten at what he read.
My Dearest John, will you marry me?
John looked up to see Sherlock kneeling in front of him, tears in his eyes. He could vaguely hear Mrs. Holmes gasping in glee, but he was too focused on Sherlock to give it much thought. His detective reached into his pocket, pulling out a small ring box with trembling fingers.
"John?"
"God Sherlock-"
"Will you marry me?" John sniffled, rubbing his hands over his face and taking a steadying breath. "God, John please say something."
"Sorry, sorry Love. Yes, God yes!" John sprung forward, wrapping his arms around his fiancé and kissing him, blushing as he heard the cheers of the family. He pulled away, letting Sherlock place the ring on his finger before kissing him again, the taste of their tears combining on his lips.
They stood, hands clasped together as they were congratulated by the family. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes offered to take Rosie for the night so they could celebrate in privacy
"Daddy, when are we going home?"
"You are going to stay here with Grandma and Grandpa for the night." He heard Mrs. Holmes gasp and looked up, catching sight of a group of shocked faces surrounding him. "What's wrong?"
"Y-you want us to- to be her- to be Rosie's- Grandparents?" Mr. Holmes stuttered, tears filling his eyes. John smiled, realizing what he had missed. They had never discussed the role of Sherlock and his family in Rosie's life.
"Of course, Rosie needs Grandparents and it only makes sense for her father's parents to hold that role."
"J-John-" Sherlock was fighting back tears now, his bottom lip trembling as he stared at John.
"Yes Love, you are her father, you have always been her father. Never doubt that." Sherlock let out a strangled sob and pulled John and Rosie into his arms.
Once goodbyes were exchanged, John and Sherlock were walking down the drive, accompanied by Greg and Mycroft.
"So, Greg, when are you and Mycroft getting hitched?"
"I have no idea."
"Have you talked about it?"
"Yeah, but I don't think he is really that interested in the idea."
"You should ask him!"
"No."
"Ah come on! I'll help."
"Thanks, but no. I'll let you know if that changes."
"Alright. See you guys!" Greg and Mycroft climbed into their car and drove off, leaving John and Sherlock to wait for their car to arrive. John pulled Sherlock close and kissed him, dipping his tongue into his mouth and sucking gently on his bottom lip.
"I love you."
"I love you too John."
"How long have you been planning this?"
"Since you mentioned Easter the other day. I figured I would make it extra special for you."
"God, I love you."
"I know." Sherlock winked, the cheeky grin that crossed his face making John giggle and kiss him again.
"Happy Easter Love."
"Happy Easter."
