Chapter One: A Tall Figure
I was as pure as a river,
But now I think I'm possessed.

I stepped out of the taxi, duffel bag and suitcase in hand. The gravel crunched and shifted beneath my feet while a cold breeze wafted through the air, tossing autumn leaves left and right.
I breathed in the bitter air, although the wind nipped at my red cheeks.
There was something so calm yet something so eerie about this place.
The large Victorian styled house stood tall and loomed over me. It was dark. The wooden porch was practically torn up from the ground. The overgrown weeds and tendrils had wrapped around every window pane. Every window seemed to be in perfect condition besides the fact, that they were dusty and damp.
One window appeared to be broken and empty, although, for a brief second, I thought I saw a tall figure standing in the window.
Snapping myself out of it, I hitched my duffel bag on my shoulder and rolled my suitcase. I made my way to the front door, walking up the creaking front porch steps.
Every step creaked beneath me. I reached the very last step with a gentle foot.
I hauled my suitcase up and with a loud creak, I shrieked.
My foot fell through the step.
I felt some sort of animal scurry around my foot as I shrieked louder.
"Good heavens, what is all the commotion- Oh! Lilith, dear, it's you! Come in!" Grandma Violet squinted as she spoke to me.
Anyone would think she was some creepy old witch, the way she was peeping through the crack of the door.
"Grandma, I would but I'm in a bit of trouble here." I twisted and turned my foot as I squealed in pain.
"Oh, I'm sorry about that step, sweetheart! I was supposed to get that fixed weeks ago." Grandma opened the door wider, revealing her skinny frame in sweatpants and a cotton shirt.
She walked over to me and crouched down. She tugged my leg out without warning causing me to fall flat on my bum. I lifted the cuff of my left pant leg to check my ankle. It was red but luckily, not injured or bleeding.
"Oh, I'm sorry, sweets!" Grandma Violet chuckled and helped me up.
I grabbed my duffel bag and suitcase handle as she helped me up.
"Thanks." I brushed the dirt off my knees and looked around the porch.
"Welcome to my lovely home! I hope you'll feel comfy and safe here. After all, that was quite the spur of the moment business trip your mother took. Such a transition!" She looked at me with pity and I tucked my hair behind my ears.
"I'm fine." I offered a smile, to which she only frowned at before wrapping an arm around me and gesturing for me to go inside.
I enter the house as Grandma shuts the door behind me. The chandelier above us flickered and dimly lit up the hall. A spiral staircase, not too far, with red carpeting led upstairs to what was probably bedrooms. There was a living room to the left with velvet dusty couches and worn out leather chairs. A dining room to the right of us shone beneath another, smaller chandelier. In the dining room, was a long brown wooden table and several chairs.
"Do you like?" Grandma asked me with a grin.
"It's very vintage?" I smiled uneasily and she laughed.
"No need to lie, girl, I know it needs renovation." Grandma patted my back and laughed. I smiled at her and laughed softly.
"Come on, let's show you to your room." Grandma Violet led me upstairs to the bedrooms.
There was another hallway and Grandma Violet stopped suddenly, making me crash into her back.
"My bedroom is down the hall, yours is first, on the left." Grandma reached for the doorknob, opening the bedroom door agonizingly slow. Once she opened it fully, I gasped.
"Is this okay? I didn't know-"
"It's perfect." I smiled at her.
The room had dark purple wallpaper, giving it a classy but modern essence. Most of the furniture was black and purple. There were a window seat and a black vanity with a large mirror. The canopy bed was black with silk purple sheets and quilts.
"Thanks, Grandma Violet." I hugged her tightly and she chuckled.
"No problem, dear. I'll let you get settled." She began to walk out of my new room but before she could leave, I called her name.
"Yes?"
"Were you, by any chance, in one of the bedroom windows watching me when I had first arrived?" I asked her curiously and she stared back at me confused.
"Why would I do that? I was in the kitchen the entire time." She stared at me with her hand on the doorknob.
"But..oh, never mind." I rolled my lips into my mouth nervously and she nodded closing the door.
