Chapter Nine: Alone

I just wanna rock the boat,
                     And raise some hell.
Set fire to my own damn bed
'cause I never wanna sleep again.

"Go left- no, my left! No, that's your right. You know what, just forget it. Forget this conquest and forget whatever you're trying to accomplish here!"

"Shut up, I don't even know why you're here or how. And just for the record, I'm an excellent navigator, with or without you." I scoffed as I turned left.

Alec rolled his eyes. "With your luck, you're going to run over a goddamn raccoon."

I ignored him and grabbed my phone, placing it against my ear. "Hello? Oh, it's for you. It's your psychiatrist, they want to prescribe you medication that's actually useful." I grinned innocently at him.

Alec glared at me for a few minutes before turning his head to watch the water droplets that had stuck to the outside of his window.

When we left the manor, it began to rain making this whole trip dreary and miserable. The rain rolled off the windows of the car and splashed onto the hood, once the windshield wipers were activated.

"The rain's peaceful, huh?" I broke the comfortable silence.

Alec faced me and gave me a gentle smile.
"It is, but it's lovelier in person."

I instantly felt bad for him as we stopped at a stop sign. "You've...never felt or seen rain?"

Alec laughed and placed a hand over his mouth, running it down his jaw. "Of course, I have! God, Lilith, you don't understand how hard I am trying to hold back any sarcastic comments."

He stifled his laughter again and I shook my head. "Seriously though, you can't feel rain?"

Alex shook his head no and I turned to the right as we neared our destination.
"But I can feel you when you touch me? How does that work?"

Alec scratched his neck with a dry chuckle.
"Ghosts can't feel, but you can feel them. Their presence, their touch- if that makes any sense?" He replied uneasily.

Once I pulled into the parking lot, I faced him and intertwined my fingers, playing with them anxiously.

I licked my dry lips. "So, ghosts can't feel?"

Alec looked up at me and tilted his head. "Yes, I can't feel a goddamn thing." He gave a sardonic smile and I frowned.

I prepared to ask another question, but Alec just rolled his eyes in annoyance. "Please, just don't say another word. I already feel like my head is going to explode. God, you talk so much!" He exclaims, rubbing his temples.

I sighed, exasperated. "Fine, we're here."

Alec took in his surroundings and scoffed a little. "God, Lilith-."

I interrupted his whining. "What's wrong, now?" I rolled my eyes. His voice was so irritating.

Alec summed up an exasperated look as he thre his hands in the air. "Is this how you see me? Some cheap date? Because I can assure you, I am anything but cheap." Alec sassed, gesturing to the motel in front of us.

I grunted in reply. Ripping the keys from the ignition and slamming the car door, I heard Alec's taunting chuckle echo as his transparent body slipped through the door.

"You annoy me." I sighed with my eyes closed.

Alec's laughter died down and he coughed. "I've been thinking .."

I opened the motel's creaky swinging door. A bell above us chimed. "Is that ever a good thing?"

He ignored me. "What are you going to do when your grandmother finds out you took her car?"

I walked up to the front desk, leaning against it. I stared at the dusty countertop in deep thought.

What was I going to do?

I shrugged, running a finger through the dust. I rubbed the pads of my index finger and thumb together to rid my skin of the dust. "I don't know, whatever will be, will be."

Alec huffed. "Que Sera." He drawled.

"Can I help you, young lady?" An older woman, maybe in her late fifties, stared at me strangely.

"Yes-." I turn to look at my ghostly friend for assistance and he grins at me wickedly.

"Uh. Can we have a room?" I asked, pulling out my wallet.

"We? Is there someone else coming?" The lady looked at me puzzled.

Beside me, Alec snickered, as I cursed. "You can't see him." I murmured.

The lady placed her hand on the desk phone cautiously. "Should I call someone? Ar-Are you okay?"

My eyes widened. "No!" I said a little too loudly as she jumped and Alec doubled over laughing.

With my ace, red as a tomato, I coaxed her. "I'm sorry- I apologize. I just need one room, for myself, for only one night. How much is that?" I gulped nervously.

She removed her hand from the phone as I exhaled and looked at an old desktop computer.

"It's usually one hundred, a night-," I prepared to curse again. "But since you're young, I would feel awfully bad if you were my daughter and lost in this horrid world. So you can stay for fifty. Think you can manage that?" She asked with a challenging gleam in her eye.

I nodded. "Sure." I pulled exactly fifty dollars from my wallet and handed it to her.

She nodded sympathetically and took the cash. She opened the register drawer and placed the money in its place. She purses her lips as she handed me an old-fashioned key. "Enjoy your stay." She sighed reluctantly.

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes and looked down at the card attached to the key.

Room 13.

I hurried down the long hallway with Alec's cold presence beside me.

A cool wind whisked from behind me as Alec appeared. "You know, thirteen is a very unlucky number."

I bit my tongue to refrain from swearing at him. "I don't believe in superstition."

Alec guffawed. "Yet, you're in a motel with a 212 year-old ghost."

I scoffed. "You've been seventeen for 212 years, there's a difference."

Alec murmured. "Keep telling yourself that."

I scanned the doors as we walked in silence. There was a room twelve and not too long after, there was room thirteen.

Alec levitated behind me while I unlocked the motel room door. Our room was dim, light bulbs flickered while a cool breeze from the window whisked the curtains in the air.

I ran over to the open windows. "Who would leave these open like that?" I slammed the windows shut. I wrapped my arms around myself as goosebumps began to rise on my skin.

Alec nodded, observing the room with sincerity. "Peculiar."

I stood straighter. "What do you mean, peculiar?" I unwrapped my arms and put my hands in my pockets.

"Lock the door." He said.

I began to panic. "Alec, what's wrong?" I reached for the door and locked it's two locks, a chain and a small metal bar.

Alec took a seat on the small bed in the room. He began to breathe unevenly.

"We're not alone."

Hey readers! It's been waaaay too long. I've been on a semi-hiatus for quite some time now due to exams and life.

( SO in case you forgot what has happened/everything leading up to this chapter: basically Lilith ran away from home to search for answers possibly from a particular person. The suspicious Griffin from school. Alec wouldn't let her leave alone so he decided to run away with her and they stole Grandma Violet's car. 😂)

I hope you enjoyed this chapter! Things are about to get interesting and dangerous... VERY dangerous.
It's good to be back ^.^
Thanks for reading!
