Twenty two - in which Simon runs, 'til the love runs out (AU)
"It's going to be epic. And it'll work." Simon was saying, making sure that his guitar was tuned. Isabelle was sitting on one of the large speakers, her leg over the other and moving it nervously. Her look was skeptical as she eyed Simon. "He is not into big gestures. You should know that, you dated him." Isabelle stated, watching as Simon scrambled around in the basement. "He said he thought they are stupid. He didn't say he doesn't like them." Simon replied, putting the guitar into its bag. Isabelle looked at him like he was crazy. Or dumb. Possibly both. "That's the same exact thing. Simon, I'm telling you, this is a bad idea." she said, picking on her long, red nails. Simon rolled his eyes. "Listen, I haven't seen him like a year, right? And then he shows up, we talk and he says he's not sure if I 'am ready' for this relationship. He dumped me, remember? He has trusting issues. I'll show him, that I don't care who knows, I want to try again." Simon stated, now looking around the room.
"Where the hell is my-" he started, but Isabelle raised the electric blue guitar pick, smiling. Simon went to snatch it, but Isabelle raised it out of his reach, hiding it in her palm. He scowled at her, but she stared at him, her pearly whites gleaming. "Simon, promise me you won't go all out. Just a simple song, dedicated to him. Nothing else. No balloons or fireworks or...puppies." Isabelle said, handing Simon the pick. "You're a darling, Isabelle. And when have I ever used puppies for a romantic gesture?" Simon asked, making Isabelle roll her eyes. She hopped down just as the door opened. "Simon, ready? The campus grounds are pretty packed already." Alec asked, coming in and giving his sister a kiss on the cheek. "Yeah, all set. Just a last minute check up. Hey, did Maia call you?" he asked, looking at the tall boy, while he heaved the guitar onto his back.
"Yeah, she said that Jace called him, saying he'll be there. I guess friendship still means something around here." Alec said, rolling his eyes and Isabelle raised an eyebrow. "Clary still hasn't called you?" she asked, looking at Alec worriedly. "Nope. I guess she's busy." Alec mumbled, thinking about his best friend who moved to Chicago a few months back. "I'm sure she's still getting to know the new place and all. Give her time." Simon comforted him. "Besides, you have Magnus." Isabelle piped up, smiling sweetly. Alec's face perked up a little. "Yeah, that's true." he said, a little happier. When they got out in the sun, Isabelle sighed. "Thank god it's almost summer break. I can't wait for this year to be over and then it'll be our last. Can you believe it? And we all get to finish it together, like the best friends we are. " she said, laughing, and looping her arm into Simon's on one side and Alec's on the other. Just as they reached the fair ground, someone coughed behind them.
"Someone said best friend?" a voice asked and they turned around. "Clary!" Alec shouted and the little red-head squealed, running up to him and Alec scooped her up into a tight hug, twirling them around before setting her down. "What are you doing here?" Alec asked her, his face full of surprise and joy. Clary smacked his arm. "Oh, come on. I wasn't going to miss the last concert of the spring semester. I didn't call you back because I knew if I did, I'd blab out that I'm coming. I wanted it to be a surprise. Well, how'd I do?" she said all in one breath. Alec laughed and hugged her again. "Consider me shocked, even." he said and Clary smiled brightly. "Move over, this is not a gay's only event." Isabelle stated, shoving Alec a little to hug Clary. Simon came over, too and waved at her. "Hey, Fray." he said and Clary smiled at them all. Alec scowled at Isabelle, but she didn't notice. She was waving at someone. "I think I see Meliorn. Hey, I'll meet you up front, yeah?" she asked, looking at Clary and she nodded.
When Isabelle sauntered off, Clary put an arm around Alec's back, 'cause that's all she could reach and patted his stomach as they walked. "Well, how has it been without me? You miss me?" she asked, smiling. "Oh, yeah. I am always missing the constant nagging and the height jokes." Alec said sarcastically and Clary laughed. "Not my fault you're a giant." she said but Alec pouted. "Magnus doesn't think so. Take that, you midget." he replied and Clary shoved him. Simon stopped them from messing around. "Come on, we gotta go. Go snog your boyfriend and get on the stage." Simon said, pushing Alec forward where a tan Asian man was waving at him. Simon winked at Alec before he turned to Clary. "Simon, I know what you're planning. I know Jace is here." she said and Simon made a face. "Who told you?" he asked and Clary looked towards the stage, where Maureen, Maia and Jordan were setting the instruments up. Maia waved at Clary, who waved back. She turned to Simon, who rolled his eyes. "Figures." he said and turned to go, but Clary caught his arm.
"I just...Don't be disappointed if this doesn't go your way." she said, a little sadly. Simon huffed in annoyance. "Why does everyone keep thinking that?" he asked, but waved his hand dismissively, when Clary opened her mouth. He leaned down, quickly giving Clary a kiss on the cheek and smiled. "Got to run, you go and do your fangirl job." he said and laughed, running to the stage. "I will!" Clary yelled after him, shaking her head.
Alec came running right after him, his face flushed. "So, how's Magnus? Or more like, how are his lips?" Simon asked, when they got up to the stage. "Shut up." Alec said and turned a little red. Simon laughed and made his way to the center of the stage. Alec moved behind the drums and Simon looked at the rest of them. Jordan gave him a thumbs up from behind the bass, Maureen nodded from the keyboard and Maia smiled at him, clutching at her guitar and moving the mic with one hand. Alec adjusted his mic, too and Simon decided to search the crowd until they were done setting the gear up. The grass was full of students, not a massive amount, but enough. Simon wasn't nervous about that, though. He'd performed millions of times, he no longer got the stage fright. But he was nervous to see a certain face.
When he looked towards the benches, where Clary was sitting with Magnus, who was laying down on one of them, he spotted Jace. He was talking to Clary, laughing and he looked gorgeous. His white linen blouse was loose fitting and his light blue jeans were ripped from the thighs. He had bracelets around his left hand and Simon thought if the one he gave him might still be there. Jace's golden hair glinted in the sunlight, they were slightly longer than the last time he had seen him. Well, not the last time, exactly. They had seen each other just days ago. But a year ago, his hair were much shorter. Suddenly, he looked up at them and his smiled faded a little. But then, Simon smiled at him and Jace's eyes softened. He waved a little and Simon felt his heart jump.
"Hey, is this thing on?" Simon said, knowing he sounded lame, but it made most of the crowd laugh. Simon was pretty known for his lame jokes, sometimes. He adjusted the mic while speaking. "So, you know who we are, we're The Mortal Instruments and today is officially the last day of school!" Simon shouted, making the crowd cheer and most of them raised a cup of something. The jocks in the backround made the most noise. "So, without further ado, let's send this year off with a proper motherfucking good bye and good riddance!" he yelled and the crowd cheered again, when they began an upbeat song. After four songs, Simon nodded to the other's and they adjusted their instruments, Simon put down his guitar and went back to the mic. "So, this last song...goes out to someone very special to me. Hey, don't blame me for using my super famous platform for getting the guy I want, it's a free world." Simon stated and the crowd laughed and a lot of people whooped and whistled. Most of the people in their college knew he was out and they were cool with it, which made this place very dear to Simon.
Jace looked up at him, almost terrified and Simon wanted to laugh so bad. "Alright, let's see if I can get this one right, yeah?" he asked and when the crowd clapped, they began to play. Simon tapped his foot to the beat and closed his eyes. When he sang the first notes, he opened his eyes again, staring right at Jace who seemed dumbfounded.
I'll be your light, your match, your burning sun
I'll be the bright, and black, that's making you run.
And I feel alright, and we'll feel alright,
'Cause we'll work it out, yeah we'll work it out.
Simon sang every word with a meaning, that he knew Jace would get. The blonde shifted on the table that he was sitting on and his eyes carried disbelief. Simon smiled brightly. He moved around the stage and he knew he got the crowd moving with him, cheering him on.
I'll be doin' this, if you ever doubt,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
Clary was looking at Jace and then at Simon, Isabelle had emerged there too, and both girls had a slight look of despair on their faces. Simon didn't care though. He laughed, when he saw Magnus, who whistled for him. Simon looked back at Alec, who rolled his eyes at his boyfriend's gesture. Moving around the stage in hot weather was not easy, considering Simon had chosen tight, skinny black jeans. Luckily, he had a blue tank top on, so he wasn't that hot. He had also let Magnus style him, to which Alec had said 'good luck', and so it was that he had purple stripes in his hair and his nails were painted dark blue. He even liked the look, but he had said no to the glitter, to which Magnus had pouted. But he had put the bracelet on, the one that had an identical twin, and which he hoped Jace was still wearing.
I'll be your ghost, your game, your stadium.
I'll be your fifty thousand clapping like one
And I feel alright, and I feel alright,
'Cause I worked it out, yeah I worked it out.
Simon moved to the edge of the stage, grabbing at the hands of the girls there and they screamed when he touched them. It made Simon smile, not because he liked the attention, but because it was hilarious - they knew he was after a guy and they still tried to hook up with him. If they'd only know what a beautiful man Jace Herondale was...they'd be rooting for him.
Simon eyed Jace again and he saw that the blonde had his eyes glued to him. Simon smirked, raising his ringed hand to go through his hair, messing it up.
I'll be doin' this, if you ever doubt,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
He winked at Jace and saw with satisfaction, that he blushed. Isabelle smirked at Jace and then looked at Simon, shaking her head in disbelief. Simon only raised an eyebrow, as if to say 'see, I told you he'd like it'. Magnus was now on the table with Clary and they were dancing, and Simon saw Alec smiling at them happily.
I got my mind made up and I can't let go.
I'm killing every second 'til it sees my soul.
I'll be running, I'll be running,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
Simon moved to Alec and sat next to him and Alec handed him one drumstick. They played the drums like that, each having one stick but they both knew the beat. The mic attached to the drums helped Simon to continue singing and Alec sang with him. Simon noticed that Magnus was pretty much melting, seeing his boyfriend sing. Simon smirked. It was his idea and Alec had agreed, because Simon knew Magnus had long ago wanted Alec to sing on stage. He owed him, that's for sure. Alec was definitely getting lucky tonight.
Simon threw the drumstick into the air, when he hopped up from behind the drums, and Alec caught it expertly, spinning them around in his hands and Simon was pretty sure a guy in the front of the stage almost fainted. He laughed, before singing the next lines. He felt alive.
And we'll start a fire, and we'll shut it down,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
Jace had stood up now and he was leaning against the table and his hand went to his face. He shook his head, when Simon pointed to him. He definitely blushed, when heads turned to him, realizing that he was the one Simon was singing to, but the brunette didn't feel bad. He was glad, because he wasn't going to let Jace say no to him. He was going to make it impossible.
There's a maniac out in front of me.
Got an angel on my shoulder, and Mephistopheles.
My momma raised me good, momma raised me right.
Momma said "do what you want, say prayers at night"
And I'm saying them, cause I'm so devout.
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out, yeah.
Simon took the mic and danced with it to the edge of the stage. He was lucky in the sense that the mic was wireless and that his friends were not far from the stage, because Clary always said that fangirls have to be in the front lines. Isabelle agreed strongly with this. Simon stepped down, walking towards the table and he could see the panic in Jace's eyes. It made him want to laugh again, but he resisted.
I got my mind made up and I can't let go.
I'm killing every second 'til it sees my soul.
I'll be running, I'll be running,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
He walked to another table, that mostly had the cheerleaders gathered around it and he stepped on it, moving to the top, singing all the while. He then jumped down from it, taking Louisa, who was the captain of the cheerios, by the arm and twirling her, making her giggle. He smiled and let her go, moving to the school's marching band, where he stopped and leaned against his friend Eric, who laughed, shoving him away. Simon smirked and winked at Malcolm, who was another openly gay kid at their school and he blushed furiously at Simon's gesture.
And we'll start a fire, and we'll shut it down,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
Simon was nearing the end of the song, so he took his steps to his friends table. Jace was now looking at him, still with disbelief, but there was a small smile playing on his lips. That gave Simon hope. When he arrived, he first went to Clary and Magnus, who were still on the top of the table, and he twirled around with them, busting geeky dance moves with them and then hopped down, sitting next to Isabelle, who he let sing a couple of lines with him. Isabelle smiled at him, and kissed his cheek when he left her side, making the girls at the front of the stage protest loudly.
Ooh, we all want the same thing.
Ooh, we all run for something.
Oh for God, for fate,
For love, for hate,
For gold, and rust,
For diamonds, and dust.
There was a small instrumental pause when Simon got to Jace. He was standing defiantly, arms crossed, but he was now definitely smiling. Simon tilted his head and stared at him. He stretched out his arms as if indicating the whole event and smiled. "So? How am I doing so far?" he asked over the music, just as Alec and Maia sang the next two lines themselves. Jace shook his head but he looked at Simon with glowing eyes. They were piercingly blue, but the brown was still Simon's favorite. "You're crazy." Jace said, smirking. Simon shrugged. "Crazy about you, maybe." he said, emphasizing the cheezy words. Jace shook his head and Simon turned to run back towards the stage, still singing.
I'll be our light, your match, your burning sun,
I'll be the bright and black that's making you run.
When he got back, he started to clap his hands, making the crowd clap with him and he smiled at his bandmates, who were thoroughly enjoying themselves. Simon liked the way they were all playing, without a care in the world. That's what he wanted for them all, and he was glad he had put this little thing together. Hopefully, they still had a whole year to make some more music and then...we'll see what happens, he thought.
I got my mind made up and I can't let go.
I'm killing every second 'til it sees my soul.
I'll be running, I'll be running,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
And we'll start a fire, and we'll shut it down,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
When Simon approached the end of the song, he attached the mic back to where it belonged. He smiled back at Jace, who was now watching him, with a weird look in his eyes. It wasn't a bad look, but Simon hadn't seen that look in a while. It made him burn up.
I'll be your light, your match, your burning sun,
I'll be the bright and black that's making you run.
And I feel alright, and we'll feel alright,
'Cause we'll work it out, yeah we'll work it out.
And we'll start a fire, and we'll shut it down,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
The crowd went wild and Simon bowed. "On the bass, the magnificent Jordan Kyle!" he yelled, and Jordan waved at the cheering people. "On the keyboard, the wonderful Maureen Brown! On the guitar and with a beautiful singing voice, the lovely Maia Roberts!" Simon shouted out the girls next and he glanced at Jordan, who winked at Maia. She smiled back shyly. "And on the drums, possibly the sexiest man alive, sorry girls he doesn't swing that way and sorry guys he's already taken, the absolute heartthrob, Alec Lightwood!" he shouted out and he heard Magnus whistle very loudly and jumping up and down. He even heard Clary shout 'that's my gay best friend!' and he chuckled. "And I'm Simon Lewis, hopefully leaving here with a certain blonde tonight." he concluded, winking at Jace and the crown erupted into cheers and laughter. "Have a great the rest of your day, thank you!" he ended their performance and they all stood up in a row, taking the last bow.
When they got down, they all made their way to the bench where their friends were. "You were amazing, all of you!" Isabelle yelled, jumping up and down and then hugged Simon. She eyed her brother, who had Magnus practically drooling over him. "Since when do you sing?" she asked, accusingly. "Who cares, I think I may have died and gone to heaven." Magnus replied, putting a hand around Alec's waist and smiling in a way that made Alec blush. Isabelle went to Maureen and started to chat with her, while Clary gave Simon a knowing glance, before moving to Maia and Jordan. Simon stepped towards Jace who eyed him.
"I can't believe you did that." Jace shook his head. Simon went closer to him and noticed Jace didn't back down. "You better believe it." he stated happily and Jace laughed. "Only you, Simon Lewis, would do something I told you that I hated." Jace said, his eyes fixed on Simon's. "Oh, you didn't mean that. What you meant was 'I never ever have gotten a romantic gesture and I desperately need one'." Simon replied smoothly, making Jace glare at him. the blonde came closer and looked up at Simon. "We still have to talk about a year that we kind of lost." Jace stated. Simon nodded. "Well, I'm all for effort, if you are." Simon stated and waited for Jace's response. The blonde looked at him, a smirk playing on his lips. "You are the dorkiest, sweetest, dumbest idiot I've met." he said, closing the gap between them and kissing Simon. The brunette vaguely realized that a lot of people around them were cheering them on, but he was too engulfed by Jace's scent and his hands on Simon's hips.
Jace pulled Simon closer and when he slid his tongue into his mouth and Simon's hand sneaked under Jace's shirt, there was a loud cough. "Hey, hey, keep it PG. We don't want the little adorable fangirls crying their eyes out." Magnus stated, winking at them. Simon pulled back but didn't let go of Jace and he happily noted, that the blonde didn't let him go either. Jace smiled at him. "Thank you." he said and Simon smiled. "Foooor...?" he asked, playing dumb. Jace rolled his eyes, but placed their foreheads together. "For the big romantic gesture." he replied and Simon smiled smugly. "Imagine what you have to do to propose to me." Jace joked but Simon looked wounded. "I thought you were going to propose." he pouted and Jace shoved him away. "What? No way." he answered and Simon laughed. "Don't worry, I can top this any time. I just have to figure out how to get 10 puppies into a flying air balloon." he said and they all laughed, except Isabelle, who glared at him.
"Simon, don't you dare hurt innocent puppies." she said and Simon swung an arm around her. "Don't worry, when I propose, it'll be perfect no matter what I do, even if I do it in my PJ's at my apartment." Simon said and Jace scowled at him. "Oh yeah? How so, Mr. I am so perfect I can do anything?" Clary asked, sitting down next to Isabelle. "Because Jace is the one I'll be proposing to. Since he's perfect, there's hardly anything I have to do anymore." he stated and Magnus did an 'aww' along with Clary and Isabelle. Jace blushed but shoved Simon's shoulder. "You're not getting off that easy, Lewis." he said, but Simon reached towards him, grabbing his arm and pulling Jace against him again. "Whatever you say, babe. Whatever you say." Simon replied and kissed Jace's forehead.
"Idiot." Jace mumbled, but kissed Simon's lips slightly. "I know, but you still like me." Simon replied and Jace shook his head, laughing. "Yeah, I do." he said, and Simon laughed, too, linking their fingers together.
'Til the love runs out.
