Twenty three - in which Simon and Jace wish to rewrite the stars (SH)
Simon Lewis. The head of the New York vampire clan. He was arrogant, unyielding and impossible to have a conversation with, without him making either fun of you or talking down to you. He was also the person Jace was madly in love with.
Jace Herondale. The golden boy of the Herondale family, one of the best shadowhunters of the New York Institute and a hero of the war. He was smug, as brave as he was reckless and he was impossible to come to an agreement with, since he always thought he was right about everything. He was also the person that Simon didn't want to admit meant the most to him in the world.
They both knew that they could never be. A shadowhunter of that importance with a downworlder? No way that was ever going to happen. And so, Simon faked his hate towards the blonde shadowhunter, even though he knew exactly, that Jace could see right through him. At first they were fine, but then Jace started saying things like 'who cares' and 'they can't tell us what to do', and Simon got scared. That Jace would actually want to be with him. It could ruin everything.

Jace was walking along the street, with his seraph blade glowing and the mundanes walking by were oblivious to him. He went down on one knee, inspecting the pool of ichor in a dark alleyway. "Jace? Will you stop running ahead." Alec said, when he caught up with him, slightly out of breath. "Huh? Sorry, I wasn't paying attention." Jace said abruptly, touching the ichor on the ground. Alec scoffed. "You never do. Demon blood?" Alec asked and Jace nodded, looking towards a darker alley. He got up and they made their way over there. When they stepped towards the garbage bins, Alec stopped them, grabbing Jace's arm. "What-" Jace started but Alec nodded towards a slumped figure on the ground.
They slowly advanced. Jace noticed the girl had dirty blonde hair and her hands were covered in weird bruises. Her T-shirt was ripped in some places and there was a cut on her cheek, that looked like a long clawmark. Alec kneeled next to her and touched her neck to find a pulse. "She's dead." he observed but then he thought about it. "Or just knocked out by the demon poison. Look at that." he said and Jace narrowed his eyebrows. The girl had two puncture wounds on her neck, almost healed. His hand went to his own neck subconsciously. "You think she might be a vampire?" he asked, quickly turning his gaze away and Alec shrugged. "I mean, they don't have a pulse, right? And we know that there are some fledlings terrorizing the mundanes near the Central Park." the taller shadowhunter answered and Jace nodded.
He tried waking the girl up. When his hand went to her cheek, it was ice cold, but so was the hand that came up, grabbing his. Her eyelids flew open and she seemed frantic. "What- Who are you?" she asked, suddenly terrified. "It's alright. We're shadowhunters. We'll get you to your clan." Jace tried to soothe her but her eyes kept going around the alley way. "Uh, Jace..." Alec suddenly said, looking up at the roof and Jace followed his gaze. There was a huge spider-like demon coming their way. "Damn it." Jace said, standing up. "Don't move." he said to the girl, who looked at the demon in terror.
"Alec!" Jace yelled and his parabatai drew his bow back, muscles contracting under the pressure and released the arrow. It went right between the demons eyes. Jace ran forward, jumping up at the creature and slashing down in one smooth move, making ichor spill from its center. The demon screeched and was gone. Jace tried to clean his seraph blade while Alec helped the girl up. "What's your name?" he asked and Jace saw the girl shivering, although she wasn't supposed to feel cold. Definitely a fledling. "Sandra. My name's Sandra." she whispered. "Are you...do you know what's happening to you?" Alec asked, hesitant. She sniffled. "Yes. I ran away from home, but I didn't know where to go. I'm a-I don't know how to deal with this." she said, now sobbing and Jace came closer. "Don't worry. I know someone who can help. Let's go." he said and with a nod to Alec, they started their way to Hotel DuMort.

"Nephilim. I don't recall asking you to drop by." Simon's cold voice greeted them and Jace eyed him. He looked good, as usual. He was wearing black jeans and a black T-shirt, because the place wasn't already glum enough without him wearing all black. But his eyes were still a warm brown, when they looked back at Jace. His lips twitched a little, like he was suppressing a smile. Jace smirked. "We found a fledling. Thought you might now how to help her, as it is your duty." he stated, helping Sandra to sit on one of the couches. Simon approached them, glaring at Alec and then at Jace. He chose to address Alec, since he was the head of the Institute for now. "And where did you find her?" he asked and Alec looked back at him, his hands behind his back. "In an alleyway. A demon had attacked her." he replied and Simon tisked.
He went to the girl and kneeled in front of her and touched her cheek, moving a strand of her hair from her face. "And you are, darling?" he asked and Jace wanted to shout at him. "Sandra." she said, now a little more confident and when Simon smiled at her sweetly, she gave a small, hesitant smile back. "Sandra, I am the head of the New York vampire clan. I will help you get your life back on the right track. Don't worry, you're safe with me." he said and set a hand on her shoulder. Jace had the urge to go and slap it off. "Thank you." she said, whispering and stared at Simon in awe. The brunette got up, now turning back to the shadowhunters. "And what are you waiting for? A formal way of showing you the door? You know where it is, be gone, nephilim." he said, his voice full of boredom and Alec rolled his eyes. Jace stared at Simon. "Don't speak to him like that, he's the head of the Institute." he said, his voice arrogant. "Temporary." Simon rolled his eyes, but Jace took a step forward. Alec caught his sleeve. "It's fine, Jace. Let's just go." he said, warning him, but the blonde shook his hands off.
"Do you ever get tired of acting like a complete dickhead?" Jace asked, stepping into Simon's personal space. The brunette's eyes were fixed on him in a cold stare, but Jace could see the little flicker in them behind this facade. "Do you ever get tired of being a whiny little shadowhunter?" Simon retorted. Jace stared up at his face and being this close to him, he felt his hands starting to shake. He wasn't sure if he wanted to grab him and kiss him senseless or he just wanted to punch his stupid face. "Oh, you don't mean that." Jace said, smug, but he was talking in a low voice and finally, he got the reaction he wanted. Simon's cold stare slipped and his pupil's dilated, his right hand went into a fist and it was shaking. Jace smiled. "Bye, vampire." he said and turned to go, releasing the breath he'd been holding.

"You can't just show up and do that Jace." Simon said, pacing on the roof. Jace rolled his eyes, sitting on the edge. "Do what?" he asked and Simon growled. "Come and provoke me like that. You know what happens when you do." he said and Jace shivered a little, thinking about it. He loved to put Simon in the position where he knew he wanted to jump Jace, to consume him, but couldn't because there were other people around. He loved to see Simon try to control himself, and then failing.
"Alec didn't suspect a thing. Besides, why should I hide that I want you." Jace said, his voice clear and cutting through the tension between them. Simon stopped, staring at him. "You can't say things like that, Jace." he said with a defeated look and his voice sounded tired. Jace stood up and came to him. His hands moved animatedly when he talked. "Why the fuck not? Tell me, what's so bad about this?" he asked, his voice rising.
You know I want you
It's not a secret I try to hide
I know you want me
So don't keep saying our hands are tied
"I know that you want this as much as I so don't deny it." Jace said, watching Simon intently. The brunette mumbled something and then looked up at the sky, sighing. "I don't." he said, his voice hollow. "You...don't?" Jace repeated, almost amused. Simon nodded, still looking up. Jace smiled and stepped forward. He moved around Simon, close enough so he could feel his presence. "So what you're saying is...this doesn't affect you...at all?" Jace asked seductively, tracing a hand over Simon's stomach and slipping it under his shirt, where he could let his fingers roam over the abs. He put his lips close to Simon's neck and kissed his collarbone. Simon closed his eyes and Jace smirked. "It's not-We can't-" Simon said, tripping over his words. Jace shook his head, moving his hand around and letting is glide over Simon's skin, that was cold under his touch.
You claim it's not in the cards
Fate is pulling you miles away
And out of reach from me
"Why do you let other people make the rules, Simon? Don't you know, that it's okay to want what you want?" Jace asked, whispering and he leaned in, to place a kiss below Simon's ear. The brunette shifted, it was hard to realize if you affected a vampire or not, since they didn't need to breathe and their hearts didn't beat, but Jace had learned that Simon had a few telltale signs. His fingers twitched when he got excited. His eyes turned slightly darker, when he felt lust. He bit the inside of his cheek, when he was trying to hold himself back. And he did all these things, right now, when Jace was leaning in to kiss him.
But you're here in my heart
So who can stop me if I decide
That you're my destiny?
"I can't take it. Being around you, pretending I don't care, when I do. Let me be with you." Jace said against Simon's skin and he groaned. Jace's lips were on his now, and Simon felt him seeking entrance with his tongue. Reluctantly he let him in, because he could never say no to his shadowhunter. He sighed when Jace put his hands on Simon's hips and guided them backwards, so he could trap Simon against a wall.
What if we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine
Nothing could keep us apart
You'd be the one I was meant to find
Jace's hands were all over him and Simon felt a warm desire consume him, every time Jace said his name. Every time he was a little closer to falling, to saying 'yes'. Jace pushed against him and Simon could feel his fangs trying to snap out. He growled and flipped them, so Jace was against the wall and Simon held his arms strongly, not caring if it hurt. His face was clouded with lust and anger, both, and Jace laughed, looking up at the sky. "You are such a bad liar." he stated and Simon shook his head. "Jace, this is not a game. It's serious." Simon said and Jace rolled his eyes. "That's what I've been trying to tell you. You just won't listen." he replied and reached up to kiss Simon, but he pulled back, not letting him.
It's up to you, and it's up to me
No one can say what we get to be
So why don't we rewrite the stars?
Maybe the world could be ours
Tonight
"Stop being so arrogant. And stop flirting with me." Simon said, still holding his arms. "I wasn't." Jace said smugly, but his eyes were bright and shining. He pulled his arms free and pulled Simon towards him, kissing his neck and Simon felt their bodies creating a sweet friction between them. He groaned and hid his face in the crook of the blonde's neck, holding himself back. "Jace, stop." Simon said, his voice weak and not at all commanding. "Simon, you know you want to. Just let me do this." the shadowhunter said and Simon felt his fangs snap out. Jace moved his neck a little, letting Simon bite down on him.
You think it's easy
You think I don't want to run to you
But there are mountains
And there are doors that we can't walk through
Jace let out a suppressed moan, clinging to Simon, when he drank from him and he felt the lust cloud his mind. He wanted Simon, so bad, and he didn't see it. He wanted all of him and Simon found excuses to stop him from getting what he wanted. Simon pulled back and watched Jace, who crashed their lips together and Jace licked the blood off Simon's lower lip. The vampire moaned into the kiss and Jace smirked. He had Simon where he wanted him. But there was just one catch.
I know you're wondering why
Because we're able to be
Just you and me
Within these walls
He pulled back, separating them and Simon protested. Jace smiled at him. "Why are you so reluctant to try this?" Jace asked, still feeling Simon's venom clouding his mind. Simon shook his head in despair. "Jace, if they find out, they could strip you of your runes, or throw you out and I...I care about you too much, to let that happen." he said but Jace leaned back, watching him. "I don't care. I don't care about being a shadowhunter, I care about you." he stated and Simon looked terrified. "You don't mean that, Jace. I could never do that to you, could never risk it. It's who you are, I would never take that from you." he said, now soft and sweet, placing his hand on Simon's cheek.
But when we go outside
You're going to wake up and see that it was hopeless after all
"I wish that we could change everything. That we could make new rules and that people would see that it's okay to love whoever you want to love." Jace said and Simon looked at him, startled. The blonde immediately clasped his mouth with his hand. "You...love me?" Simon asked, almost scared of the answer. Jace lowered his hand and then nodded slowly. "I didn't mean to say it like that. I mean, I know you don't-" he said but Simon was already fuming. "Jace, you can't just say that! Why would you say that!" he sounded desperate and angry and Jace looked at him in fear. He felt tears pricking his eyes but he held them back.
No one can rewrite the stars
How can you say you'll be mine?
Everything keeps us apart
And I'm not the one you were meant to find
Simon put his hands to his face, rubbing it tiredly and Jace's face fell. "Look. Never mind what I said. Just, never mind." he said with a hollow voice and then turned to leave, but Simon grabbed him. "What are you doing? Get back here, you moron." Simon said and Jace stared at him angrily. "What do you want?" he asked, now getting furious but Simon gave him a strange look. "You, you stupid nephilim." he said and pulled Jace into his embrace, kissing him softly, making Jace's head spin.
It's not up to you
It's not up to me
When everyone tells us what we can be
How can we rewrite the stars?
Say that the world can be ours
Tonight
Jace's mind was going a million miles and hour when Simon attacked him with his lips, pressing them together and lifting Jace up against the wall so he was straddling Simon. He grazed his fangs along Jace's jawline and the blonde whimpered. He wanted to plead, beg, do anything but his breath caught in his throat when Simon set him down and kneeled in front of him and lifted his shirt, kissing his stomach and slipping his fingers into the waistband of his jeans.
All I want is to fly with you
All I want is to fall with you
So just give me all of you
Simon did things to him that made him forget every worry he had ever had. The effect he had on him was unmistakably destructive, he could bring him down and then build him back up again, only to knock him on the ground again. And he didn't want it to ever stop. When Simon came back up to his face, Jace breathed hard, wanting to feel Simon against him, their skin connected. Simon gasped when Jace's hands went under his shirt, lifting it up, but Jace swallowed the sound with his own lips.
It feels impossible (it's not impossible)
Is it impossible?
Say that it's possible
They kissed and kissed, and Jace didn't know how long it had been but his lips were raw and the puncture wounds on his neck were slightly tingling, and Simon's face was beautiful when the moonlight shone on it. His eyes were dark, darker than before, and he slid his thumb across Jace's lower lip. The blonde closed his eyes. "So what happens now?" Jace asked, not sure if he wanted to know the answer.
How do we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine?
Nothing can keep us apart
'Cause you are the one I was meant to find
"I wish I could tell you. But I can't." Simon said, his voice just a little sad. Jace's eyes searched his, and Simon rested his forehead on Jace's. He looked absolutely dishevelled, his shirt crumpled up in Jace's hands and his hair a mess. Jace breathed out, feeling Simon's strong arms around him. "You know what I want. If you tell me that you want the same, if you mean what you said earlier...Then I say, we change the rules. I just need you, that's all that matters." Jace said and Simon opened his eyes, staring at him in disbelief. "Of course I meant it." he only said, but he didn't back away. He was still holding Jace, his hands immobile and ready to catch him if he'd fall. But it was too late for that. For both of them.
It's up to you
And it's up to me
No one can say what we get to be
And why don't we rewrite the stars?
Changing the world to be ours
Jace didn't say it and neither did Simon, but they were both thinking the same thing. This will end in heartbreak. But they didn't admit it, at least letting the illusion stand for a while. This won't be the last time that they did this, imagining a better world, where they didn't need to look for ways to be together.
You know I want you
It's not a secret I try to hide
The stars were out, and the night turned cold as they stood on the roof and Jace's breath turned into steam between them, his hands were as cold as Simon's now but he didn't care to activate a rune to help with it. His forehead was pressed against Simon's and he felt immense sorrow. Simon opened his eyes and with one last kiss on Jace's forehead, he whispered 'I love you' and left, leaving Jace standing, until Simon was out of sight, and then the blonde crumbled to the ground, letting the crisp night air wrap around him.
But I can't have you
We're bound to break and my hands are tied
