Twenty nine - in which there's no time to die (SH)

A/N: Thank you for this recommendation, sweet and lovely parabatai,

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I've got your back, always. Okay?"

Jace tried not to think of the words echoing in his mind, when he was lying in this pool of blood, surrounded by nothing but a dark cell. The only source of light was a thin ray of sunshine, that peeked through the small window with bars. It was so high up that the small excuse of a cell didn't really get much from the lonely, gleaming ray of light, but it told Jace that it was not nighttime. Which meant that no one would be coming here, at least for a few hours. He let his head hit the back of the wall, wincing as he adjusted his position. The shackles didn't hurt his hands anymore, but the wound in his abdomen kept bleeding. He wondered how long they were going to let him bleed. He wished he could just bleed to death, that would be a relief to them and at the same time, they wouldn't get anything out of him. He felt weaker already, scared of what he might say, when they came back with the blades and the magic.

He kept replaying everything in his head, realizing how he had been mistaken. But that didn't mean he was smarter now. He was still as stupid as he was then, because even though he felt betrayed, he felt like he wouldn't have done anything differently, and that's saying something. He felt a bitter taste in his mouth that he couldn't get rid of and his mind was foggy and veiled, like someone had put a blanket over him, suffocating him, making it hard to breathe or even hear his own miserable and lonely thoughts.

I should've known
I'd leave alone
Just goes to show
That the blood you bleed
Is just the blood you owe

When he replayed the scene over in his head, he couldn't help but feel the sting in his chest. Even though it had happened so fast, even then, Jace had known. The look in those brown eyes told him everything he needed to know. The trap was set long ago, and all he had to do was fall into it. And Jace fell, fast and hard, even though everyone told him it was a mistake.

He jumped up to the wall, to get a better look at the surrounding chaos when Alec's arrow whizzed past his head, hitting a circle member, leaving the demon on top of it to stare in confusion and Jace threw an arrow into the demon's core. His eyes searched for his parabatai, who rushed to his side, hopping next to him in one swift move. "Nice shot." Jace commented, looking for a flash of red hair. Clary was still missing. "I can't find her." the blonde said, annoyed and Alec nodded. "I know, Magnus went ahead and is tracking her now, we just have to hold on a little longer." the older boy replied, letting another arrow loose and nocking another one with a blink of an eye. Jace nodded, now scanning the crowd of fighting Circle members, demons and shadowhunters, who were in Idris when Valentine attacked.

Jace's eyes stopped at the vampire, who had just knocked out a circle member and their eyes met. Simon smiled to him slightly, nodding with his head into the direction of the Conference Hall and Jace nodded back. "Hold the fort for me? I have to find out where Valentine is." Jace asked and Alec seemed to hesitate. His eyes went to Simon and then Jace. "I know he's been here for a while now and you trust him, but don't you think it's just a little suspicious, that just a few months after he turned sides, Valentine manages to sneak past our wards and attack?" his parabatai questioned and Jace rolled his eyes. He looked back at Simon, who was in the midst of the chaos, all blurred lines from his vamp speed and he looked like he was thoroughly enjoying himself. He smiled smugly to Jace who felt his heart beat faster. Adrenaline was still pumping through his veins, but Simon's eyes that stared at him with intensity like no other, made his breath quicken. "I trust him." Jace simply said and after a second of silence, Alec nodded. "I trust you, brother." he said, offering Jace a hand and the blonde took it, like they were about to speak the vow again. He smiled to Alec and nodded curtly. "See you on the other side." Jace said jokingly and Alec scowled. "And be careful, Jace." he stressed and the blonde chuckled when they both hopped down. "I always am." he announced, before they parted, Alec running towards the blue light he had just spotted and Jace running to the only thing he should've ran away from - the vampire who was waiting for him, leaning on the pillar like they were not in fact fighting for life and death.

There was a scratching sound outside and Jace looked up. He saw something flutter behind the bars and heard a crow. He smiled. At least he had some company. He stared up at the bird who was sitting outside the cell, on a ledge outside the small opening. Jace felt the warmth of the blood seeping through his shirt, but he couldn't do anything. He just hoped Alec was in a better state than he was. At least, he couldn't feel any of Alec's pain, so he must've been safe. Jace only felt his own pain. Then again, that must've hurt Alec just as bad. So stupid, Jace thought. But never learning from his mistakes.

We were a pair
But I saw you there
Too much to bear
You were my life
But life is far away from fair

When he moved his arm, he realized his shoulder was dislocated. Simon really did a number on him. He laughed out loud at the irony, his voice gravelly and echoing back from the walls, before he fell into a fit of coughing, the bloodflow getting stronger because of it and he winced again in pain. It hurt so bad. He never knew that a slash across the stomach would hurt this bad. He always had his iratzes. Now, he had nothing.

The moment it happened, Jace realized what was going on. He saw Valentine on the far end of the room, holding Clary by her arm and she seemed to drift out of consciousness, her voice so weak when she called for Jace. The blonde felt the cold touch on his skin, when Simon grabbed his arm and even though he yelled 'what are you doing!?' he already knew what was happening. He saw the wicked smile on Valentine's face and saw that the room was empty apart from them, and heard the door click shut behind him, but it still hurt, so bad. Not just physically, because when Simon hit him at the back of his knees, forcing him onto the ground and knocked his head on the floor, making him almost black out, he felt so betrayed. He groaned loudly, feeling Simon twist his arm and he heard a crack, as Simon pushed him further onto the ground. He screamed out in pain and to his surprise he saw the vampire flinch at the sound. "I'm so sorry for this." he whispered suddenly, when Jace felt the cold floor under him and saw Simon's face hovering over his, so low that no one else could see or hear him. Jace winced and gritted his teeth. "No, you're not." he spat out and Simon's face betrayed hurt, but Jace didn't care. It was over, he knew it then and he couldn't even fathom why Simon would bother to apologize.

He looked up to see Valentine stepping towards them and Clary lay unconscious on the floor. Her red hair looked like blood around her, the pale skin so white that Jace was pretty sure she could be dead already. "My long lost son, finally here. Thank you, Simon." Valentine mentioned and heaved Jace up, making the blonde tighten his jaw so he wouldn't scream out in pain because of his shoulder. Simon's face looked angry. "I did what you wanted, now let her go." he said suddenly, making Jace eye him suspiciously. Valentine didn't seem to pay no mind to him, staring at Jace and taking out his blade. "I wish I could end your sufferings, sadly I need you for the Soulsword. But, just so you won't have any strength to escape..." the man said and, with an evil smirk, he slashed his blade across Jace's stomach, and the blonde did scream out in agony, almost missing the pained expression on Simon's face. He was pretty sure he imagined the brunette rushing to him, as he fell to the ground and was swallowed by darkness.

Jace never knew how he was going to die, nobody did, but he would've liked to die on the battlefield. Surrounded by his fellow shadowhunters, his parabatai and his sister. He would've liked to be able to stand, at least. Right now, he could do nothing but wait, in this pitiful cell. Simon's face just wouldn't go away from his mind, as his brain started to conjure weird images in front of him.

Was I stupid to love you?
Was I reckless to help?
Was it obvious to everybody else

He shifted a little, looking at the far corner of the cell. "You know I did it for a reason, right?" Simon asked him, his legs sprawled out on the floor as he gave Jace an amused smile. The blonde shivered, feeling very cold all of a sudden, and shook his head. "No. You are not real." he said out loud, closed his eyes and reopened them, but Simon was still there. He looked perfect as always, not a cut on him. Vampires did heal quickly. No, he wasn't here, Jace reminded himself. "Oh come on, of course I am. I wouldn't just leave you to die, would I? I've got your back, remember?" the vampire retorted and observed his nails, like they were really interesting. Then he let his hand go through his hair, messing it up, and he smiled at Jace. "I did it for a reason, so there's really no need to beat yourself up. You trusted me, and you were right to." Simon said then, his eyebrow going up, but the smile on his face was so unlike him. Jace shook his head again and felt it pounding. His ears had started to ring.

"That's bullshit." he managed to say, but his breathing was now a lot heavier than before. He held his hand on his wound, pressing harder, but knew it wouldn't be of any use. Simon suddenly got up and sauntered to him, which only took a few steps, because of the small space. He crouched next to Jace, still smiling like this was the funniest thing he had ever seen. "You fell for me, Jace, admit it. You'll feel better." the brunette said and Jace felt the need to shout. He would've, if he'd have the strength. "Just go away, please." he begged, not knowing what else to do. The pain was unbearable now.

That I'd fallen for a lie?
You were never on my side
Fool me once, fool me twice
Are you death or paradise?
Now you'll never see me cry
There's just no time to die

"Oh no, you're not getting rid of me. Not until you admit your feelings. That's why this hurts so much, isn't it? Because you actually let yourself care, so this makes it ten times worse." Simon now stated, like he was observing a fact and Jace gave him a glare. "Fuck. Off." he huffed and the vampire laughed. His movements seemed very hazy and his outline started to blur for Jace. He almost felt Simon's hand on his and he muttered 'this isn't real' under his breath for at least million times. "Jace, just say it." Simon whispered and Jace felt a sharp pain in his chest. "Fine! I did! I let you in, and I regret that I did!" Jace shouted now. He looked up and suddenly, Simon wasn't next to him, but he was at the door, his hand on the hard wood. He looked stricken. "No, you don't." he said and when Jace blinked, Simon was gone. He was alone. "Fuck." Jace cursed, letting his head fall back again. He wished someone would just come and kill him.

I let it burn
You're no longer my concern
Faces from my past return
Another lesson yet to learn

He knew what Alec would say right about now. That he can't quit. That he wasn't living just for himself, but for others, too. But right now it was just so damn hard, trying to stay awake, not even knowing for what? For more pain? For more disappointment? He didn't know and he couldn't care less. He just wished that it was over.

When the door did finally open, Jace felt like it was a dream, just like everything else. He hoped it was, because it wasn't Valentine who came through the door. That would've been better. Simon approached him in a haste and Jace wished that it would be anyone but him. "Jace." Simon said, when he fell down on his knees next to him, and Jace could hear the concern in his voice. His eyes shot open as he stared at the brown eyes and Simon looked at him, his features soft and not a trace of roughness from before. "Am I dreaming?" Jace asked, not even caring what he sounded like. Simon smiled at him. "No, I'm here. And I'm getting you out." he said quickly, removing the shackles by just tearing them to pieces with his strength. Jace didn't feel like moving. It felt really good just lying there, even the pain was fading.

"Jace, I am sorry, for everything. But I just need you to come with me now, you can trust me." Simon said and Jace laughed. He laughed almost hysterically, feeling his chest burn as he did. Simon's face was a mask of confusion. Jace pointed a finger at him and his hair fell onto his forehead. "Trust...you? That's rich." he drawled out, feeling his speech getting slurred. Oh, it would be so nice to just fall asleep, right here. "Jace, I know what you're thinking. Please, I want to help you. I need to help you." Simon was now saying. "Don't go, not yet. You've got so much more to live for." he heard Simon say then, and he almost chuckled, if it hadn't hurt so much. He felt himself being lifted up and then he was floating. Jace felt like air and he smiled. When he opened his eyes briefly, he saw Simon's face, looking forward and he couldn't see his eyes clearly, but he was still beautiful to him.

That I'd fallen for a lie
You were never on my side
Fool me once, fool me twice
Are you death or paradise?
Now you'll never see me cry
There's just no time to die

"Stay with me, Jace, stay with me." Simon repeated, until Jace could only make out a slur of words. He welcomed the serenity with open arms, when he felt like floating between worlds. Who knew death was so nice?

He felt a sharp pain suddenly, in his stomach, and his eyes fluttered open. No, he didn't like this. The pain had just went away. He looked down and saw Simon, holding a stele, no, he was forcing it in Jace's hand and then moving the blonde's hand with his. Right, 'cause downworlders can't draw runes, Jace thought absentmindedly. He felt his wound contract, but his shoulder still hurt like hell. Simon eyed him and then stood up, pulling Jace with him. When the blonde looked around, he could see the courtyard and the small door that let out of it and into the yard. "Jace, I need to get your shoulder back in its place, okay?" Simon was saying and Jace didn't understand any of what was going on, but he nodded. Before he could think any further, he felt a tug, heard a crack and let out a yelp as Simon popped his shoulder back. "You could've counted to three." he mumbled, now thinking more clearly. Maybe it had been the sharp pain that sobered him, or maybe the iratzes, or maybe the fact that Simon had saved him.

He stared at the brunette, who looked guilty as ever, and he felt a rage build in him. "You...You betrayed me! Us!" he yelled and started to lunge forward but Simon stopped him quickly, since Jace didn't even have a weapon on him. He held Jace's hands to his back, careful not to dislocate anything again, and Jace could feel his breath down on his neck. "He had my mom. Valentine had my mom. But he killed her anyway, so there's really no excuse for what I did." he said and Jace stopped struggling. His eyes went wide and Simon turned him around. There faces were very close to each other.

No time to die
No time to die

"Listen, it's not your time yet, you hear me? Go. Clary is safe and so are the others. He only wanted you, but he won't have you, I'll see to it." Simon was saying, his words coming out of his mouth quickly and his eyes scanned the area at the same time. Jace felt so many things. He was hurt, betrayed, the pain was now subsiding in his abdomen but grew in his chest and heart. "Come with me." he said suddenly, his voice pleading and he couldn't believe what he was saying. Simon stopped and watched him carefully. His eyes were soft now. "After everything I've done? No, Jace. I'm staying here." Simon replied and very slowly, he let Jace go, so he could put a hand on Jace's arm. "He'll kill you." Jace whispered, surprised that they were having this conversation. He shouldn't care.

"Then I've deserved it." Simon said a little sadly, but smiled when he let his hand go up to Jace's cheek. The blonde closed his eyes at the touch. "No." he said. Nothing else, just that, but it was firm and the kind that expected no argument. Unfortunately, Simon loved arguing with him. "Jace, listen to me. It wasn't all...I didn't have to pretend with you. I came on your side, because Valentine threatened to kill my mom, I had no choice. Well I did, but I just those the better of the two worsts. But I never pretended with you. Everything I felt for you was real. It still is." the vampire said and Jace felt his throat tighten as tears wanted to form in his eyes. Blinking fast he looked up at Simon. His face was tired, but looked sweetly down at him. Jace stepped closer, putting his arms to Simon's neck, firmly holding onto him and he felt his presence more than ever. "I am not leaving you to die." Jace said but Simon just smiled.

Fool me once, fool me twice
Are you death or paradise?
Now you'll never see me cry

"You are the best thing that ever happened to me. I am sorry, for everything. But there's nothing we can do to fix it now." Simon said and leaned down. Jace felt the tears flowing down his cheeks when Simon kissed him. It was their first time kissing and with a sting in his chest, Jace knew it was the last. It was so sweet, yet urgent, the way Simon's lips moved against his made everything fade out for a while, his heart wouldn't stop pounding and his chest hurt from all that he was feeling. He gripped onto Simon like he was a lifeline, but when the vampire pulled back, he removed Jace's hands from himself. He stepped back and Jace shook his head again. "Go." Simon said, when they could hear voices coming from around the corner of the building. Jace shook his head again, but Simon was so fast, he couldn't have anticipated it, especially in his weakened state.

Suddenly, he was pushed outside the small, stone door and it closed behind him and he screamed for Simon to come with him, because even if it wasn't Jace's time yet, it wasn't Simon's either. The tears wouldn't stop as he fell down, his heart painfully beating in his chest, like it wanted to be ripped out. He could hear the screams on the other side and he closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. When he stood up, he looked straight ahead, where he could see the sun go down over the ruins of Idris and he walked. Stumbling down the road, he didn't look back. He knew if he did, it would only hurt more.

There's just no time to die

A/N: I made it sad. But It's kind of a sad song, so you can't really blame me. I AM SORRY THOUGH, FORGIVE ME. Alright, I'm out. Kisses xx
