Twenty four - in which the stars shine for Jace (AU)

Simon had it all figured out. And then it all went to hell. The weather was supposed to be sunny, but it started raining in the early hours of the morning and it hadn't stopped yet. His old guitar chose this day to give up on him and one of the strings snapped. Clary had just called him, telling him that she couldn't go to distract Jace because she was called back to work, and Alec and Isabelle were out with Magnus. Jace had planned to stay in with Simon all day, so it didn't even matter now. On top of that, the coffee machine broke. And Simon needed his morning coffee.

"I can't believe this. What the hell am I going to do?" Simon asked, holding his phone to his ear between his face and his shoulder, trying to balance the plate of sandwiches in his hand. Jace was still asleep, the least he could do was to bring him breakfast in bed. He put the plate on the tray along with pancakes. "I don't know Si, but maybe you don't need to do all that...you could just, you know, do it at home. It'll be sweet." Clary said on the other end of the phone, and Simon could hear the clinking of cups and plates, as she was working at the cafe. "That's not at all how I planned it." Simon grumbled, putting the instant coffee on the tray as well. "I know, Simon. But Jace will love it, anyway you do it. He loves you." Clary stated softly and Simon let out a sigh. "Right. Well, thanks anyways, Fray." he said and hung up as Clary said goodbye.

He picked up the tray with two hands and walked towards their bedroom. He opened the door quietly, seeing Jace sprawled out on the bed, the blanket on his lower half. He smiled, looking at the beautiful boy. He set the tray down on the bedside table and sat on the edge of the bed. Jace stirred a little and turned towards him, eyes still closed but his hands wrapped around Simon's waist. The brunette smiled as he brushed Jace's hair out of his face so he could get a proper look at it. He was blissful, the soft features of his face like a piece of art, his lip slightly parted and his breathing steady. When Simon leaned in to kiss his temple, Jace nuzzled closer, his arms tighter around his boyfriend. He mumbled something and Simon chuckled a little. Maybe it was okay that it was raining and that he couldn't do all of it how he planned it. After all, Jace was anything but planned - he came into his life as unexpectedly as he had risen to fame with his composed songs.

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah they were all yellow

"Morning, angel." Simon said softly and put his hands around Jace, hugging him while he still had his eyes closed. "Si? What are you doing, come back to bed." Jace mumbled and Simon smiled. "Nope. It's way too late and besides, I made you breakfast." Simon stated, pulling back and looking at Jace who had now opened his eyes. They looked full of sleep but lit up as soon as they met Simon's eyes. The beautiful blue combined with brown was breathtaking. Even without the morning sun they were so clear and shone so bright that Simon was physically in pain.

Jace groaned, but Simon chuckled and the blonde pulled himself upright, so he sat leaning against the headboard. His eyes were studying Simon and then the tray. "What's the occasion? What did you do?" Jace asked, suspicious, and Simon snorted. "What the hell? I just wanted to wake you up with breakfast in bed. Doesn't mean I did anything wrong." he replied, glaring at him. "Simon, last time you did this, you had crashed my bike." Jace said, but a smile was playing on his lips. Simon rolled his eyes. "Eat your pancakes, Herondale." he said, smacking Jace's arm and making him laugh softly. His hair fell to his face in a messy way and Simon stared as he reached for the tray, the muscles on his arms contracting deliciously.

I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called "Yellow"

"The coffee machine finally gave in and is now officially broken. So that's instant coffee." Simon stated sadly. Jace shook his head, looking at Simon lovingly. "Babe, this is perfect. You are too good to be true." he said, kissing Simon's cheek before he tucked in. He took a piece of pancake, dipped it in jam and then guided it to Simon's mouth, who took it, closing his eyes. "I am a master of these." he mumbled, pleased and Jace nodded enthusiastically, as he chewed. "I'm in heaven." he stated, letting out an appreciative moan. Simon laughed, watching him. He loved this man so much.

So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow

"Remember when you finally made your move and I was completely oblivious to the fact that you actually liked me? I had already given up and then there you were, asking me out on a date, stumbling over your words and blushing like crazy." Simon asked, leaning against the bedpost and putting his legs under the blanket, tangling them with Jace's naked ones. The blonde rolled his eyes. "Hey, I didn't not blush that much. And my words were coherent." he said, but Simon eyed him. "Angel, your exact words were 'Would you out my eat date?' instead of 'Would you go out to eat with me'." he said, trying not to laugh and remained professional. Jace's face looked hurt and Simon winked at him. "It worked, didn't it? I got the guy." Jace replied cockily, sipping the coffee. "Yes, you did." Simon said and watched as Jace's throat moved as he swallowed.

"That was almost...3 years ago." Jace said, mulling it over. Simon nodded. "Yep, 3 years next month." he replied and smiled at the blonde, who smiled back dreamily. "Best day of my life. Even though I didn't kiss you." Jace said and put the tray away, patting the spot next to him, where Simon crawled, snuggling into him. The raindrops kept trickling on the window and it was soothing - they both loved the sound. "I wanted you to." Simon said and Jace nodded. "I know." he replied and kissed Simon's cheek. The brunette smiled. It didn't matter now, anyways.

Your skin
Oh yeah, your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know, you know I love you so
You know I love you so

Simon let his hand go up and down Jace's arm, stroking it and caressing his skin. It was soft but at the same time, firm. He pulled the blanket up and cuddled close to his boyfriend, who let out a protesting sound. "What?" Simon asked and Jace glared at him accusingly. "If you're going to stay, you at least have to take off your shirt." he said, crossing his arms and Simon laughed. He pulled the shirt over his head, tossing it aside and put his arms around Jace. "Better?" he asked and the blonde sighed happily, letting his one hand rest on Simon's stomach. "And I will always stay, angel." Simon softly said and pecked his lips. Jace smiled and let his head rest on Simon's shoulder.

I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do
'Cause you were all yellow

Jace's hair were golden and sometimes, his eyes would glow golden in the sun, too. It much reminded Simon of stars, shining in the sky. Scattered in the dark heavens and Jace looked like he would belong there. An angel, looking down on others, beautiful and sweet, with the purest of hearts. Simon couldn't say he loved everything about Jace. He was a firm believer of the fact that you can't truly love everything another person does. Like when Jace left his clothes on the bathroom floor. Or when he turned the TV channel without asking Simon if he was watching it. Or when he said he'd make dinner but then he didn't and Simon ended up making it himself. But the thing was, that Simon accepted him, just as he was. He didn't love these things, but he knew that that's who Jace was and some things he did, were a real pain in the ass - but he was Simon's pain in the ass and he loved him. There were so many things about Jace, that he adored. The things that annoyed him were nothing compared to the things he loved.

Like when Jace tried telling him a terrible joke and then couldn't finish because he was laughing so hard, he had to stop and gasp for air. Or when he called Simon 'babe' in front of strangers, so everyone would know he was Jace's. He loved when Jace spontaneously kissed him, leaving him breathless and then walked away as if he hadn't done anything out of the ordinary, leaving Simon always wanting more. He loved it when Jace took him out on long drives, when he knew Simon was in a bad mood. Sometimes, he didn't even push him to talk, they'd just drive, and Simon was grateful for it. Other times, Jace would guide him to the bed, set them on it and under the blanket, held him close and ordered him to talk, until the night fell on them and they fell asleep from exhaustion. And he loved it when Jace told him he loved him, even when Simon was being a jerk. It helped to remind him, that Jace wasn't his enemy. They were in this together and nothing would change that.

I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh what a thing to do
And it was all yellow

They ended up staying in bed all day. They cuddled and did other things that Simon wouldn't like to admit, because he was pretty sure most of the times, the neighbors would have already called the police if the walls were any thinner. Gladly, they weren't. When it was noon, Jace got up and made them mac n' cheese. Simon loved Jace's cooking, they were both good at it, but the blonde was learning to be a chef, and whenever he could, Simon would let him cook. Good practice, plus Simon got a five star meal out of it. He wanted to cook himself today, but Jace refused. "You got me breakfast, let me do this, babe." he said and off he went. Simon watched from the bar stool as Jace cooked, humming and gliding around the kitchen in his sweats. They didn't bother to put their shirts on, they were going to go back to bed anyways.

When they finished eating, Simon grew nervous. He kept thinking about how to approach his dilemma. He stared at Jace, who was washing the dishes, singing a line of 'Hey, Delilah'. He smiled, all worry leaving his heart. It didn't matter, just like Clary said. It was Jace, and he loved Simon. And that was all he needed.

Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know
For you I'd bleed myself dry
For you I'd bleed myself dry

There was nothing Simon wouldn't do for Jace. Granted, he had even gone to jail once, because of Jace, but that was a complete misunderstanding. And they had the greatest make-up sex afterwards so it was all water under the bridge. Simon felt his cheeks flush when he stood from the bed and padded to the living room, facing the window, and Jace followed him, the blonde's arms sneaking around him, pressing their bodies together. "Simon..." he said, his voice like silk and Simon felt a tickle at his ear as Jace pressed his lips to it, biting down a little.

Jace's actions sent shivers down his spine, making his head spin. Even after 3 years, Jace could still make his knees go weak. "It stopped raining." Simon commented weakly. Jace raised his head, watching at the window over Simon's shoulder. "Mhmm. Did you want to go out?" he asked and Simon shook his head. Then he turned and looked at the love of his life. "Actually, yes. But not like 'out, out'. Let's go to the roof, the sky is clearing up and we could see the stars." he said and Jace's smile grew. "I'll get the blankets." he said, kissing Simon hurriedly and the brunette smiled. "And I'll get the wine." he replied, moving to the cupboard. When Jace was out of sight, he reached to the back of the cabinet for a wooden box that he had old letters inside, and exchange between his mum and dad back in the day. He opened it and looked around for the little black velvet box. He put it in his pocket, his heart pounding. He willed it to slow down.

It's true
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for

When they got to the roof, the found the old lounging chairs hidden under the roof so they would stay dry in days like this and they put the blankets on them. They sat down and Simon poured Jace a glass and he took it. Smiling at him, Jace toasted. "To another perfect day with my beautiful boyfriend." he stated and Simon rolled his eyes, smiling. "You're unbelievably cheesy." he replied, but clinked his glass together with Jace's.

After a while, Simon found himself on top of Jace, straddling him and making out with him, his own chair forgotten, while the stars shone over them, more and more of them appearing by the minute. He pulled back, gasping for air and Jace's eyes reflected the sky. "You take my breath away. Literally. What did I do to deserve you?" Simon said and Jace pulled him down again, kissing him like it was the only thing he wanted to do for the rest of his life.

But Simon pulled back again and stared at Jace, who smiled back. "What?" he asked, his face happy and satisfied and Simon swallowed. He wanted to do this now. There was no better time. "Jace, I need to say something to you." he stated and Jace's face was confused. before he could ask anything, Simon took his hands into his and smiled nervously.

Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine

"It's been almost three years, and it's cheesy to say, but I knew back then, that I wanted to be with you, for the rest of my life. You literally sweeped me off my feet and every day I think about it. How I thought I didn't deserve you. How you have made my life so much more meaningful and how much you care for me and I for you. We both have had our lows but together we made it to the high parts as well. I get to love you, and that's the greatest feeling in the world, besides the feeling that you love me back. So, Jace Herondale, will you marry me?" he said, his voice clear in the night and he didn't even falter once because he was only speaking truths and nothing else. He had taken out the small box and still straddling Jace, he held the open box out to him.

Jace watched him the whole time, stunned, but when Simon pulled out the box, a tear made its way down his cheek. "Simon..." he gasped and stared at the golden ring. He leaned up and kissed Simon, with all the love he had for him and between the kisses Simon could hear him softly whisper 'Yes'. And he's heart leaped, he couldn't stop smiling.

When they finally broke apart, Simon set their foreheads together and took Jace's hand, slipping the ring on his finger. "I love you, angel." he said and Jace's eyes stopped on his, the tears making them shine even more. "I love you, too." he replied. All the stars in the sky combined didn't shine as bright as his Jace did, never as bright as their love did and when he kissed Jace again, he saw golden sparks behind his closed eyelids. The stars might have shone for Jace but Jace shone for Simon, and he always would.

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do
