Thirty two - in which Simon and Jace are under pink skies (AU)
10 years. 10 years worth of friendship and Simon felt he could almost cry, seeing Jace boarding the plane. The blonde was hugging Clary, smiling towards Simon over his shoulder and the brunette smiled back, his own eyes tearing up a little. He took a huge breath and tried scolding himself into being a normal best friend.
"Get it together, Lewis." Jace said, his thick British accent making the words sound lazy almost, and he approached Simon, embracing him in his strong arms. Simon inhaled Jace's scent - the familiar sweet odor of peach and a wiff of peppermint - and smiled into his sweater. "Aww, Simon's gonna miss his boyfriend." Magnus cooed from the back, but before Simon could retort, he heard a grunt and Magnus yelped 'hey!', signaling that Alec had shoved him in the ribs with his elbow. Simon let go of Jace, glaring at the tall glittery boy, who was staring at his boyfriend in betrayal. "That's what you get, Mags. Alec is always on my side." Simon smirked, making Alec roll his eyes as he put a hand over Magnus's shoulders.
Simon turned back to look at the blonde. "I can't believe you're actually going. I'm gonna miss you." Simon said in all honesty to his best friend, who's eyes shone when he smiled at Simon. He tilted his head to the side, the shade of blue a little lighter than usually as he put a hand on Simon's shoulder. "Hey, it's only LA. I'll be a phone call away and you can always come visit. I have to get adjusted before I can come back to visit you guys, though." Jace said, letting his eyes go to the other 3 in the room. "Isabelle says she's sorry again, she couldn't make it and that she sends her hugs and kisses." Clary said, holding up her phone, where Isabelle had texted her presumably. Jace smiled and nodded, waving a hand. "That's okay, we did live under the same roof for what seemed like an eternity, considering how she always tried to cook breakfast." he said, making Alec laugh along with him.
Jace looked around when they heard the announcement for boarding. "That's me." he said, inhaling and took up his bag. Simon stared at him and felt his heart contract. Jace looked so soft, there was no other way to describe it. His light blue jeans were faded and the rips were more loosed than when he bought them, his white sweater made him look all warm and fuzzy, the black swirling tattoo was still visible on his neck and collarbone, peeking out. The golden hair were in perfect arrangement, at least they were this morning, now Jace slid a hand through them, making a few strands fall unto his face. He held onto the necklace Simon had given to him. It was a round pendant, silver and a bit rusty looking, with a Libra sign on its front - Simon's sign - and words 'always with you' at the back. Magnus had pointed out that it was a kind of gift that a boyfriend would give, but Simon waved him off, saying that Jace would've gotten it. And the blonde did, telling Simon that even though there were hundreds of miles between them, they'd still be best friends.
Jace looked at them all and let his eyes stop at Simon. He came towards him again, wrapping him into a hug again, even though briefly. "See you soon." Jace whispered, before he let go and Simon only nodded, smiling and holding back tears. This wasn't the end of the world, why on earth did he want to cry so bad? Jace stepped back, waved at them and it was like he was glowing - he was so happy. Simon could let him go, knowing he'd be content in LA, doing what he loved. "Bye guys!" he yelled, moving towards the gates and they all yelled their goodbyes, and with one last look, Jace was out of sight. Simon immediately deflated. Clary came up to him and threw a hand over his shoulders, but failed, because Simon was just too tall. Instead, she let his arm wrap around Simon's waist. "He'll be fine, Simon." she said softly and Simon nodded. "I know. I'm just gonna miss him." he said quietly and then Magnus was there. "I still think you should've told him." he stated and Simon gave him a confused look. "Tell him?" he asked, while Alec gave Magnus a glare.
"Yeah, you know, that you love him." he stated and Simon still had a confused look on his face. "I do, he's my best friend." he stated, not understanding. Even Alec had a weird look on his face now, like Simon was missing something. "I mean, that you're 'in love' with him." Magnus continued, rolling his eyes as he inspected a chipped nail he had just discovered. "What? I don't. I mean, I'm not." Simon replied, a weird feeling forming inside his stomach. He wasn't, right? Clary chuckled softly. "If you say so. Let's go home and order pizza, on me. Magnus, Alec?" she said and the boys nodded, Alec took Magnus's hand and stopped him complaining about his nail with a kiss. Simon rolled his eyes, letting Clary guide him to the parking lot.

Simon's head was fuzzy with thought. He and Jace had been friends since they were 12. That's a little over 10 years of friendship and 5 years of being absolutely best friends. They even briefly lived together, when Jace needed a change from the Lightwood house - Simon had allowed him to stay in his small apartment for almost 6 months. He was very comfortable with Jace, in fact he talked to him all the time and about everything. He never felt weird talking to Jace about anything, they were always very open with each other. When Simon came out as bi, Jace was always there to support him. When Jace found out his birth father had died, Simon was there for him, comforting him and keeping his mind off it after letting him grieve. Jace had punched people for Simon and Simon had called out everyone who dared say anything bad about Jace. They were almost inseparable, but Simon never felt like he was 'in love' with his best friend.
He just felt very happy with him around. There were a few occasions where he might have felt like he was attracted to Jace...but that was just a passing feeling, right? After he came out, he had looked at Jace a little differently, but he knew Jace was straight and would never reciprocate the feeling, so why get into it? Instead, he found other people he liked, dated and had a good time with. And Jace was always there, when he went through a bad break-up and vice versa. Jace was his person, his absolute favorite person in the whole world.
Simon tried to reason with himself. Was it weird that he thought these things about his best friend? It didn't automatically mean he wanted to kiss him or... He shook his head, looking out the car window, when and image of Jace leaning into him emerged, soft lips and mismatched eyes closing the distance between them. Simon felt his heart jump. Well, that was weird. He turned his head to Clary, who was driving and listened to the song on the radio. "What did Magnus mean by 'you are in love with Jace'?" he asked, realizing the two other boys had fallen asleep in the backseat. Clary gave Simon a knowing glance but her lips were quirked in a sad smile. "You are an oblivious little muffin. It's obvious you started having feelings for him when you were 16, but none of us pushed it and when you came out shortly after that, we were sure you'd ask Jace out or something. You never did, and I'm guessing because you didn't want to ruin what you had, seeing as Jace is straight, so you pushed it to the back of your mind. But, if you'd have the chance... I mean imagine Jace saying that to you. That he was in love with you. How would you feel?" the redhaired girl said and Simon scrunched up his face, thinking.
You are my favorite everything
Been telling girls that since I was 16
He pictured what Clary had told him, how Jace would say those words to him, and it sounded ridiculous in his mind. "I'd say his lost his mind? I mean, I love the guy, but he's straight. That'd be very unlikely." he said and Clary sighed. "This is worse than I thought. I'm only asking you to imagine it Simon, it doesn't have to be realistic." she said and Simon rolled his eyes, but closed them, thinking again. He imagined him and Jace sitting on his couch, like they had done a million times, and one particular memory came forward. They were watching a movie and Jace decided to try if he can throw a piece of popcorn into Simon's mouth. They ended up tossing the popcorn to each other, Jace failing at catching them a lot more than Simon, resulting in Simon laughing at him for the most of the night. He altered the situation, and instead of sending Jace to the door where they hugged and said goodbye, he imagined Jace coming towards him on the couch, his eyes on Simon as he leaned in to kiss him.
Simon shook his head quickly, when he felt a warm sensation grow in him and his heart thumped loudly in his chest. "Oh." Simon said, thinking of what else he was supposed to say. Clary smiled now, eyes on the road. "I mean, think about it. You are with him like 24/7. And you almost cried when he left for the plane to LA. I get that you are best friends, but I'm pretty sure you want him to be something more." she said and Simon slumped in his seat, thinking about the blonde and bit his lip. Fuck, how was this possible? How can others know about his feelings before he did? Clary was right, he had been pushing them away. "Doesn't change the fact that he's straight." Simon replied then, his voice a little smaller. "That's not necessarily true." Magnus suddenly said, sitting up with Alec's head on his shoulder. "Remember Alec? He hid in the closet for so long, he convinced himself he was not gay. It took one person to make him realize what he truly wanted. You don't have to be bi, or gay or whatever to be in love with someone. Maybe he likes only girls and you. Get what I mean?" Magnus said, smiling to the mirror and Simon eyed him.
Alec gave a small snore and Simon saw Magnus chuckle, moving the strand of hair from Alec's face with a loving look. "Even if you are right-" Simon started and Magnus said "Which I am." and Simon rolled his eyes "-there's literally nothing I can do about that. One, I'm a coward. Two, I'm not going to lose him any more than I'm losing him to another city. And three, coming back to point two, he's in another city!"
Magnus gave him a sparkling smile as Simon stared at him in defeat. "When you love someone, those things don't matter. And he does." the older boy said, making a lot of sense to Simon.
Shut up, I love you
You're my best friend
After a few days, Jace called Simon on videochat, showing him his apartment. "Jeez, how many things did you ship over? I didn't even know you owned so much shit!" Simon exclaimed, noticing the halfway unpacked boxes on the ground. Jace was moving in the living room and plopped down at the couch, lying down on his back so he could hold his phone up, leaving Simon staring down at him. Through the phone, Jace's eyes seemed a little green in the light, and Simon looked at his watch. The sun must've been slowly rising in LA, while Simon had just gotten up. "Why are you even calling me at... 5 in the morning?" Simon asked, calculating the time difference. He had to get to work by 9, but he wouldn't miss the chance to talk to his best friend.
Jace's eyes seemed a little tired, but his smile was genuine. "I'm going to have my hands full with unpacking and settling into the restaurant over the coming week and this was the only timeslot I had. I wanted to see and talk to you." Jace said and Simon felt himself blush, which he never did. Damn Magnus and Clary. And it's not like Alec had backed him up in any way. 'They may be right, Simon' he had said. Pfft, great friends. "You okay?" Jace asked and Simon realized he had zoned out. "Yeah, great. So you like it there, huh?" he asked, knowing it was selfish to hope that maybe Jace would say no. "Yes, I love it here! I can't wait to show you around, once you come over...of course, I have to get acquainted with everything myself first." Jace laughed, happy, and Simon felt himself relax. He was happy that Jace was happy, even though he missed him so much.
"There's this doorman who looks like Gollum. You should see him, I was contemplating on letting my ring 'accidentally' fall down to see if he'd snatch it." Jace said then, making Simon snort loudly and Jace gave him a funny look. "What?" Simon asked, self-conscious suddenly. Jace's face was unreadable. "Nothing, you're cute." Jace said and Simon felt his heart go into overdrive, feeling his cheeks flush again. He saw that Jace was fiddling with the necklace and his expression was sheepish. Simon tried to think of something reasonable to say, hoping he wouldn't blurt out 'I am in love with you' on the spot. There was a sound from Jace's apartment, resembling a doorbell and Jace startled, sitting up. "Oh, right, I had an early delivery for the last of my stuff. I gotta go, Si. Talk to you later, bye!" Jace said, waving to him happily and Simon managed to say 'bye' before the blonde hung up.

After a week, Jace hadn't called, but they texted as much as they could. Jace was very busy at his new job as the sous chef of a fancy restaurant, and Simon focused on his own work at the recording company he worked for. After finishing up his last papers, he shut down his laptop and felt a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, you okay? You look super tired." Maia said, her voice concerned and Simon nodded, as the tan girl leaned onto his desk, arms crossed and brow furrowed. "I'm fine, Maia. Just haven't been sleeping well, is all." Simon told her and Maia snorted. "Because of Jace?" she asked with a wicked grin, making Simon groan. "Honestly, did everyone know about this but me? That's just messed up." he complained, standing up and following Maia out, her heels clicking on the floor. "Hey, don't blame me. Isabelle told me. But I could've gotten to the conclusion myself, you guys gave each other the heart-eyes constantly." Maia laughed, when Simon opened up his car.
"I have to have a word with your best friend about blabbing." Simon announced but Maia only snorted, taking a seat at the passenger's side. "Her girlfriend, more like it. Clary was the one who told Isabelle." Maia stated, making Simon shake his head. "And I thought Clary was my friend. That traitor." he replied, pulling onto the main road. Maia shrugged her shoulders as if it was nothing. "So, are you going to tell him?" she asked and Simon rolled his eyes. "It's kind of complicated, while he's there and I'm here. Besides, I don't know what I'm feeling. We've known each other forever, it's hard to distinguish what the exact feelings are." Simon replied and it was the truth. He had to make sure he really was in love with Jace, not just having some very strong friend feeling towards him. Maia nodded, like she understood. "Once, there was this guy who I was best friends with and he asked me out one day. I said yes, not wanting to hurt his feelings, even though I knew I didn't like him like that. The irony is, after a few months, I started to grow those feelings towards him, while he realized he never had them in the first place, he only thought he did. So he broke up with me and I ended up being heartbroken. So, I think you should really think this through for yourself." Maia said, her eyes on the road.
Simon gave her a glance. "I'm sorry to heart that." he said compassionately and Maia waved him off with her hand. "It was a long time ago." she said with a smile. "But enough sulking around, we're having a movie marathon." she said and Simon laughed at the change of subject. he didn't object.

Simon had just gotten home from work a few weeks later, exhausted on about to take a shower, when his phone buzzed, indicating that Jace was calling him. He accepted the call, stopping in the middle of the room and smiled at Jace's angelic face. "Hey, Simon!" Jace exclaimed and then, he had a very surprised expression on his face. He was quiet for some seconds and Simon thought maybe there was a glitch in the video, before he realized - he had been going to get a shower. Which meant he wasn't wearing a shirt. He blushed immediately, but to his astonishment, Jace seemed very abashed. "Oh, sorry, I totally forgot I wasn't wearing as shirt." Simon said, for whatever reason and sounding dumb. Jace snickered. "How could you forget such a thing? Anyways, it's not a big deal, it's nothing I haven't seen before." the blonde joked and Simon let out a breath he hadn't know he was holding.
"Um, I was going to take a shower, that's how I forgot." he explained, sitting down on a kitchen stool and setting Jace onto the kitchen counter, putting a bowl for support behind the phone so he wouldn't have to hold it. He saw Jace's eyes narrow at him and then he smirked. "Oh, well there's no need to dress up for me anyways." he said and Simon felt his cheeks heat up again. "Um." he said and Jace laughed. "Relax, Si. I'm messing with you. How's work?" he asked and Simon tried to ignore his frantic heart. He also tried not to feel disappointed. He told Jace about his upcoming vacation and Jace whooped, bumping a fist into the air, making Simon shake his head in amusement. "Awesome, you are coming here then! I know the other's are coming on Friday, but if you come tomorrow I can show you around and then we can catch up for two days, just the two of us." Jace said, getting excited and Simon smiled brightly, just thinking about it.
"Hmm, that sounds awful." he deadpanned and saw Jace roll his eyes. "Oh, shut up. I'm your best friend and I call bullshit on that. You love to hang out with me." the blonde said, irritated and Simon decided not to let go just yet. "Nope, Alec has always been my favorite Lightwood." he said seriously, he was great at masking his laughs. Jace eyed him suspiciously and then wagged a finger at him. "Now I know for a fact that's not true. 2015, January 18." Jace said and Simon stared at him in disbelief. "You gave me a birthday card that literally said 'to my favorite Lightwood'." Jace had a very smug look on his face. "You...remember such a thing?" Simon asked, incredulous. His heart had stopped working completely and he felt like he might pass out.
Jace's face was soft when he looked at him. "Of course, we're best friends, Simon. I love you." he said causally and Simon tried not to fall of his stool. We say that all the time to each other, he reminded himself. "So, are you coming?" Jace asked, hopeful and Simon couldn't say no to those puppy eyes.
You are my favorite everything
Been telling you that since 2015
The next day, Simon found himself on the plane and on the phone with Clary. He was, mildly put, freaking out. "But what if-" Simon started again and heard Clary sigh. "Simon, calm down, plee, before you give yourself a heart attack." she said and Simon mumbled "Too late for that", clutching his chest. Clary laughed and Simon could hear Isabelle in the backround. "Izzy said to wait with the passing out until Jace picks you up at the airport. The he can give you mouth-to-mouth." Clary said, chuckling and Simon rolled his eyes. "Haa-haa, very funny." he said sarcastically, but immediately pictured the scene. He shivered and signaled a waiter to fill up his champagne glass. "Simon, just don't overthink this. From what you've told me, Jace has been acting weird lately, well, more than usual. All the sign are there, you two are just ignoring them. Go and make this happen." Clary said with a finality in her tone and Simon groaned, when he hung up on her.
"More champagne sir?" the flight attendant asked and Simon chugged his glass, nodding. He was pretty sure passing out was more of a probability than he had originally thought.
Shut up, I love you
You're my best friend
Jace was waiting for him just by the gates, the same faded jeans, this time coupled with a white T-shirt and sunglasses propped up in his hair, making him look hotter than ever. He shouted Simon's name, and the brunette immediately felt the familiar warmth grow in him and the smile that formed would've been there, whether he liked it or not. He ran towards Jace who did just the same and they crashed together in a tight embrace. Simon actually felt his bones crack, to which Jace made a disgusted noise. Simon laughed, knowing how Jace hated when he cracked his knuckles. Jace pulled back and gave Simon the most brilliant smile. "I can't believe you're here! I missed you way too much, bestie!" Jace exclaimed and Simon hadn't known how much he had missed hearing that soft British accent in real life.
Jace's arms were still around him and Simon was staring down at him, not realizing he had gotten lost in the boys eyes. He must've imagined that Jace was leaning in, because the next second, he was picking up Simon's bag from the ground. "Come on, we have a big day ahead of us!" Jace said, excited and moved, but not before he had grabbed Simon's hand, dragging him with. Simon felt the warm sensation going up his arm and his throat was dry, letting Jace hold him by the hand. He didn't let go, not even when they got outside and Jace was looking for his car. Once they got there, Jace finally let go of him. "Nice ride." Simon commented on the red bugatti and Jace's laughed was melodious in his ears. "Thanks, I got her just two days ago." he replied, sitting inside and Simon followed.

It was still mid-day, so Jace showed him his apartment and then took Simon out to the town. When the sun showed sign of setting, Jace suddenly got up from his seat at the ice cream parlor they were in. Simon eyed him, when the blonde payed and held out a hand to him. "Come on, I want to show you something." he said mysteriously and Simon took his best friend's hand. Throughout the day, Simon had painfully realized he really was in love with Jace. He had missed him so much, but whenever Jace touched him, it was even better than it had been before. He longed to hold his hand all the time and he wished it would've been easy to tell him that.
Inside the car, Jace gave him a look that Simon couldn't decipher and tilted his head. "Jace, what?" Simon asked, deciding to be upfront with him. The blonde fidgeted but shook his head. "Nothing." he said, smiling and they started to drive. "Wait, where are we going?" Simon asked, when Jace pulled onto the highway. Jace nodded to a passing sign and Simon squealed, making Jace laugh. "We're going to Malibu?" he asked and Jace smirked. "Like I said, I have something to show you." he repeated and Simon settled in his seat. His hand was in between them and he payed no attention to it, until he felt Jace's hand on his and his breath got caught in his throat. He didn't dare to look at Jace, but he heard him speak. "Is this okay?" Jace asked him softly and Simon still couldn't understand the new emotion in Jace's voice. He cleared his throat. "Yeah." he said, trying to keep his voice steady when his heart was thumping and he wanted to scream.
We can work it out
You and I are meant to be together
This is how it's supposed to feel
I'm in love with how this feels
He thanked the Lord that the drive wasn't longer than an hour, because he would've died otherwise. They pulled up next to a beach house and Simon saw the sea. "Oh wow, what is this place?" Simon asked, getting out and inspecting the area. "It's mine. I bought it like months ago, when I knew I was coming here. It's much smaller than others in the area, but I wanted one. And I had the money. Plus, you said you'd love to see the sea." Jace said, making Simon turn around abruptly. "You...oh. Please tell me you didn't buy a beach house because I wanted to 'see the sea'." he asked, cringing. Jace laughed. "Not just because of that. Come on, I'll show you around." Jace said, taking Simon's hand again and the brunette felt butterflies in his stomach, again.
The house was cute, but beautiful. Light blue walls with white wooden floors and a anchor thematic around the rooms. Jace set their bags down and then indicated towards the back. "Come on." he said to Simon, leading the way onto the balcony at the back. It was big and spacious enough for three lounging chairs and a corner couch, with a fire pit and grill at the corner, a set of stairs leading down to... "Wow." Simon said, watching the golden beach and the sea behind it, waves crashing with a soothing sound. The skies were coloured a light pink, as the sun had set in the distance.

Jace was beside him and Simon sneaked a glance at him. "I wanted to show this to you, before the other came. I know you always said you wanted to live here. So now, you can come over, any time you want, even when I'm not here. I made you a key." Jace said, looking at the sea with a smile. Simon stared at him in awe. When the soft pink shade made its way onto Jace's face, he realized this was where he wanted to be most in the world. "Jace." he said gently, making the other look at him in question. Simon just stepped a bit closer, so they were standing facing each other, while their hands were crossing on the railing of the balcony.
Simon's eyes found Jace's and he once again marveled at the sight of them - they always looked to be of different colors. "That's the sweetest thing you could do." Simon said quietly. Not what he wanted to say, but he was too scared to say anything else. Jace gave him a shy smile and Simon couldn't believe it. Jace had never been like that with him. And he was so close to him. "Simon, there's something I want to ask you." Jace said softly and Simon's breathing stopped, his body tensed and he felt like his legs might give out. Jace seemed to be struggling with himself. He looked utterly cute. He rubbed the back of his neck and Simon smiled.
"Um, so- I'm actually not sure how to-" Jace rambled and Simon took the last step, closing the distance and leaned in, almost touching Jace's lips, but not quite. He heard the blonde's breath hitch and he saw Jace's hand tense on the balcony. He lingered over his lips, feeling the sensation even though they weren't even touching. "Why did you stop?" Jace asked suddenly, his voice a whisper. Simon looked up to him through his lashes. "I wasn't sure if-" he started, but Jace grabbed his shirt and pulled Simon towards him, crashing their lips together. Simon gave a small gasp of surprise when he felt the soft touch and his body felt like liquid. Jace put a hand on his lower back and pulled him close, making Simon let out a small noise of content. Jace smiled into the kiss, moving his head slowly to the side and made Simon part his lips.

Simon's hand was on Jace's chest and he could feel his heart race - he couldn't believe that Jace felt what he felt, that Jace's heart was beating just as fast as his. Jace moved against him like he had been doing this forever and sent waves of pleasure and electricity through Simon's body. When Jace's hand slid under Simon's shirt and touched the skin on his back, Simon gasped and pulled back, suppressing a moan. He rested his head on Jace's, panting. "Wait, wait." Simon said suddenly. Jace smiled. "Don't you think this is the perfect time to say 'I've done my waiting. 12 years of it'?" Jace asked. Simon burst into laughter and he felt so light all of a sudden, he couldn't really hold himself up. His stomach hurt from laughing as he slid to the ground, pulling Jace down with him. The waves were still sending their soothing melody towards them, when Jace pulled Simon to his lap and the brunette kissed his cheek. "I had no idea." he said then, letting his hands go through Jace's blonde strands.
The blonde hummed, closing his eyes at the touch. "Me neither. Or we did and just ignored it." Jace replied, making Simon nod. "We're such idiots." he then said with a chuckle, making Jace laugh, feeling his chest vibrate under him. "We are." the blonde agreed and set his gaze on Simon, when he stopped laughing. "I love you, Simon." Jace said and this time, Simon knew that it had a whole other meaning. "I love you, too, Jace." Simon replied, feeling the words roll of his tongue with ease, but felt the freshness of them, like he had just said them to Jace for the first time. In a way, he had.
Jace captured his lips with his own again, making Simon melt to his touch. They stayed, until the skies turned a darker shade of pink, and then to red, until it started to turn a darker shade of blue. After that, Jace held out his hand to Simon and they walked down to the beach, letting the water run over their feet as they enjoyed being just the two of them, for the first time, for real.

A/N: My gaybes are so cute. I love them so much. Also, I had so much fun writing this, the HP reference just came accidentally and I laughed my ass off. Sorry about that, I'm a nerd. *Writer flies away on a broom*
