One - in which Simon sings one last song (AU)
Simon looked at the long table covered in white cloth in front of them, feeling a bit overwhelmed. He was sitting at a round table, fidgeting with the cutlery, until a hand stopped him.
"Are you okay?" Magnus asked.
Simon looked at him and smiled - or tried to. It may have looked like he was about to throw up.
"Yes, perfect." he managed to say, without a shaking voice.
He glanced back at the long table, where Jace was just laughing at something Clary said to him. He looked beautiful in his white tux, his tie was golden, so it matched Clary's dress. His eyes crinkled when he laughed and the sound made it to Simon even over the slow music.
"I'm not convinced." Magnus said dryly.
Simon rolled his eyes, averting his gaze from Jace and looked at Magnus again, when Alec joined them. The man sat down, kissed Magnus on the cheek and then sighed once he took his seat.
"I am so exhausted. Madzie just won't stop bullying me to dance with her. You do it next time." he said, taking a sip from his glass of water.
Magnus smiled sweetly at his husband and put a hand on his cheek. "You are such a dad. But alright, next round I'll take her." Magnus said with an amused expression, but his loving eyes never left Alec's and the other man kissed him on the lips, smiling contently.
"Ugh, give it a rest, will you?" Simon said flatly, burying his face into his hands.
Isabelle Lightwood took a sip from her cocktail and observantly stated "You are down and I know why. Simon, I know this is hard for you." Simon rolled his eyes once again, but didn't look at Isabelle.
"Are you sure you're up for this?" Alec asked, his worrying gaze never leaving Simon. When looking around at the table, Simon realized they all we're watching him intently. He said in a serious tone "Yes. It's been a year and besides, this is my way of saying goodbye. I'm leaving tomorrow."
Isabelle hit his shoulder and Simon winced. "What was that for!?" he half-shouted, rubbing the spot where Isabelle had landed the blow.
She narrowed her eyes at him and almost hissed "You didn't tell me you were moving tomorrow! I'm your best friend!"
Simon rolled his eyes for what felt like the millionth time that night. "Magnus is my best friend." he replied nonchalantly, which earned him another blow to the shoulder.
"Ow, Izzy, stop it! I was joking!" he said, wincing. Magnus and Alec were laughing.
"You guys knew?" Isabelle asked the boys, who immediately stopped laughing and cowered at her sight.
"We didn't know he hadn't told you!" Alec quickly said.
Magnus nodded and added "We're going to help him move."
Isabelle seemed offended, but at least she had stopped hitting Simon. Instead, she turned her gaze to Simon and this time asked softly "And you're sure this is what you want?"
Simon sipped his water, giving himself some time to answer. Eventually he said "Yes, LA is a new start for me."
Isabelle looked like she might cry so he quickly added "I'll visit from time to time, okay? And you're always welcome at my place." Isabelle was about to say something but was cut off when a voice spoke.
The music had died down and the wedding planner, Lydia was her name, took to the microphone. "Hello again, all! The happy couple thanks you so much for being here. And now, one of their dearest friends is going to perform a song, to which they can dance their first dance to!" she joyfully said to the mic.
There was clapping all around and Simon stood up, buttoning his dark red jacket at the front. At the same time, Jace took Clary's hand and walked her to the center of the room. Simon reached the white piano at the corner of the floor and sat down. There was also a microphone attached, so he spoke, trying to sound as gleeful as Lydia.
"Hey, everyone. I'm Simon and this song is for Jace and Clary. I wish you all the best." He looked at Jace who smiled at him, and it was just like the first time Simon saw him smile. Gorgeous. Simon started to play and Jace and Clary glided around the room.
Maybe one day
I won't sing about you
I'll sing a song about someone new
But right here, right now
You are on my mind
And I think about you all the time
I'm sending a message to you
And I'm hoping that it will get through
Simon sang and remembered the day 2 years ago, when Jace had been introduced to him by his best friend's boyfriend, Alec. Jace had worn the tightest skinny jeans he could probably find and a plain, white T-shirt, with a leather jacket on top of that. His golden hair looked disheveled in the most sexiest way possible and his blue eyes, one mixed with brown, stopped on Simon, who almost fainted at the sight before him.
"Hello, I'm Jace," he had said in a deep voice. And just like that, Simon fell for him.
When it was good it was bittersweet honey
You made me sad 'til I loved the shade of blue
I know you don't want to talk to me
So this is what I will do
Maybe you're listening
So here's one last song for you
Here's one last song for you
Simon's mind then took him back about a year ago, when Jace was standing in his living room, in his apartment, looking beautiful as ever, but his eyes full of anguish and sadness.
"Simon, you have to understand. Please, let me explain." He had said.
Simon had raised his hands in defeat "I know what you're going to say. It doesn't mean it'll hurt less. But I guess that's what you want."
Jace had looked utterly destroyed, shaking his head as if he could stop Simon's words from entering his mind. But he was the one doing the destruction. After 6 months, Simon knew Jace was the one for him. He just knew. After 6 months of being together, he never wanted to let go. It was a short time to fall for someone, he knew. But it was Jace. And he just knew. And now, he'll never get to see what could've happened.
"I fell in love with someone else." Jace said, his voice trembling and almost immediately, when the words left his mouth, he seemed to regret it.
Simon had felt a tear roll down his face. "I know. And I fell for you. So there's that." he had said, his voice empty of any emotion.
Jace had approached him warily but Simon instinctively had taken a step back.
"Don't" he had said. Jace's eyes had widened but he had stopped moving.
"I still love you, Simon. Please understand. I don't want to lose you." he had begged. Simon had scoffed and tried so hard not to scream.
"You don't get to say that, okay? Who gave you the right to come and make me fall for you, thinking this could be real, that this was real, and then just take it away? And now, you say you don't want to lose me? What the fuck am I supposed to do with that?" At some point, he had still began to scream and Jace had flinched at the sound of it.
And I hope it makes you feel
And I hope it makes you burn
And I hope it reminds you of how much it hurt
I'm sending a message to you
And I'm hoping that it will get through
Simon watched as Clary and Jace danced and he felt his voice quiver for a moment but he forced it steady. Jace's words still replayed at the back of his mind.
"Simon. I know what I'm asking is cruel. But what we had, I don't regret it. I don't. It's just too much. It's not...It's not what I want, in the end. And I am so sorry, you have to know that." Simon had wanted to laugh.
How dare he? After everything he had done for him, after he had helped Jace realize that it was okay to be who he was, he still had the balls to say that he still loved Simon? No, he doesn't get to win this. He gets married and lives happily ever after and Simon? What will he have?
When it was good it was bittersweet honey
You made me sad 'til I loved the shade of blue
I know you don't want to talk to me
So this is what I will do
Maybe you're listening
So here's one last song for you
Simon sang with all his heart, in hopes that maybe Jace was listening to the words, that maybe, he can understand, that he was letting go. That after tonight, he won't let himself lose. He would walk away from this, from Jace, and let his heart break in full, with no plan to patch it up.
And maybe some day, someone will come, and help him mend it. But for now, he just hoped Jace would understand. Simon's eyes went watery when he sang the next part and he didn't dare to look up at the couple dancing in front of him.
In case you hear this
Then know you're the love of my life
Want to tell you I'm sorry
I miss having you by my side
When you were mine
Simon looked at them, not being able to avert his gaze anymore and he saw Jace's eyes stare at him. Was that sadness he saw? Regret? Broken promises? Or was it just pain for what he did and was still doing to him? Simon knew that whatever it is, he had to push himself to not care. What they had - it was over. It was sweet and painful, but over.
When it was good it was bittersweet honey
You made me sad 'til I loved the shade of blue
I know you don't want to talk to me
So this is what I will do
Maybe you're listening
When Simon finished, he let his hands stay on the piano, holding the one last note, not wanting it all to end there. He closed his eyes at the last notes, remembering how Jace's lips were soft against his when he kissed him for the last time, tears, that were falling down both of their cheeks, making it salty and bittersweet.
So here's one last song for you
Here's one last song for you
