Four - in which Simon knows Jace (AU)
When the first rays of sun landed on Simon's face, he didn't quite understand, where he was. Or why he had woken up, for that matter. Sitting up and rubbing his eyes, he noticed that the sky behind the window was a beautiful light pink, the sun slowly rising in the distance behind the birch trees.
His eyes glanced around the room. It was a guest room, and he remembered he was at Magnus' house, staying the night after he and his friends had watched movies almost until 2 am. He heard the faint sound of birds chirping outside and he stood up, opening the window. The fresh air hit his face and he breathed it in. Then he realized, what had woken him up.
The soft music could be heard faintly, played so quietly, that Simon wasn't sure if it was real. Maybe he was imagining it? Or was he still dreaming? He decided to put his sweats on and slipped on his T-shirt, and went to inspect. Padding across the hall barefoot, he rounded the corner. Magnus' house was huge, almost like a mansion. Simon stood at the top of the staircase, descending the stairs and trying to identify the sound.
It was still faint, but it was there. He remembered, Magnus had a music room somewhere. He trusted his ears and went by sound. When he walked around the house, it was quiet. But it was not an eerie quiet, but a calming silence in the early morning, for when Simon glanced at the clock in the kitchen, it was just a little over 7. The only sound was the soft melody. He suppressed a yawn that threatened to escape him and stopped in another hallway. Just to his left, a door was ajar and he realized the music was flowing through there.
He stepped closer and quietly, peered in. The room was quite big, on the wall opposite to the door there was a huge window, where the beautiful scenery of the countryside could be seen. In the left corner there was a black grand piano. And behind it sat Jace, his chest bare and wearing his sweatpants, bare feet on the cold wooden floor. His golden hair fell to his face, slightly damp, which told Simon that he must've had a shower just before he came in here. His eyes were closed, when he played a soft melody that Simon didn't recognize. In a daze, he leaned on the door frame and watched the golden boy play, trying not to make a sound. Then Jace started to sing softly and Simon found himself softly gasping; he didn't know Jace could sing.
If I could fly, I'd be coming right back home to you
I think I might give up everything, just ask me to
The words leaving his mouth seemed sad and melody proved the point. Jace's face seemed concentrated, but eyes remained closed. His voice was slightly rough, but sounded perfect with the piano. His fingers hit the keys so softly, Simon thought it to be humanly impossible.
Pay attention, I hope that you listen 'cause I let my guard down
Right now I'm completely defenseless
The blonde seemed completely vulnerable, when Simon was watching him. He had never seen Jace Herondale like this - like he could be broken. Simon's eyes drifted to his jawline that was drawn in a hard line and his lips that curved when he sang. Then he saw Jace's muscles and abs move, when he let his hands run along the keys, and he unintentionally licked his lips.
For your eyes only, I'll show you my heart
For when you're lonely and forget who you are
I'm missing half of me when we're apart
Now you know me, for your eyes only
For your eyes only
Simon thought back to an incident a week ago, when he had come from a date with Maia and plopped down on the couch in their apartment. Jace, his roommate, had scowled at him. Simon had felt the gaze on him, and insinuated a conversation.
"What?" he asked the blond boy sitting next to him. Jace's eyes were glued to the TV when he scoffed. "Nothing." he said. Simon rolled his eyes. "I know you Jace, something's up." Simon said. This time, Jace was the one to roll his eyes and he turned his head a little, looking at Simon, and a strand of hair fell to his face. He mumbled something, looking at the ceiling. Simon held up his hand to his ear in a mocking way. "One more time, please?" he said in a fake, cheerful voice. Jace turned his gaze to him and his blue eyes stared into Simon's. Simon saw the brown in his left eye and found himself thinking, that it looked beautiful.
"I said, you don't know me all that well." Jace repeated, a bit louder this time. Simon looked at him in confusion, unsure where this hostility was coming from. "I don't get what you're angry about. Did I do something?" Simon asked, now worried. Jace seemed pained by something. He looked at the TV again. Simon scooted closer to his friend and put a hand on his shoulder. Jace startled at this, but didn't move away. Simon took this as a good sign. "Jace, talk to me. We're best friends, right?" he tried. The blonde seemed even more frustrated than before, he closed his eyes and breathed out in annoyance. Simon wasn't sure what to do.
After some silence, Jace looked at him again. Simon found himself getting lost in his eyes - they were like the mid-day sky blue, with a speck of brown, like chestnuts. He tried thinking about anything else. "Best friends. Right. You didn't even tell me you had a girlfriend." Jace said, something in his tone giving a hint of anger. Simon looked at him in confusion. "I'm not even sure were dating, with Maia that is. I'm sorry, if that's what upset you? That I didn't tell you?" he replied, his voice unsure. Jace scoffed again and rose from the couch, pacing the floor. Simon was bewildered. "I just...I don't-" Jace tried to speak, but couldn't finish. There was a quiver in his voice and Simon found himself to be scared. What was going on?
Jace's voice brought him out of his thoughts and he looked at him again. Simon felt some kind of understanding rising in him, but he wasn't sure what it was. He tried to hold on to the thought, trying to decipher it, but it was just out of reach.
I've got scars even though they can't always be seen
And pain gets hard, but now you're here and I don't feel a thing
Jace's face was now sad, and Simon saw him like he had never seen him before. Jace Herondale was hurting and Simon hadn't even known. But why?
Pay attention, I hope that you listen 'cause I let my guard down
Right now I'm completely defenseless
Simon was sure that the world had stopped spinning, when he thought back to that night again, realization hitting him, knocking out his breath.
"Why can't you understand?" Jace was now almost yelling. Simon was frightened. He had no idea what had set Jace off, and he never liked an angry Jace. It didn't suit him, but he still managed to look beautiful, even then - like an avenging angel. "I- Understand what?" Simon tried. He looked at the blond in front of him, his arms flying about when he spoke and tried to see what he was missing. He was distracted by Jace's hair, that were messy and out of place, but still in a good way. Simon wanted to tuck the strands behind his ears, to see his face more clearly.
"I don't even know why I agreed to share this apartment. I mean, I thought...This was a waste of time." Jace was saying, bringing Simon out of his thoughts. "What? Waste of time? It's not like I made you do this." Simon grumbled, trying not to piss Jace off even more but it was hard, when he still didn't know what was going on. "If I had known you'd be parading your conquests through our apartment, I wouldn't have come." Jace hissed, his eyes narrowing at Simon. The other boy raised an eyebrow. "So you're saying you have not done the same thing?" he asked in a mocking tone. Jace groaned painfully and Simon was stunned. "See? You don't know me! I haven't been on a date in almost a year!" Jace shouted.
Simon was so surprised, he couldn't say anything for a good 10 seconds. Then, he stared at Jace, who had now stopped in the middle of the room, breathing hard. "You're Jace Herondale, you sleep around more than I do." Simon said flatly. That was a mistake. Jace's face turned to hurt and his eyes widened. Simon realized his mistake too late, when he held up his hand to Jace. "I didn't meant to-" he started, but Jace had turned on his heel and stormed off to his room, slamming the door shut.
Simon sat there, dazed. What just happened?
Simon listened to the sounds of the piano. Jace played so beautifully, Simon's heart seemed to ache. It was as if Jace put his emotion's into the piece and the sound carried the emotion to Simon, hitting him full and hard.
For your eyes only, I'll show you my heart
For when you're lonely and forget who you are
I'm missing half of me when we're apart
Now you know me, for your eyes only
For your eyes only
Jace let his hands glide over the piano and the more he played, the more into it he lost himself. His hair were now falling around his face in perfect golden strands and Simon realized, he loved it. He had always admired everything about Jace. He never let himself fully indulge in the feelings, that's all. But Jace had.
I can feel your heart inside of mine, I feel it, I feel it
I've been going out of my mind, I feel it, I feel it
Know that I'm just wasting time
And I hope that you don't run from me
Simon's eyes widened a bit, when he saw a small tear make it's way down Jace's cheek. He felt so stupid and wanted to hit himself, because he was almost sure, that he was the cause of that one tear. He had made the most beautiful angel fall apart, and for what? Why?
For your eyes only, I'll show you my heart
For when you're lonely and forget who you are
I'm missing half of me when we're apart
Now you know me, for your eyes only
Jace's voice quivered in the end a bit, and at the last verse he opened his eyes, staring straight ahead at the piano, at the keys and his eyes seemed golden almost, in the morning light.
For your eyes only, I'll show you my heart
For when you're lonely and forget who you are
I'm missing half of me when we're apart
Now you know me, for your eyes only
After the last notes, Jace's hands still hovered above the keys and he seemed to breathe harshly, in and out. In and out. His chest rising and falling rapidly. Simon lifted himself and walked into the room. Jace noticed him and Simon saw his eyes widen in surprise and quickly looked away, trying to subtly dry the tear that had escaped him. Simon felt utterly stupid.
"Jace..." he said softly, not knowing what else to say. The blonde looked out the window, when Simon sat next to him on the stool. He touched Jace's hand and the blonde drew it away. "Jace, look at me. Please?" Simon said with the softest and sweetest voice he could manage. Finally, Jace turned his head, looking at Simon with a look of anguish and Simon wanted to hug him, so badly. He lifted his hand to Jace's cheek, who was taken aback and sat like a statue. "Simon, what are you-" he started to say but Simon cut in, his voice slightly too loud in the now quiet room.
"Jace, I am so sorry. I should've seen it. I mean, I did see it. I saw you. But I never really saw you, know what I mean? I didn't think it mattered...I didn't think you'd ever see me that way. So I never let myself think of you in that way, either." Simon said, looking at Jace's eyes, that were now staring at him in slight shock. "Simon, I only ever saw you in that way." Jace said, his voice slightly shaking. Simon sighed and moved his hand, caressing Jace's cheek and the blonde melted into the touch. Simon scooted closer to him, throwing his hands around the other boy. Jace seemed to relax into him and Simon smiled a little.
"I'm so sorry, Jace. I never want to see you that sad again, as you were just now. I promise, I'll take care of you." Simon found himself saying. Jace's head rose and he looked at Simon, like he didn't quite believe him. "So you...you want to be with me?" he asked, his eyebrows up in question. His eyes were even more clear now, still watery from before. Simon touched his hair and moved a loose strand behind his ear. The morning sun shone behind them, giving Jace a kind of halo around him, and Simon found himself filled with a warm and loving feeling.
"Yes, Jace. I do, I really do. You're beautiful. And now, I do know you." Simon replied, holding Jace's face by his chin, making him look into his eyes. Jace seemed to relax at this, his eyes full of hope and his full lips curving upwards when he gave a small smile. Simon's eyes went to Jace's mouth and the blond noticed this. He leaned in slightly and smiled again. "Well, what are you waiting for?" he whispered, his eyes dancing with amusement. Simon almost rolled his eyes - even now, Jace couldn't help but be his cocky self. Simon leaned in, so their lips were just almost touching.
The anticipation was thick in the air around them and both stopped for a second, relishing it, before Simon couldn't take it anymore and closed the distance between them. The kiss was so light, like feathers touching his lips, when Jace's mouth moved on his and he felt like everything was lifted from his shoulders. Jace's hands went around Simon's body and Simon's hands went to Jace's neck, pushing him softly towards himself, deepening their kiss. It was sweet and caressing, like Jace didn't want to break him, like he was something fragile. Simon didn't know why, because right now, the person who was fragile, was Jace himself.
When Simon let his tongue run along Jace's lower lip, the blonde made a small sound and opened his mouth, letting Simon in. Simon felt his breath leaving him but at the same time, it was like he breathed truly, for the first time. Jace's hand went under his shirt, gliding over his skin, making Simon shiver. Their kiss was still filled with passion, but also with something sweet, like a promise, that this - what they had right now - would go on to last even when they parted.
When Jace broke apart from him, his face was flushed and Simon was sure, his was no better. But the blond was smiling, the smile making his face seem like something someone should paint a picture about, or write a book about. Simon still held him, resting their foreheads together. Jace's eyes closed and he sighed happily. Simon smiled, too. He had been stupid. But he had all the time in the world to make up for it.
