Neighbour AU Part 1: James
"Prongs, stop staring at that girl," My best friend, Sirius says as he starts to pull me away from the window.
I steal one more glance at the red head that is currently reading on her lawn and turn to glare at Sirius, "What?" I demand.
"My best friend is ignoring me for the girl that he has never met yet has imagined an entire future with," he glares in return.
"Sorry. Right. What do you want to do?" I move myself completely away from the window.
"Seeing as you probably won't be able to focus on anything other than that red head, we are going to see Moony. He happens to know her and is a close friend."
Before he can stop me, I'm jumping up and racing out the door, down the stairs and down the street to Remus' house. I pound my fist against the door and wait for someone to open it.
"Hi James. It's so good to see you." His mum opens the door.
"Hi, Mrs Lupin. Is Remus here? Thanks!" I call as I'm running up the stairs before she can answer.
I hear Sirius yelling at me from the street.
"Remus," I start yelling as I burst through his bedroom door. "Why didn't you tell me that you're friends with my neighbour?!"
He looks up from his book with a confused expression, "What neighbour?"
"You know, the beautiful red head. I've only been going on about her for, oh I don't know, all summer!"
"Well, sorry. I figured that you would just go talk to her yourself."
I pull out his desk chair and sit down. The run down the street is starting to catch up with me and I suddenly feel tired. I can hear Sirius talking to Mrs Lupin downstairs and guilt starts to replace my exhaustion.
Before we can continue talking Sirius appears in the doorway, frowning at me.
"What? Remus knows the girl that I have a crush on. You really think I wasn't going to run?" I say as I fake disappointment. "I thought you were my best friend and therefore knew everything about me. Obviously not. Remus you're now my best friend."
"Oh, joy." Remus rolls his eyes.
"Anyway, Moony can you please tell Prongs here everything about this red head that he's in love with, so that we can leave you alone?" Sirius takes a seat at the end of Remus' bed.
"First, her name is Lily, so you can stop referring to her as 'red head'..."
"Lily. That suits her. It's pretty," I think.
"...Her favourite flowers are roses..."
"Note taken."
"...Her sister doesn't like her because she's really good at art. What else do you want to know?"
"Does she have a boyfriend?" I plead no in my head.
Remus shakes his head, "No, she's never really been into boys. She prefers books."
A victory party starts in my head.
"Prongs? Is your heart satisfied? Can we leave Moony in peace?" Sirius rolls his eyes and gestures towards the door.
"Yes. Thank you, Moony." I stand and pat his head with a smirk.
"We will keep you updated on his pathetic, nonexistent progress," Sirius frowns at me.
"Whatever. I'd like to get back to my book, now," Remus says while rolling his eyes.
Sirius and I leave Remus to his book and make our way downstairs.
"Hello again boys. Off already?" Mrs Lupin smiles at us from the kitchen.
"Yes. We've got somewhere to be unfortunately," Sirius says while showing off his signature grin.
"Sorry about earlier, Mrs Lupin. I had a bit of an emergency," I wince sheepishly.
"It's quite all right, James. I'll see you two soon. Okay?" She comes over and pats our shoulders.
"Bye, Mrs Lupin," Sirius grabs my arms and tugs me out of the house.
As we're rounding the corner out of Remus' driveway, someone bangs into my chest. I reach out to catch them before they fall over. I hear something hit the ground but ignore it when I see the person in front of me. Red hair, green eyes, Lily.
