Part 6
The group had been walking for hours, crossing through a desolate stretch of land with nothing but dirt and debris for miles. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the barren landscape. They were all exhausted—physically and emotionally drained after days of scavenging with no luck. Supplies were running low again, and Rick couldn’t help but voice the concern that had been gnawing at him all day.
“Look, we need to find something. We’ve been walking for too long and we’re not going to make it much longer if we don’t find food or water,” he said, his voice growing more tense with each passing moment.
Jihyo, who had been walking quietly beside him, suddenly paused and tilted her head, as if listening to something. The group slowed to a stop, waiting for her to speak.
“What is it?” Glenn asked, his eyes scanning the empty horizon.
“I think I smell something,” Jihyo said, her voice light and thoughtful. “Let me check.” Without another word, she wandered off into the distance, heading toward a small cluster of trees.
Everyone exchanged looks, unsure of what she had sensed. But they knew by now that Jihyo’s intuition was uncanny. If she said she smelled something, there was usually something there.
A few minutes later, Jihyo returned, holding a bundle of items in her hands.
“Guess what I found?” she said with a grin, her eyes sparkling.
Rick’s brow furrowed, and he took a cautious step forward. “What is it?”
With a dramatic flourish, Jihyo opened her bag, reaching in and pulling out a small, portable stove, a couple of cans of beans, and two bottles of fresh water.
The group collectively gasped, disbelief written on their faces.
“Jihyo… how did you even…?” Abraham began, his voice trailing off.
“I just… I have a knack for finding things,” she said, her tone matter-of-fact. “I thought we could use a hot meal, so I found some cans. And I figured you guys would need water, so I found a couple of bottles.”
Sasha blinked in amazement. “This is insane. You really found this just like that?”
Jihyo’s smile widened, and she shrugged nonchalantly. “Pretty much.”
Daryl, who had been watching in stunned silence, finally shook his head. “You’re… unbelievable,” he muttered under his breath, clearly both awed and confused by her strange ability to always find the right thing at the right time.
“You’re seriously a walking miracle, Jihyo,” Beth said, her voice filled with admiration.
Jihyo’s smile softened, and she gave a small, modest shrug. “I don’t know about miracle, but I try to keep the important things with me. Food, water, warmth… you know, the usual.”
Rick stepped forward, his face now serious. “Jihyo, you’re more than just a walking miracle. You’ve saved us more times than I can count. We don’t know how you do it, but you’re keeping us going. We owe you.”
Jihyo blinked, slightly taken aback by his words, and then a soft smile appeared on her face. “You don’t owe me anything. We’re a team. We take care of each other.”
The group huddled together as Jihyo set up the small stove, warming the cans of beans and sharing the water. It was the first real meal they’d had in days, and it tasted better than anything they could have imagined. Laughter bubbled up as they passed around the food, the tension easing for the first time in what felt like forever.
As they sat together, enjoying the warmth and the meal, Rick couldn’t help but look at Jihyo with a renewed sense of gratitude. Her strange, almost magical ability to find what they needed when they needed it had become a lifeline in their harsh, unforgiving world. She wasn’t just a teammate—she was a force of nature, someone who always managed to pull them through the darkest moments.
“Jihyo,” Rick said quietly, his voice sincere, “you’ve saved us more times than I can count. We couldn’t have made it this far without you.”
Jihyo simply smiled, looking around at her friends with a sense of peace. “We make it this far together. That’s all that matters.”
The group nodded, and for the first time in days, they allowed themselves to relax, basking in the moment of calm they had so desperately needed. As they finished their meal and prepared to set up camp for the night, they couldn’t help but feel a little bit of hope returning to their hearts.
With Jihyo by their side and her seemingly endless supply of miracles, they knew they could face whatever came next.
