JAWAHIR

I can believe I'll be a Mrs in a few hours. How time flys is beyond me.

Hajiya wanted the wedding to take a place at the same time with my cousins; Karima and Hanifa, which is in August. So 7 months later and here we are. At first I was against having the weddings at the same time, but it turned out to be an advantage. I won't have the attention solely on me.

The wedding preparation was tiring as hell. Who knew preparing a wedding was this hectic.

Mammie and Mama travelled a week after the date was set to get the house furnitures. They got everything a person could put in a house even though Ammiey said the house is too big and it wouldn't be fair for bride's family —me being the bride, can you imagine?— to furnish the whole house. So she said we should furnish half and she'll furnish the other half, initially she said she'll furnish everything but Abu and Mammie didn't let her.

Then Ya Nana and Kulthum were in charge of the interior design. They asked for my opinions but I gave none. Seriously, I don't care as long as I have a big and spacious kitchen were I can do anything I like then I'm okay. And I also trust their taste, I just hope they won't fall my hand.

Suhayla was in charge of anything that has to do with clothing, her and the girls with the exception of Kausar decided on the asoebis. And all the dresses I wore.

If you looked at it I did nothing actually. People have been taking care of things. All they needed from me was my approval—not that Hajiya considered it but still.

Then my cousins brought up the issue of pre wedding pictures. I'm really against it. The pictures are becoming something else this days, all the posts you see on instagram were the couples do some ungodly poses which are totally haram btw, is becoming too much. Alhamdulillah my brothers especially Ya Akram didn't agree. I wouldn't have done it anyway, even though they claimed the pictures will be decent. And even if we'll have decent pictures, I don't think me and *coughs* Aayan are comfortable enough, we haven't reach that stage in our relationship, if you'll even call it a relationship.

The only time I spoke to him was when Kausar handed him the phone. Ya Rabb! that was the most awkward conversation I've ever had in my life, she did face my wrath when we met after that. Anyway, the only way and time I speak with him is when his sister is here and with her phone. We haven't had that serious conversation about this arranged marriage of a thing.

The events are: the wedding Fatiha, then walima that will take place at the groom's house; quite and simple, just the way I like it. But somehow my sisters and friends organized a bridal shower for me.

The bridal shower was amazing. Initially it wouldn't take place, but somehow they made it happen. I wasn't aware, they planned everything behind my back.

*********

I'm sitting down in my room for the time being, well till after the wedding. Guests and relatives have already started arriving, the house is full. So me, my sisters, friends and some young female relatives are here in one of Abu's guesthouse in Apo.

The Esthetician that came from maiduguri a month ago just left after pampering me. Lami is her name, she's 20, she said the business has been running in their family for decades. She's really nice and friendly. One of Mammie's friends recommended her.

Anyway, I'm now sitting down on an ottoman reading on wattpad. Don't blame me, I've nothing to do, since the events are only the wedding Fatiha then a walima after that. My cousins are having a brunch party or something -I've never heard of anything like that. I decided not to go for two reasons, one; it's not my forte at all, two; I don't want small talks, like how I'm there to get all the attention away from the brides. Knowing my cousins and some of my relatives, they will definitely say something like that. So I saved them the trouble.

Just then Hayla, Jahara, Kausar and Lami came in. I thought they've all left for the event.

"Ukhti, get up. It's time to get you ready."

Ready? For what? I've already told them I won't attend.

"But why Hayla?"

"You ask too many questions." Jahara answered.

"Yeah Jawjaw just keep quite and let's do our job here." Kausar chimed in.

I sighed. Theses girls. What job are they talking about anyway.

"I believe she's through with today's session?" Suhayla asked Lami.

Lami nodded positively. Suhayla clapped her hands. "Okay Jah give her the dress.

"What dre......." I couldn't complete the sentence because she shoved a box in my hand and pushed me into the closet.

"Dress sharpaly." Kausar yelled. I chuckled. She's becoming a true Nigerian everyday, she's even speaking broken English and her Hausa has improved very well.

I opened the box and brought out a gown, it's soft and silky. I carefully put the dress on. I looked at myself in the mirror. Wow!!  The dress has sheet short sleeves and ornate beaded dress detail throughout the bust and sleeves. The waist has asymmetrical pleats. The skirt has a cascading ruffle detail at one side and flowing mermaid silhouette and a sweep train. It is made of stretch satin and tulle.

I stepped out of the closet, and they gasped.

"Oh emm gee Jawahir you look chic." Jahara squealed.

"Yes Masha Allah." Kausar added.

"I cannot believe my sister is getting married." Hayla wiped a fake tear. "I'm old." She wailed dramatically. Smh always the drama queen.

"Yeah yeah, you're old and you're letting me get married before you." I teased.

"Ke shut up, aure daga Allah ne." We all laughed at that.

"But seriously tell me what's going on." They all pretended to zip their mouths then locked them and threw away the key.

"So you see we can't say anything." Kausar batted her lashes. I thought her mouth is zipped, idiot.

"Okay sit down, and Jahara will do your makeup." Oh nooo.

"Sit."

I rolled my eyes. "Just don't pinch me." I warned. The last time she did my makeup during my sisters wedding, she left tons of bruises on my fair skin.

She raised her hands. "Hey, it's all up to you, you squirm I pinch."

After a short while, she's through. Wow she's fast. I looked at myself in the mirror. Masha Allah, Jahara is a great makeup artist. She changed my face and at the same time I'm still me. The makeup isn't too much. Just right. She did a smoked eyeshadow with a touch of gold. The eyeliner is slightly winked, and then the lashes are full and curly. The eyebrows, Wow!!gone are my bushy eyebrows, replaced with a thin high arch brows. The kajal is very light then she finally stained my lips with a light red lipstick.

I hugged her and thanked her. Lami then proceeded to do my hair.

"I love your hair Jawahir." She said as she stroked it.

I looked at her through the mirror and smiled softly. "Thank you Lams." She shook her head at the nickname.

"It's full, lengthy, soft and silky." She continued. Hayla mumbled a whatever and I giggled. You see Suhayla is jealous of my hair. While mine is full, lengthy, soft and silky as Lami described, hers is full also but not lengthy as mine, it stops an inch or two below her neck while mine stops an inch above my butt. She had a haircut many times so that the length will increase but no vail, it stops at the same place all the time and it's very strong and hard.

"I wish we could exchange, then I'll give you mine." I sighed.

She just glared at me. I chuckled, who I'm I kidding? I love my hair, out of all my features, my hair is what I love the most. Because of its silkiness, thickness and length I'm not able to do any of those Nigerian braids all the time,—-it's exhausting and time consuming plus I'm also lazy, lol. I just cannot sit down for 3 to 4 hours—so I watch hair tutorials online to keep my hair healthy and stylish.

Lami made my hair in a waterfall. After she was through we headed to the car. I asked them why they aren't dress and they said the will dress at our destination which I'm yet to know by the way.

"Okay time to blindfold her." What? This is kidnapping.

"Is it really necessary?" I asked

"As a matter of fact, yes it is." Kausar replied.

I sighed as Jahara blindfolded me with a bandanna. "How fingers do you see?" I can't really see anything so I said three.

"Meh, She can't see. I didn't even put my hand up." Nice one Jahara.

I heard the door being pulled open. I guess we are here.

"Okay Jaw habibty watch your steps." Suhayla warned.

I carefully alighted the vehicle in the heels they forced me to wear. One of them took my hand and lead us to an unknown destination.

I heard shuffling and whispering. The girls left me alone. "Hello!" I yelled. I was still blindfolded so I couldn't see anything.

"Guys! Can I take this off now?"

"One minute Jaw." A voice yelled back.

A minute later, the same voice asked me to remove the blindfold. What I saw in front of me made me gasp.

Oh my Allah!!!
