9: Fear of Failure
Throughout my life, failure is one of the feelings I've feared the most. I believe failure is a feeling everyone fears. It's nearly impossible to avoid feeling this way, since the fear of failure is a feeling we learn about at a young age. We must not fail on our schoolwork, so we understand the material and succeed in the world. We must not fail to create and maintain relationships with people, since if we did we would become outcasts.
In addition, this fear of failure is present when we carry out the Great Commission. Many people worry about if they are fulfilling the Great Commission properly. People can become nervous when they have to find the right words to say when sharing the Word of Jesus. The dreadful, "what if" questions always come to our minds, such as, "Are my actions and words making an impact? or "Am I doing my best in fulfilling the Great Commission?"
However, when we focus too much on this fear, we forget about Jesus, who always knows the right path for us. Even if you feel like you aren't doing well in fulfilling the Great Commission, simply trust Jesus to guide you down His path.
Prevent yourself from being the judge of whether you are doing Jesus's work correctly. Let Jesus be the judge of how you do His work.
Jesus is a perfect judge. He knows the right words you can say, in any situation. He knows which actions you can take to fulfill your task. He knows all of this before it happens. Remember to open your mind to His guidance, since He won't steer you wrong. If you don't accept His guidance and hear His words, Jesus cannot help you. Don't rely on yourself to plan your words and actions. We are imperfect and will fall short of our goal without Jesus. Trust Jesus to guide you when you teach others about Him and His Word.
"And the heavens proclaim His righteousness, For God Himself is judge."
(Psalm 50:6)
The reason for this chapter came from a recent experience Jesus allowed me to go through. Jesus gave me the opportunity to teach two of my homosexual acquaintances about their sin and how to repent it. The three of us had discussed this topic for two weeks. Through this time, Jesus provided me the intellect to disprove many of their arguments and I felt that I was making progress in helping them.
However, one day they decided to stop talking to me about it. They didn't want to listen to me, so I didn't go any further. Jesus had taught me earlier to know when to stop, since forcing anyone to listen would not work. I felt disappointed and let down, so I talked to Jesus about why I failed to carry out His word. I believed that those two weeks were meaningless since I didn't succeed for Jesus. I had beaten myself up for it since I thought I didn't ask Jesus for enough assistance.
But Jesus responded to my confusion and fear with his wisdom. He taught me that I couldn't truly know if I had made a difference, since I couldn't see the thoughts of the people I talked with. My job was to simply plant seeds and trust Jesus to let them grow. I had learned to stop worrying about the outcome and to focus on teaching with Jesus to lead me. Now I knew to rely more on Jesus to help me teach, since no matter what occurs at the end of my teachings, Jesus would see it grow and blossom if I trusted Him.
Remember this when you think you failed as a teacher of the Word of Jesus. Only Jesus knows if you succeeded or not. Therefore, you cannot judge yourself as successful or a failing follower since only Jesus can see the thoughts of those you teach. By trusting Jesus to guide you throughout your teachings, you are destined to find success, even when you do not realize it immediately. By teaching with Jesus as your guide, those you teach will be saved, whether it takes a few days, a few months, or a few years. But He can't help you without your trust. Remember Proverbs 3:6, "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
(Proverbs 3:5-6)
Allow Jesus to help you plant seeds, but trust Jesus to grow them.
If you learned a lot from this part, please share what you learned with someone you know. Or someone you don't know. Simply share what you learned with whoever you can. Thanks!
