Sting's Present

I'm just going to tell you now: I don't know if Frosch is a girl or boy, so I'll make him a boy.  Hope you like this chapter!!

~Rogue's P.O.V.~

I looked around for Sting and Lector.  We had stayed in a hotel after leaving the market.  "Sting!  Where are you??" I yelled across Sting's room.  We had separate bedrooms, but it seemed like Sting nor Lector was there.  "Hey Frosch, did you find them?" I asked my exceed partner when he came towards me.  He sadly shook his head.  "I wonder where they could be.." I mumbled out loud.

"Fro wonders too..." Frosch nodded.  I sighed and ran a hair through my head. Where did that idiot of a partner run off to? I was about to go back to our room when something dawned on me.

"Frosch, where are the presents???" I asked slowly, starting to panic.  Frosch blinked and looked around.

"Fro doesn't know."  Not good.  Really not good.  We had brought the presents from over the years, and they were all missing!

I was about to curse with every colorful language I knew when the hallway door suddenly slammed open. "Hey!!  We're back!" Sting slurred his words as he made his grand entrance.  It was obvious that he had been drinking, and his eyes were red and puffy.  Had he been crying?

"S-sorry for being late.." Lector struggled to say as he was trying to carry Sting with his small angelic wings.

"Where have you guys been?" I asked, my eyebrows twitching with annoyance.   "You're 2 hours late!"

"Oh, we went to Fairy Hills to talk to Lexi," Sting answered drunkenly.  "Then we dropped off the presents and got just one drink."  I raised my eyebrows at Lector who mouthed "Waaaay more than one."

"You dropped off the presents?" I asked in the nicest tone possible.  We agreed that we would do that together, but from the looks of it, the information he got from Lexi was not good, so I had to have some sympathy.  Sting nodded.

"Yup!" he replied cheerfully.  I furrowed my brows in pity.  I couldn't help but feel bad for him.

"Well, we need to get back to Sabertooth," I said as I took one of my friend's arms around my shoulder.  And hopefully he'll sober up before we arrive, I mentally wished.

~Jessie's P.O.V.~

A huge yawn escaped from my lips as I sat up from my bed and stretched my arms.  I didn't get much sleep yesterday, huh.  When I saw the sun's ray through my window, I decided to just go to Fairy Tail. Maybe that'll get my head out of my thoughts.. I slipped on whatever clothes looked fine and ate..I don't even remember what I had for breakfast, but all I know is that I had something. I didn't even call for Lexi to wake up, but she was already up and ready to go when I got down to the ground floor.

"You're up early," I commented with a tired but amused expression.

"Yeah, I uh, couldn't sleep," she answered, rubbing her furry arm. I didn't ask her for details as that's what happened to me as well, so we both silently agreed not to ask each other. Instead of asking me, Lexi looked down and raised one eyebrow over the other. She then glanced over me, hesitating for a second before asking, "You, uh, going to put that on?" I blinked, looking down at my hands and realizing that my gold angel-winged heart-shaped locket was dangling from my hands.

"Oh," I said bluntly. "Uh, yeah, guess so." I pinch the other side of the necklace with my other hand's fingers and bring it to the back of my neck. I wonder why I brought it, I thought to myself as I fastened it. Lexi and I then walked to Fairy Tail in silence.

~❧Mini Timeskip to Fairy Tail❧~

By the time we got there, men were drinking, women were talking, Mira was cleaning dishes, and Natsu and Gray were already fighting.  I rubbed my eyes to get rid of the persisting drowsiness I still felt from lack of sleep and went to one of the bar stools.  Lexi lazily followed behind me and sat on the bar counter top.

        "Morning Jessie!" greeted Mira.

        "Mm, morning," I said sleepily.

"Some very special things arrived late yesterday just for you!" she announced with a knowing smile.  My eyes immediately popped wide open and I turned my head towards her, all traces of fatigue gone.

"Like what?" I  asked curiously. Lexi also turned her body around to face the inside of the bar, her curiosity peaked almost as much as mine.  The whitette's smile only widened at my question before she left the bar, and a couple seconds later, she came back with a stack-load of presents.

"Whoa.." Lexi and I both gaped in unison.  She placed them all on the bar counter, the huge pile of presents making a loud 'thud' sound as they were placed on the wooden counter.

        "Here you go!" Mira beamed.

"Uh, thanks..?" I said reluctantly.  How am I going to get this home?

"Whoaa, so many presents!" marveled Wendy as she came up to me.

"Wow, who are they from?" Lucy asked as she too came up to the pile of presents.

"I have no clue," I answered without looking at either of them. Instead, I found myself still staring at the huge stack of presents that towered over me.

"Need help to carry them?" Erza mysteriously popped out of nowhere and asked.

"Uhh, sure I guess..." I answered with hesitance.  Almost immediately, all three girls grabbed a pile of presents.  They complied quickly.. I sweatdropped.  Deciding that it was wrong to let them do all the work, I took the remaining presents.

"Uh, I'm just going to cheer you guys on.." Lexi sweatdropped, using her Aera Magic to sprout wings and follow us as we all went back to my room.

~❧Back to Jessie's Room in Fairy Hills❧~

Lexi did the honors of unlocking my room's door.  Wendy, Erza, and I set them down on the floor, while Lucy's spirit Taurus set her share of presents for her (her arms had gotten tired a minute after carrying them). I let out a sigh and rubbed my wrists. "Who's it from Jessie-san??" Wendy was anxious to know who was it from since we started walking. Her eyes sparkled with innocent curiosity as she practically jumped up and down in excitement.

"Give me a second!" I chuckled as I saw her eagerness.

"H-hey J-Jessie.." It was then that I heard Lexi stammer something.  I turned my head towards the source of her voice to see that she was looking at one of the tags on a present.

        "Yeah?" I answered.

"You might want to take a look at this.."  I tilted my head in confusion, but walked over to her, taking the present in her hand and scanning over the tag.  My pupils dilated and my mouth went dry as soon as I read the name written in ink on the small slip of paper and a loud gasp had inadvertently escaped my lips.

"Who is it from?" Lucy asked, her eyebrows raised with amusement. I was reluctant to utter the answer out loud, and my vocal cords seemed to have stopped working for a second. I slowly opened my mouth and muttered the words I never thought I'd have to say again.

        "Sting and Sabertooth."

Silence immediately filled my small apartment, signaling that everyone was probably as surprised as I was.

"S-seriously?" Wendy sputtered, breaking the short silence.  I slowly nodded.

"B-but this was in the year x786, the year after..." I stuttered then trailed off, not wanting to finish it.

"...after we got kicked out." Lexi whispered, finishing off my thought.  My head tilted down and my bangs covered both of my eyes now.  I waited for everyone's shocked questions, but they never came.  Instead, I felt a warm hand on my shoulder.

"Well, are you going to open it?" Erza asked in a soft tone.  I look at her with surprise, but then nod and carefully unwrap the present.  The wrapping paper was white with yellow sparkles on it.  Inside it was a blue box and a note attached to it. I read the note out loud to myself.

Dear Jessie,

Happy 14th birthday. I wanted to write this to say sorry.  I...might've gone too far, but I wanted to show you that I can be strong too.  Or, I guess that's an excuse, because I can't really remember why I did what I did..? I tried looking for you, but you weren't anywhere.  I'm truly sorry and I hope you'll come back to Sabertooth.  Maybe the new Master will accept you back?

~From Sting, Rogue, Lector, and Frosch

I would've cried, but no tears would escape my eyes, probably because I already cried all my tears.  I just emptily stared at the note that was gripped in my hands.  I was pretty sure Sting wrote this; it had his handwriting, and it was in first person.

"Would it be alright if you guys leave us for now?" Lexi whispered, knowing that I really didn't want them to stay, even if they are my comrades. The girls nodded, understanding, and left my room.  Lexi hovered above me and laid on my head.  "Are you going to open the box?" she asked softly.  I blearily blinked and nodded, slowly setting the note down.  I then lifted the blue box towards me.  I slowly lifted the lid off of it, and inside was a crude drawing of the Sabertooth guild mark.  By the looks of it, it was probably drawn by Frosch (He was known for his crude drawings).  I couldn't help but grin.  We spent the rest of the afternoon going through all the notes and presents from over the years.  Starting on the year x787, Sting and Rogue gave separate presents.  Some presents contained spells I had already learned and some of them were just notes, but I didn't mind. The more I opened, the more I started to feel just a tad better. These presents showed that they cared; that they remembered me. Somehow, knowing that, my heart started to feel less and less heavy, as if a weight was slowly being lifted from my chest.

"Okay, here's the last one," I said as I took the final present.  It was sort of small, had a beautiful golden bow on top, and the wrapping paper was silver with golden suns scattered on it.  Out of all of them, this had to be the prettiest and probably the latest.  On top of the present was a note and a tag that read To Jessie, from Sting. Year x791.  This year's present huh? I slowly unfold the note and read it.

Dear Jessie,

I know you don't forgive me for what I did, and I honestly don't expect you to anymore.  Knowing that you're safe and happy is all I need.  I know you don't want me in your life anymore, and I've always realized that I can't beg for forgiveness, but I did want to give you one last gift, before I disappear out of your life. So, guess this is goodbye Jessie.

                                ~Sting Eucliffe

I stare at the paper, frowning.  Goodbye?  Is that what I really want?  I thought in my head.  I carefully untie the golden ribbon and unwrap the wrapping paper. My eyes widen and Lexi's jaw drops beside me.

Unwrapping the gift revealed the most beautiful box I had ever seen.  It was covered in purple velvet, and had golden string wrapped around the edges.  It was the sort of box that a wedding ring would be in.  Is it a wedding ring?  Almost reluctantly, yet anxiously, I slowly open the box.  I gasp.

"N-no way.." Lexi muttered in awe with a voice barely above a whisper.  I shakily take the hair clip and examine it.  It was a sparkly silver and looked exactly like it had when I first remember seeing it, but it had Sabertooth's and Fairy Tail's mark on it.

        "H-he remembered..."

~❧Flashback- 7 years ago❧~

"So pretty..!" I beamed as I pressed my face against the glass window.

"Come on Jessie, we have to get back to the guild!" Sting whined.  He stood beside me and looked through the window of the jewelry store as well.  "What are you even looking at?"

"It's such a beautiful hair clip!" I said pointing to the silver hair clip resting on a podium.

"But it's so expensive..." muttered Sting as he saw the price tag.  "3,000,000 jewels!!  I thought you don't even like hair clips!"

"Yeah but it says that you can engrave whatever mark you want on it!" I countered, puffing out my cheeks.

"Well, your birthday is coming up, so maybe I could get it for you one day, If I'm a billionaire," he muttered that last part.  Even though I knew he was joking and that he could never afford it, I smiled.

"Yeah, that'd be great!" I grinned.

"HAH?! Are you actually expecting me to get it?!?" Sting's jaw drops. I burst out laughing and shake my head.

"Haha, you're always so gullible Sting," I teased. "Nah, I'm joking, I don't want you to go bankrupt, even if it's such a beautiful clip~"

"You're so mean Jessie," Sting puffed out his cheeks, "but..I guess maybe one day, if you really--"

"Sting!  Jessie!  Hurry up, or we'll miss the train back!" Rogue suddenly yelled at the two of us.

"Hai!" we both yelled back, suddenly remembering that he came with us on the mission.

"We shouldn't let him wait too long, or he'll be cranky on the train," I joked, getting ready to run. I smirked and asked, "You up for a race?" At first Sting looked like he wanted to say something, but then a toothy smirk curled onto his lips.

"Hell yeah you bet I am!"  he answered and rushed off before I could even begin a countdown.

"Hey, that's cheating!" I yell back before sprinting after the blond.
