Final Chapter: Midnight Show

The light from a full moon illuminates the twilight sky on the cusp of the Cerulean Cape. Oddish and Hoothoot, just a few of the nocturnal creatures around at this time, roam the taller grass off to the side. Nugget Bridge and the maze of trees on the way to Cerulean Cape is uncharacteristically clear of trainers. The water that's as clear as the sky reflects ripples of that full moon.

If only the given circumstances aren't what they are, perhaps Fabian could find the serene beauty of it.

Fabian's steps crunch in the grass as he approaches the clearing. His shoulders hang loose as his depressed mood gets the better of his posture. A gust of wind blows, sending a chill from the top of his short shaven, buzz cut head down to the soles of his feet. Despite blending in with the scene around him with his dark jacket and sweatpants, he can't help but feel like the spotlight—in this case moonlight—is directing to him.

Out of a shadow Fabian didn't know exists, a bulky figure steps out into the open. He recognizes it immediately. I mean, who wouldn't?

"So you're here. Finally," Nnamdi states deeply. Fabian crosses his arms as he answers his partner.

"I'm not sure why you're even here," Fabian replies. It doesn't make any sense to him. Why on this day at this time?

"It's because I called you out," his partner states firmly.

"Yeah, I got that part. I meant why you're here and I'm here for reasons unknown."

"Isn't it obvious, Fabian? It's for a midnight show."

"Damn it, Nnamdi! What the hell is this midnight show crap?! This mysteriousness and all these cryptic actions...this isn't like you!" Fabian shouts, probably a little too loudly. The two fall silent as they alert to the surroundings. Scurries of the night life rustle the grass around them. Luckily for them, it seems whomever is in the cottage nearby doesn't react.

"Fabian, I regret to inform you this but...she broke up with you," Nnamdi states.

"You say it like I'm an idiot! Of course she broke up with me! I was probably the second person to find out! Her being the first!" Fabian roars. His words echo in the surrounding mountains, keeping the reverberations around the two of them like a tornado. Fabian's body shakes both from his sheer rage that spiked quickly. Nnamdi flinches from the repeating voice of his partner drowning him inside the cape.

"And despite it, you refuse to move on. You have daydreams about her. You think about her. You can't get her out of your head," Nnamdi explains. Suddenly, Fabian charges at his partner and grasps him by the front of the shirt. With one fist full of anger and the other full of navy blue cloth, Fabian erupts. His face turns red as he grits his teeth.

"What's it to you?! I love that woman! She is, or at least was, the light of my life and career! And she probably always will be! She's so goddamn amazing, you wouldn't believe how lucky I felt to be able to date a woman like her! Fun personality! Attractive! Disciplined with her work! And you don't understand a thing!"

For a moment, there's a hanging silence. Neither move a muscle except for Fabian's puffing exhales that could rival an Exploud. The moonlight spotlights the two of them at the climax, as if they're part of a show on stage, befitting of the term midnight show. After a second, Fabian relinquishes his grip, thrusting his partner to one side in a last-ditch effort of anger.

"That's nice to know," Nnamdi simply replies. Fabian turns away from the man he shares his shift with. He can't begin to describe how much he despises this "midnight show" he knows Nnamdi is putting on. He also despises how much he knows his partner is absolutely right in every word he says, with the cold, hard truth slicing through his being like a Scizor slashing with X-Scissor.

"Is that it, Nnamdi? Are you just here to shame my actions as of late? I can't believe you," Fabian retorts with seething anger. He crosses his arms once again as he stares up into the sky. It's a coincidence his eyes went that way since any other direction away from his partner would suffice for him.

"I know what you want," Nnamdi says, "I'm gonna take you to a midnight show tonight."

The cryptic phrase doesn't faze Fabian, as he still can't stand even the sight of Nnamdi. That is, until Nnamdi keeps going.

"If you can keep a secret," he continues, then points to a squad car in the distance. Presumably, it's the one he used to get here before Fabian.

"I got a blanket in the backseat on my mind, and a little place that sits beneath the sky," Nnamdi finishes. Refusing to look directly at his partner, Fabian's focus darts to the car. That's when he realizes it.

"Don't worry, Fabian. I took care of that nagging problem you have. Or, more appropriately, had," Nnamdi says to him. Immediately, Fabian dashes towards the issued car and sticks his head in through the window to the backseat, which is conveniently rolled down. His eyes widen in shock, his mouth open like a Loudred. A grim sight beholds him.

There she is. Cerulean City's Officer Jenny. In an inescapable sleep. Her face is towards him, but it seems as though she turned her face to speak to him.

But no one heard her cry.

Fabian dashes to the front door and pulls it full force, swinging it open. He sees it: the keys are still in the ignition. Can he still save her? Is it too late to head to the nearest emergency room?

"Drive faster!" Nnamdi shouts as Fabian looks straight ahead into the darkness of the road ahead. But despite his effort, he can't slam the gas pedal. He can't muster the force necessary to attempt to save her life force. If only his ability was an Electivire's Motor Drive.

"I know there's a hope, but there's too many people trying to help me cope," Fabian mutters to himself, the tears welling up to like a Smokescreen to his vision. His body shudders as the thought of his life without her just became a reality. His palms grip the steering wheel firmly even though he's going nowhere fast anytime soon.

Fabian turns his head to try to gain his composure as he looks over to the backseat to see her again.

"You got a real short skirt..." he mumbles, seeing her in her uniform and falling into an otherworldly trance as if hypnotized by a Mismagius. "I wanna look up, look up, look up, yeah."

Fabian closes his eyes as he regains his senses. He lost his sanity for a moment, but he knows one thing. Jenny is gone. There's no point denying it. Especially since she's in the backseat without a gasp of life left in her.

Nnamdi approaches the car, his steps crunching in the grass, as he stops near the driver side's door. He knocks on the window's glass with an offputting, calm smile on his face. Fabian rolls the window down reluctantly for Nnamdi.

"We were just in time. Let me take a little off your mind," he tells his partner. Fabian realizes what this all is. It's a liberation. His partner is freeing him from the insanity in his head. All the dark thoughts that could Torment him worse than a Dark-type Pokemon are slipping away.

"There's something in my head, somewhere in the back, saying We were just a good thing, we were such a good thing." Fabian says aloud. He looks back to his partner, who already opened the door to the backseat where Jenny lies.

Fabian mumbles it to his partner. "Make it go away without a word, but promise me you'll stay and fix these things I've heard."

Nnamdi nods silently as he pulls Jenny out of the car. He heaves her over his left shoulder and carries her towards the water's edge. This is where Jenny dies tonight. There was no car that transported her here. There was no Fabian here. The only one here was Jenny and whomever the later investigators decide is the guilty party.

Nnamdi tosses her slumped body down like a sack of Soft Sand. She crumples into the contortion the officer figures he'll find her soon enough. She lies face down—her nametag out of sight, out of mind.

"Oh, make it go away and drive faster, Fabian," Nnamdi says to himself. A crashing Cerulean Cape tide can't hide a guilty girl. Especially with his jealous heart that started with her gloss and curls. Nnamdi took her breath beneath the chandelier of Kanto stars and atmosphere.

And watched her disappear into the midnight show.

Nnamdi looks off and sees his squad car far away from here. He can walk home. He has no one looking for him at this time of night. No one cares about him except for Fabian. There's no way he's going to let anyone change that.

As he steps away, he hopes to himself that Fabian can avoid scrutiny. He knows he can crack under enough pressure. He doesn't have the strength to keep the crime to himself for very long under the spotlight.

If you can keep a secret, he thinks. Well, I can keep it a secret if you can keep a secret.

With that, his work is only halfway done. The only thing left to do is make sure it doesn't get out. It was a midnight show for two, not for two hundred. Any more audience members would spoil the chance of him living his life the way he wanted.
