Chapter 2: Jenny was a Friend of Mine

Looker and Duke sit in silence as they await their next interrogation session. There is a certain discomforting air that comes with being a crime fighter. One of them is when you have to apprehend those you wish you don't have to. In the end, the hardest thing to do is fight for a blind justice. People have those they care about. And there are those they wish they didn't have the eye of the law scrutinizing. Whether it be friend or family, people want to protect those they care about. The law helps do that, but without currying favor for anyone in particular. It's absolute in the cruelest way possible.

"Is this the right room?" a voice outside the door calls out. The two detectives both look up and see their newest prime suspect being escorted into the room. Both him and the officer next to him wear the same colors. The only problem is that it isn't a coincidence that they share the same shade of blue.

"Come in," Looker states. Emerging from outside is the one and only Officer Fabian Davant. Fellow law enforcer and initial officer on scene, the man himself is now in the hot seat. He sits down across from the two detectives in the same spot Bill was in before.

"Hey guys! It's been too long!" he beams. Looker raises a cynical eyebrow while Duke taps his finger on the table. Fabian waits in vain for a response he's never going to receive.

"Looker! How's the international job? I hear you've visited everywhere! First Sinnoh, then Unova, and now all over the place! You're the face of us boys in blue!" Fabian says gleefully. He then turns to Duke with a smile.

"And Duke! Visiting us all the way over here in Kanto? Here I thought the famous detective himself couldn't leave his own little bubble of a world far away from here!" he continues, nodding happily. His teeth shimmer despite how dark the atmosphere is. The two detectives look at each other and shrug. They've seen it all. No officer is going to use cheap psychological tricks on them any time soon.

"Officer Davant...you are the initial investigating party on the recent homicide case involving Officer Jenny. Could you please be a little more professional?" Looker asks him. Fabian leans back in his chair and crosses his arms. He tips his hat on his head and nods slightly.

"All right then. Let's get down to business. You want to ask for my insight on the case! Well never fear, Officer Davant is here!" he announces happily. Looker rolls his eyes as Duke sighs. Neither of them enjoy sitting through something like this, especially with Fabian's attitude.

"...sure, we'll go with that. Why don't you start by telling us what you know?" Looker proposes, producing the notebook again from his inside pocket. He flips past his reminder to turn off the oven to a blank page as Fabian ponders over his knowledge.

"Well, let me see...apparently the victim of this case is our one and only Officer Jenny," Fabian starts, rubbing his chin in thought.

"One and only?" Duke interjects with a raised eyebrow. He knows there's at least one Jenny in every city of Kanto, which contradicts Fabian's statement. With a confident grin, Duke realizes the inconsistency in the testimony of the suspect...

"Absolutely. Despite having many identical siblings, Cerulean's Officer Jenny is one of a kind. She's basically the idol of the police force. She's the cutest of all of her sisters in my opinion!" Fabian beams as he nods at his assessment. The contradiction Duke had fizzles out after he pressed for more information. Of course it isn't that simple.

Or is it?

"Cutest you say?" Looker inquires, putting his arm across Duke's torso out of sight under the table. He knows that jumping at the first hole in a testimony is just the beginning. You have to dig deeper and have your suspect tell you information you already know. That way, it's undeniable. Looker knows the real trick is getting that person to say what you want them to say.

"Absolutely!" Fabian nods.

"I see...care to elaborate your relationship with the, using your words, cutest Officer Jenny aka the idol of the police force a little more?" Looker asks, leaning forward towards Fabian, his left shoulder on the table as the light above them flickers.

"Oh yeah. We were pretty good friends. She was cute and kind and a great officer! I mean, what kind of guy wouldn't want to be friends with such an awesome person? I know I would!" Fabian nods, looking at both of Duke and Looker. They both nod in undeniable agreement, despite their hesitation. Looker flips through the folder that contains the new information that creates a lead in the case. It all starts to fall into place.

"Yes...our sources say you and the victim were in a romantic relationship?" Looker asks. Fabian's expression of ease and relaxation melts into a deep concern. A button that shouldn't have been pushed. Yet despite Looker knowing something like this would happen, it was only a matter of time before the topic arose. There is no way that the interrogation would avoid the topic.

"That is...true," Fabian agrees. Looker leans in and repeats himself, but with a distinct difference.

"Yes...you and the victim were in a romantic relationship. And, as of recent, it wasn't as pretty as you claim she was. And our sources say it didn't end because of her death," Looker continues. Fabian's chair squeaks as he shifts in his spot slightly. For a moment, there is dead silence in the room. It's so quiet that each of the three men could hear each pulsing heartbeat of the other.

"Perhaps it was the other way around?" Duke suggests, rolling with Looker's momentum. "Perhaps her death was due to the end of the relationship?"

"That's enough!" Fabian shouts, slamming both hands hard on the table, breaking the deduction process of the two investigators. The bang echoes in the empty room, with the lamp hanging from above shifting slightly from the vibration. Fabian's fuming breaths are the only audible noise to all three officers. The force of fury from the man clad in blue seems to envelop him in an intense pressure.

"Care to explain yourself then? Perhaps starting with where you were the night of the incident?" Duke asks. With a grumble, Fabian realizes the position he's in. For once, he's on the wrong side of the table. He isn't suspecting this time—he's the suspect.

There's a moment in time when you realize that there's only one path to take. It may not be the path you want to take. It also probably will cause unimaginable pain and suffering. The worst part has to be someone else wants you to take that path more than you do. In the end, you realize it's the only path to take for a reason, and resisting will just add to the pain that you can't escape.

Fabian sighs as he resigns to his position with an explanation. "We took a walk that night, but it wasn't the same."

Looker starts to scribble in his notebook, detailing the testimony of Fabian's account of what happened the dreadful night of the incident.

"We had a fight on Cerulean's promenade out in the rain," Fabian continues, "She said she loved me, but she had somewhere to go."

Fabian pauses in his account of the details. Looker and Duke both lean towards him as he looks away.

"And then I left her at the Cape. I didn't do it. I swear," Fabian says to them finally. He crosses his arms as he says no more. The two investigators both mull over the new details they have. So Davant is one of the last people with the victim. He also has a motive and the opportunity. This case is as open and shut as a Poké Ball can be.

Looker looks up at Davant with a raised eyebrow. Despite how simple and straightforward this all seems, it's just too good to be true. Even though every angle doesn't need scrutiny, maybe pieces of the truth lie somewhere hidden in those angles out of sight.

"Can anyone else vouch for your testimony just now?" Looker asks. Davant chuckles lightly to himself at the question.

"That, is a no. No one else other than Jenny was with me that night. And, in the end, I didn't kill her. I loved—no, scratch that—I love her. Even though she's dead. It doesn't matter. She is a fantastic person, dead or alive. And that will always be my opinion of her," Fabian explains. He scratches the back of his neck as he spills the words out of his mouth of his undying love for the officer. It'd be a novel idea if only Jenny could also share that undying attribute.

"Can you tell us a little more about you and Jenny the night of the incident?" Duke asks. Looker gives him a nudge to the ribs, objecting to the press for more information. Despite this, Duke eyes Fabian, like a Taillow ready to prey on a Wurmple. There were more Geodudes he didn't want to leave unturned.

"Seriously? Haven't I told you enough?" Fabian asks with a shrug.

"I believe we are the ones who are asking the questions here, officer," Looker replies with an intimidating gruff. Fabian winces at the striking statement, and hesitantly divulges.

"She couldn't scream while I held her close since I swore I'd never let her go," he replies cryptically, grimacing at his word choice. He adds on a small quip immediately afterwards.

"Look, there ain't no motive for this crime. Jenny was a friend of mine."
The reasoning behind Fabian's statement is, at the very least, objective. To him, he has no reason to kill the woman he loves. To the other two law enforcers, it's the very reason he would kill the woman he loves. In the end, it's a matter of perspective.

But perspective didn't matter in the eyes of the truth.

The two investigators murmur inaudible words to each other, piecing together the bits of information to try to attain this elusive truth they seek out. To their surprise, Fabian clears his throat conspicuously, gaining their attention. He crosses his arms as he mentions a very important consideration.

"I know my rights. I've been here all day and it's time for me to go. So let me know if it's all right," he says to the two of them. "I just can't take this, I swear I told you the truth. She kicked and screamed while I held her close, because I swore I never let her go."

Fabian then follows up with one last statement. "Tell me what you wanna know."

The answer is obvious. The undeniable truth. What happened to Jenny that night of her demise. What was the cause? Who was the cause? Why did it end up the way it did?

The two investigators sit for a moment. If Davant is to be trusted, is there some sort of integrity to his testimony? Did he really have no motive for the crime since Jenny was a friend of his? If that's the case, who killed Jenny? And why?

Suddenly, a wave of realization washes over Duke. Pieces he thought fell into one place actually fall into another. It's in the case file regarding Davant. He has the information, but what conclusions he drew were certainly correct, yet at the same time wrong conclusions. The connection of the two officers, who was the one who gave them this information? Just a collective source?

Or perhaps, all the facts he thought meant something mean a whole different thing. It's all just misconstrued in a perspective under the assumption Duke and Looker mistakenly made initially. Why was Davant assumed he was the killer? He was, at the very least, involved with the incident.

And perhaps that's all it is.

Duke scans the file on the officer before him. In plain black typeset, the source of the information involving Jenny and Davant and their connection is led back to one person. Who would have thought it was such an elaborate set-up?

The only question Duke had to answer
was why.

"Umm, I kinda have to go. I do have a job, yknow. My partner McKinnie is probably worried about my lack of presence for so long," he states. Duke leans over the counter with a slight smirk on his face towards Davant. He hovers his mouth near Fabian's head for a quick moment.

And then Duke whispers in his ear. "I know what you're doing here."

Davant's eyes widen as he abruptly replies. "Look, I told you before and I'll say it again. There ain't no motive for this crime. After all, Jenny was a friend of mine!"

Duke then nudges Looker, who nods in agreement. The two officers both clasp their hands in triumph and look to Davant.

"You're right. You didn't kill Jenny," Looker says.

"But we know who did. And we can take a pretty confident guess as to why. You may not be a killer, but you're definitely involved," Duke adds on. Fabian slides back in his chair at the statement. Immediately after, as if he were using ExtremeSpeed, Looker follows up.

"This questioning is over."
