RWBY Volume 6 Chapter 3: The Lost Fable
So before I begin I just wanted to make a note of something that was pointed out to me. Lil' Miss Malachite is based on Little Miss Muffet. And Salem being in the tower ties into the fairytale Pyrrha talked about in volume 3. The Girl in the Tower. But anyway after that insane episode last week I'm sure things will only calm down from here right? Right..... wrong. As always I'm putting a SPOILER warning. If you don't want to be spoiled I suggest leaving and coming back later. If you don't care let's get into it
So this episode begins right where the last one left off. Jinn is telling the story of Salem in her tower. So Salem was locked in her tower by her father but all she wanted was to be free. Also every human at this point in time could use magic unlike the people of current remnant.
After a while Salem is rescued by a warrior named Ozma, who would later become Ozpin. After he rescues her the two fall in love. But instead of the story ending there with happily ever after Ozma becomes very sick and dies.
Salem then decides to visit the domain of light to ask the god of light to bring Ozma back. However he says no because life and death are in a delicate balance and that Salem should let him rest. Salem then screams that it's not fair that he's letting her love stay dead and she goes to the domain of darkness. But she doesn't tell the god of darkness that she saw his older brother first. The god of darkness grants her wish and brings Ozma back. Except right then the god of light comes and tells the god of darkness that he must undo what he did and kill Ozma again. What follows next is a montage of the gods bringing back and killing Ozma back and forth. The whole time Ozma's disintegrating into ashes and I couldn't help but wish he would go "Salem I don't feel so good." Anyway the god of light exposes Salem's lie and the god of darkness agrees to return Ozma to death, which he does.
Salem then screams that she wants Ozma back but the god of light sends her back to his domain and into his fountain of life. This makes her immortal. As punishment for what she did Salem now must live forever until she understands life and death. Then she can be with her love. Also I just want to point this out that the god of light calls what she did "selfishness and arrogance" but I don't think it was either. All she wanted was her love back. She was a grieving woman who made a bad choice, I don't think making her immortal was the right thing to do. But that's just my opinion.
Next we have a sad flash forward of Salem trying many attempts to kill herself including impaling herself with a sword but it doesn't work. But she realizes that the gods were able to be tricked which means they aren't perfect like the people think. She decides to tell everyone this so that they'll decide to turn on the gods. She hopes that if the gods aren't the rulers of the world anymore then her curse will be taken away.
She goes from kingdom to kingdom telling the rulers about how she was immortal and convinced them that if they were to destroy the gods then they could have their powers for themselves. When the people go to attack the gods all that happens is though is the god of darkness destroys every human on earth except for Salem. The gods then say that they will learn from their first failure at creating the world since everyone ended up turning on them. And an interesting tidbit is the god of light says that the world is now a remnant of what it once was. Hmmmm So that's where the name came from. Also as the god of darkness flies away he slams into the moon causing it to break into pieces which explains why it looks the way it does now.
Salem is now extremely upset over what she's done and decides that she wants to die. So she goes to the realm of darkness and jumps into a Grimm pool hoping it will take away her curse and kill her. All it does though is take away any humanity she had left and make her a creature of pure destruction much like a Grimm. It also changes her appearance into what we know it as today.
We then cut to Ozma as he is meeting with the god of light in between the land of dead and living. The god of light tells him about what happened to humanity and that soon humans will be on the earth again. However they will only be a fraction of what they once were as they will not possess magic nor will they be able to communicate with the gods. He then shows Ozma the relics he's created, which is a lamp (knowledge), a torch (creation), a crown (choice) and a sword (destruction). If all four relics are brought together then they'll summon the gods of light and dark to judge humanity. If the humans have learned to live in harmony then the gods will remain in the world and the humans will become whole again. If not then the world will be destroyed forever. At first Ozma refuses since he believes Salem is no longer alive so he wants to go back to the afterlife to be with her. But after the god of light tells him that Salem is still alive Ozma agrees to the task.
We then cut to Ozma in a new body not knowing who he is or what's going on. But after he sees a man about to be killed by a Grimm he steps in to save him. He's then shown walking around various parts of the world trying to understand this new world. He also begins to hear about the only other person who can perform magic. A woman known as the witch. When Ozma finds the witch, which obviously is Salem, the two immediately know who the other one is. They talk, Salem keeping her part in the end of the world a secret and Ozma keeping his task a secret. Salem then convinces him that they should be the gods of the world and use their magic to mold the world into whatever they want. Ozma agrees.
Cut to a bit later and Salem and Ozma have gained a group of followers which later turns into a kingdom. They become king and queen and are worshipped like gods. They also have four daughters, who if I may say, look like the maidens. I mean look at them,
Anyway sometime later Salem is talking about how great their kingdom is running by having people be their followers and wiping out anyone who opposes them, this causes Ozma to finally tell Salem everything about his task. Salem however tells him that none of that matters. Just then their oldest daughter comes in and shows them that she can perform magic. This gives Salem an idea and she decides to replace all the current humans with their own bloodline since they'll be able to perform magic like the humans of old. Ozma disagrees and tries to escape with his daughters but Salem finds them and kills them all.
To end the episode we have a montage of Ozpin's lives and his attempts at uniting humanity despite knowing that it's impossible with Salem around. He also keeps using the lamp to ask questions about the relics locations and powers. His final question though is a rather upsetting one, he asks "how do I destroy Salem?" But the answer is "you can't."
