[Chapter Four] I'm Not A Killer
Recap (You can skip if you still remember)
"My name is Jane. I used to be your... neighbour." she said, pausing briefly at the neighbour part.
I played it cool, and looked sideways, "Jane, huh. Yeah, I've seen you around," I muttered casually, stealing a quick glance at her, "can you tell me what happened to you?" I asked, gesturing to the cuts and scrapes detailing her entire body.
She glared daggers at me, "You happened to me, Jeff." her sudden coldness felt like it chilled the air surrounding me.
It sent a shiver down my spine.
"What?" I asked with a worried tone,
--------------------------------------
"What did I do?" I asked her, furrowing my brows.
I didn't understand. Jane, a girl from my class appears out of nowhere, and says 'I' happened to her. What is that even supposed to mean? Is she saying I'm the one that hurt her?
"I didn't-" but she cut me off.
Jane took a deep breath, and stared at me, "Listen, Jeff. I'm from the future. Precisely four weeks ahead." she explained calmly, not losing eye-contact.
Woah, woah, woah. Now she's claiming she's from the future? I'm not buying this one bit.
"Sure. Sure you are, Jane. Are you going to tell me my existence is interrupting the flow of time and space? Please do." is what I wanted to say.
Instead, it went something like this, "Okay, and why are you here? I mean, why are you wasting time at my house?" I began, only to be cut off again.
...This girl must have a death wish.
"You become a murderer in four weeks time. ...You killed my family!" she shouted, tears forming in her eyes.
It sounded like she was trying to remain calm, but all the anger came toppling out. I only saw Jane at school, she was definitely among the quieter girls, and I didn't pay much attention to her.
And now, she was screaming at me like a lunatic.
Creepy thing is, when she said I killed her family, I could imagine myself actually doing it. I could imagine exactly how I would kill them.
Like, when I beat- I mean, killed those bullies they were super weak. It was like ripping soggy paper in half. Okay, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration.
Never mind that, even though I could potentially be a killer, I wouldn't kill innocent families. What kind of monster would do that?
"Jane, I wouldn't kill your family." I assured her, walking a bit closer.
I expected her to look up with teary eyes, then embrace me or something, but she did the opposite. Her hand slapped against the side of my face, and she glared at me.
"You would definitely kill my family. Jeff, you don't realize what happens in the future. You...you..." she faltered.
I was still fazed by the slap, and I could feel anger boiling at the pit of my stomach. Calm down, Jeff. Calm down. I took a deep breath, feeling the anger becoming a duller. I then watched her try to figure out what to say.
"You get burned alive at that birthday party." she finally said, pointing towards Barbara's house.
I looked at her skeptically, "So, you're saying I get burned alive at a children's birthday party. I'm finding this hard to believe." I mumbled, crossing my arms.
Jane nods, "I know this is hard to believe, but you absolutely cannot go. Promise me." she ordered, placing her hands on her hips.
I sighed, what was the point in going anyways? I already told my mom and Barbara that I wasn't going to attend.
Raising my hands as a sign of defeat, I agreed, "I promise I will not go to that birthday party." and with that, Jane looked satisfied.
The scars on her face also seemed to respond to my words. They began to disappear like they were never there.
I pointed her to the mirror in the front hall, "Jane... your face!" I exclaimed, my eyes widening.
It was then that I began to believe everything Jane had told me. No way... I actually hurt her in four weeks time? I felt a mix of fear and guilt, and I looked at Jane. She looked at herself in the mirror, her eyes sparkling.
"My skin isn't leathery? My face has no smile!" she turned to look at me, "Jeff, we did it! We prevented the fire, thus prevented the murder of our families!" she cheered, smiling widely.
I froze, "Our families?" I restated, emphasizing the 'our'.
Jane's expression then became serious, "Yes, Jeff. You murdered your family too." she explained, watching for my reaction.
I didn't know how I reacted, and I didn't care. I killed my family? I killed Lui? No, that's impossible. I wouldn't do that!
As if reading my thoughts, Jane spoke up, "You did." she said firmly, frowning slightly.
"No. No, I wouldn't." I confirmed, staring down at my hands.
These hands will kill my family?
Jane didn't say anything, she let me have silence; the one thing I needed.
After a long pause, Jane strolled up to me, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"It's alright, Jeff. You're not going to kill them. You see, a screw came loose when you killed them. You... snapped. You weren't yourself." she said in a darker tone.
I nodded my head, that was pretty much all I could do. I was at a loss for words.
That was when I heard a knock on our window. There were two boys, boys I recognized. I was surprised to see they were still up and, well... alive.
Jane turned to the sound of the knock, and her eyes widened, "That's..." she began.
"...Randy and Keith." I finished for her, their names popping into my head. I had completely forgot their names, but all the information came rushing back.
They ruined my brothers life, and for that they will pay dearly.
Jane glared at me, "JEFF! Remember, these guys are the ones that triggered your craziness! If you mess up, you could end up killing your family!" she shouted angrily.
Her words seemed to bring me out of my trance, and I looked at her, "I almost lost it..." I croaked, becoming aware of the monster inside me.
She was right, my feelings were out of control. Lately, I had been trying to solve all my problems with violence. I got Lui in jail, killed probably hundreds of families in the near future, and ruined lives, must I list more...
Jane nodded, "I know. Just keep yourself under control. I'll handle them." she said confidently.
What could Jane do against those two? She was too weak.
Jane walked over to the window, and opened it slightly, "What do you want? Jeff doesn't want to fight right now." she growled, glaring at the pair of boys.
Randy smiled, "Ah, Jane. My finest customer! What are you doing with that trash? Come hang out with us." he flirted, his tone disgusted me.
Keith glared at him, "Randy, we came to settle some ties with that kid. ...Certainly not to get Jane as your girlfriend." he muttered in an embarrassed tone.
Randy looked dissatisfied, then looked up at me, "Come on, Jeff. Let's scrap." he smirked.
I shook my head, "No." I responded, watching Jane closely.
She smiled in return, but Randy didn't react as well as I hoped.
I heard him release the safety on a pistol, he held it against the glass, pointing it at Jane's head.
He glared at me, "Fight me, or I blow her brains out." he spat, then smiled at me.
It was a cold, heartless smile. He was seriously going to shoot her if I refused to fight him?
I knew my expression must've been horrified. What should I do?
