Hero Glory Days
In the Republic Galaxica, there were many great heroes with amazing abilities. But among the greatest of the heroes were heroes of the Jedi. Some heroes you know probably got their powers from being bitten by radioactive animals, hit by a meteorite, being hit by the result of a top secret experiment gone horribly wrong, or even building a machine that enhanced one's natural ability. But the Jedi, they were special.
Jedi were born with special abilities, which usually showed up by the time they were three years old. And once they got their powers, each new Jedi started out as a sidekick, known as a Padawan. As such, they fought alongside one of the heroes and trained under their wing until they gained the skills necessary to move up to hero status.
Of course, there were also the heroes who were not born Jedi, but fought for the people anyway, and they held an alliance with the Jedi to fight evil and protect those who would run into danger that even local authorities would be helpless to fight themselves.
Each hero was unique in his or her own way, and ultimately, it was up to each of them to uphold the oath of all heroes:
Fantastical forces are we,
Against all evil, we fight as a team
We do no wrong, help all in need
Identities secret we shall keep.
Face our fears, with true heart
Our sacred duty, to protect all
With each good deed
Picking up thee who falls.
Sadly, like every hero, they had their sworn enemies, commonly known as supervillains. Heroes did all kinds of great deeds. Saving kittens who got stuck in trees, assisting the fire department when there were obstacles keeping them from fighting a fire, foiling bank robberies, even flying up high to rescue a child's lost balloon. But superheroes' biggest threat and usual reason for their line of work was villains with powers much like theirs.
Supervillains did not just rob banks or vandalize buildings; to them, that was mere child's play. No, they liked to go for big stuff. Stealing priceless artifacts from museums said to have special powers, holding politicians hostage, building giant robots to attack the city, and planting bombs on places full of innocent children. But luckily for the people, the heroes always prevailed, though sometimes they like a lot of heroes even without powers, sustained injuries and emotional scars from the battles they faces.
This was why part of the heroes oath was to fight as a team; problems big or small could only be truly solved with a team of people whether it was a lot of members or even just two friends. As the saying goes, "two heads are better than one."
Of course, although the heroes did do these deeds simply because it was right, they didn't go completely uncompensated for their heroic work. The Senate always rewarded the heroes with a big check for their services, which was helpful. As you can probably imagine, it's very difficult to hold down a job when the world gets into chaos at random times, and you just happen to be the hero closest to where the trouble was, and you couldn't tell your boss you were late, absent, or had to leave early because you were busy stopping a meteor from crashing into a school or destroying a giant destructive robot.
Besides saving the worlds of the galaxy and acting as peacekeepers and guardians for the people, the heroes also had a duty to protect the next generation of superheroes and remind present and future heroes why they did these deeds.
————————————————
Among the greatest of these heroes was the father-daughter duo Captain Hardwear and Little Dash.
Hardwear's costume was pretty cool. Black and blue jumpsuit with a logo of two hammers forming an 'H.' Little Dash, on the other hand, wore a suit of yellow with a logo of a flame, fitting as she ran so fast she could set sand on fire and turn it into glass. Her long ponytail added to the flash of her outfit too. At least, this was her name and suit for now, as she was currently a junior sidekick.
There were three main levels in the Jedi Hero League: Junior Sidekick, Padawan/Sidekick, and Hero. Each new hero started out as a junior sidekick, and had a starter hero name and costume that they would wear until they mastered their fighting skills, and fully understood the Hero Oath. Then, they would make the costume modifications of their choice, and create their own unique superhero name.
Captain Hardwear was known for his super strength and indestructibility, whereas his daughter Little Dash could run and fly at the speed of light. The two had fought alongside each other for as long as the latter could remember. By day or night, they were two of the greatest heroes, but in the moments they were not being called to fight a bad guy, they lived under their secret identities of Qui-Gon Jinn and his four-year-old daughter Kara.
————————————————
Initially, the heroes had been hesitant to allow Captain Hardwear to train his daughter, but he insisted that it would be in her best interest because he knew her powers better than anyone else. But the reason the Hero League was hesitant was not fear of nepotism... it was because of the loss of Miss-ology.
Miss-ology, under the guise of Tahl Yahin, was a hero best known for summoning spirits of mythological creatures you may know in folklore and fairy tales, and using knowledge from their various stories to fight villains. And both in and out of her hero work, she was also the wife of the great hero Captain Hardwear, and mother of Little Dash. But one day, tragedy struck.
Some really bad guys struck at a secure facility, and among all the villains, the worst of all were of a group called the Sith, the most dangerous super beings on any planet. Similar to the Jedi, the Sith were born with powers, but unlike the Jedi, were trained to use their powers for evil.
On that particular night, the Sith attempted to access a high tech weapons facility at Kamino Labs in order to steal some plans for a cloning project so they could clone all the most powerful Sith and make an unstoppable army of Sith. But the only way to ensure the Sith never got their hands on this ability was to destroy the plans entirely. Many Jedi came into battle that night, but Miss-ology didn't make it out.
The whole building was up in flames, Captain Hardwear was knocked unconscious, and a young boy who'd been trapped inside tried desperately to save him, when one of the Sith attempted to shoot them. But then, Miss-ology jumped in and took that blast for them. Captain Hardwear would have been able to survive the shot, given that he was indestructible, but the child would not have.
By the time Captain Hardwear woke up, he was already in the hospital wing in the Jedi Base. Not surprisingly, he collapsed in devastation when he learned what had become of his beloved wife. But the boy he'd rescued happened to be the son of Kamino Labs' lead scientist, and he was so grateful to Captain Hardwear for saving him, he donated the money to give his wife a proper memorial. And the mayor placed a statue of Miss-ology in the local park to honor the brave hero's memory.
For a while, Captain Hardwear could only mourn his wife on his own, and spent most of his time taking care of his daughter, as well as his thirteen-year-old sidekick named Obi-Wan Kenobi, a.k.a. Wild Whisperer, as his power was talking to animals.
————————————————
It had been three years since his wife's passing, but now Captain Hardwear was the happiest he could be. In the backseat of his speeder sat his little daughter Kara and young Obi-Wan all dressed up. Qui-Gon, on the other hand, was all dressed up in a suit of a lovely maroon.
Today was an important day for him because... he was getting re-married.
Some time ago, Qui-Gon went to a shop to get some parts to fix a speeder that wasn't working, where he met a lovely woman who worked there. Her name was Shmi. Call it fantasy if you will, but the moment he looked into her eyes for the first time, Qui-Gon could swear he was under a spell. After getting the parts he needed, one day, he decided to come back just to see her, and he asked her out on a date. Before they knew it, one date turned into another, and they kissed.
And one month ago, Qui-Gon got down on one knee to ask for her hand. The two lovebirds wanted to be married as soon as possible, and their wedding was tonight. Qui-Gon was so excited to go up to the altar tonight and marry his new lady love. But, he was also nervous. Despite being with her almost two years, Qui-Gon never told Shmi he was a superhero; he wanted her to marry him because she loved him, not because he was this big-time hero with god-like strength and praise from people high in power. He planned to tell her eventually, but after they got married.
Except... a little trouble brewed as a news report came up on the radio about a dangerous police pursuit occurring nearby.
"Uh oh." Qui-Gon said. "Sounds like trouble."
Qui-Gon hit a button on the speeder and set it to auto-pilot to follow the pursuit, and to inconspicuously get the three heroes into their super suits. Most have heard of the wedding day being chaotic, especially right before it was time for the party to walk down the aisle, but this was no ordinary wedding day. It was the wedding day of one of the greatest superheroes ever. Had everyone known Captain Hardwear was getting re-married, it most likely would've been all over the news. But since the bride was a civilian, Qui-Gon kept it secret, and would obviously have to stand at the altar as Qui-Gon Jinn.
"Children, you are about to see a more extreme case much like those you may face when you are full-time heroes someday."
Qui-Gon quickly became Captain Hardwear, and his children... Little Dash and Wild Whisperer.
"Looks like this wedding day won't be boring after all," said Wild Whisperer.
Captain Hardwear began quickly driving down the road to the pursuit, when he saw a woman calling him to stop. And being the devoted hero he was for any good deed big and small, Captain Hardwear stopped his car.
"What's the problem, Ma'am?" asked the hero.
"My cat Lawson won't come down." said the woman, pointing to a loth cat sitting on a high branch in a tree.
"Wild Whisperer... This is where you come in. And take Little Dash out as well." Captain Hardwear said, taking note of the pursuit approaching fast. "Miss, you best steer clear. Things could get dangerous here."
"Oh no, he's quite tame." said the woman.
Wild Whisperer got to talking tabby while Captain Hardwear lifted the tree from its roots and held it so Lawson would be above his owner. Meanwhile, the police pursuit was approaching even faster.
"Wild, pick it up!" Captain Hardwear said.
"Here, kitty, kitty." Wild Whisperer sang, but the cat wouldn't let up.
So, Captain Hardwear had to resort to something a little more drastic. He shook the tree as hard as he could to get the cat to let go, but Lawson had a pretty good grip on the branch. So, he shook it harder and harder until he fell into his owner's arms, and just in time too!
Quickly, Captain Hardwear shifted the giant tree towards the road, right in front of the criminals' hover vehicle, causing it to crash and stop, and the police did the rest.
————————————————
Captain Hardwear placed the tree back in its place and scratched Lawson's ears, the cat purring.
"Thank you, Captain Hardwear," said one officer. "You've done it again."
"I couldn't have done it without my junior helpers." Captain Hardwear said, messing with his kids' hair.
Suddenly, the radio in Captain Hardwear's car beeped with an alert.
Attention all units! Attention all units! We have a tour bus robbery on the corner of Main Street and Jogan Drive.
————————————————
Captain Hardwear checked the time. The wedding wasn't for another few hours. If he hurried, he would make it to the altar in time. So, he called his children into the car, only to be surprised to find a third child in there. A young girl about ten years old dressed like a superhero in green and silver with a symbol of a letter G that looked to be made of gears and other mechanical pieces.
"Ready for takeoff!" Said the girl.
"What the? Who are you supposed to be?" Captain Hardwear asked.
"I'm Gizmo Girl!" The girl said.
Another look at the girl, and the famous hero suddenly recognized her.
"I remember now, you are that girl from the fan club." He tried to remember her name until it came to him. "Ah! Jamie."
"Gizmo Girl."
"That's very nice, little one. But if you're here for another autograph or photo-op, it isn't a good time."
"No, no! That's not it! I wanna be a hero like you! I know all your moves, your catchphrases, everything!"
But, Captain Hardwear took the girl out of the car and told her it was too dangerous for her to come along, especially untrained.
"It takes more than knowledge to be a hero, Jamie- Gizmo Girl." Captain Hardwear. "Right now, if you want to be a hero, get yourself home safely and leave this job to the professionals."
And the hero got back into the car and drove off before the girl could say anything else. But, she got determined.
————————————————
Up on a building somewhere, a robber was digging through a multitude of purses he'd stolen from the tour bus not too long ago.
"You know," said a voice, startling the robber. "You can tell a lot about a woman by the contents of her purse, but I sense that isn't what you had in mind."
The robber started to pull outa gun, when suddenly...
WHOOSH!
Some kind of whip hit the robber right in the hand, making him drop his weapon, and a couple of heavy ropes with heavy balls twisted around his wrists and legs, making him fall over, and Little Dash took that as her cue to zip around and round up all the stolen bags and stuff.
Captain Hardwear looked by the wall nearby, and out came a familiar child.
"Where did you come from?"
"I'm a lot smarter than you think, Captain." Jamie, or rather Gizmo Girl, said. She motioned to some rockets on her shoes. "See? I have these rocket boots, not to mention my personal swiss army snare, complete with whip and flying restraints. I invented these all by myself! Still think I'm not qualified to be a hero?"
"Now, I never said you weren't qualified. Just that you aren't ready. Not yet, anyway. I will say, however, you do show some potential with your smarts."
"So, can I be a hero?"
"That has yet to be determined. You will require training, and I am not the one who needs convincing. But I will tell you what. Keep at it with that inventive imagination of yours, I will put in a good word for you to be a recruit. For now, my sidekicks I have somewhere to be. But remember, Gizmo Girl, working solo for every mission is not what makes a hero."
"What does that mean?"
"You are a smart young woman. I trust you can use your imagination to solve that mystery."
————————————————
Captain Hardwear and his two sidekicks managed to take all the stolen bags to the police station so they could be returned to their owners, and put the robber behind bars.
"Hey, Hardwear!" Called a familiar hero by the name of Weather Man (secret identity: Mace Windu), as he flew by with some rain clouds to put out a fire. He wasn't alone either. He was in the midst of training young hero-in-training Heartbeat (secret identity: Clarissa Heart), whose power involved matters of the heart and heartbeats.
"Hey, Weather Man!" Captain Hardwear greeted the weather themed hero.
"Shouldn't you be getting ready?" He asked.
"We're on our way."
Except, just before the three heroes could be on their way, they heard the sounds of screaming and police sirens. The three heroes looked in horror to see a light being shined at a man who was standing at the edge of the top of a very high building.
"He's gonna jump!" A woman cried.
And the man did jump!
Quickly, Captain Hardwear did the only thing he could think of, and literally jumped into action, catching the falling man and holding him close to his body as they crashed through a window.
Captain Hardwear breathed a sigh of relief that they'd made it to the other side.
"Are you alright?' Captain Hardwear asked.
"I think you broke something." The man said.
And Captain Hardwear had a feeling he didn't mean the window.
"With counseling, I hope you will come to forgive me." Captain Hardwear said. "And rest assured, I will see to it you are aided quickly and properly."
Captain Hardwear pressed his comm and called for fellow hero Dr. Healix (secret identity: Shaak Tii) to come quickly and aid in the man's medical assistance.
"Is he alright?" Little Dash asked, zipping in.
"Hopefully, he will be." Said Hardwear, picking up his daughter.
Except, Wild Whisperer suddenly heard something and immediately warned the others to get down. And all of a sudden...
BOOM!
A vault in the wall was blown open. As if that weren't strange enough, the heroes heard "Here Comes the Bride" playing. Last time they checked on the invitations, the wedding was taking place in a church, not the bank. But the wedding march was caused by the entrance of bride themed villain...
"Bridezilla!" Captain Hardwear glared.
"Captain Hardwear," smirked the villain. She took out a ring. "With this ring. I destroy thee!"
Bridezilla attempted to hit the three heroes with a sonic boom, but Captain Hardwear stood firmly on the floor and protected the children.
Little Dash quickly started dashing round and round Bridezilla to throw her off, but Bridezilla pulled out a garter. And flung it so it wrapped firmly around the guys while she stuck one leg in Little Dash's way and knocked her down.
"I'd love to stay and chat, but I think you'll have another engagement soon." Bridezilla smirked. And she took out a bouquet of roses that was sparking fire. "All single folks, here comes the bouquet!"
And Bridezilla threw her bouquet over her back and out the window, where it landed on the track of a railway train! The bouquet exploded, and the middle of the track was blown up, and to make it worse, a train was coming up fast!
Captain Hardwear managed to get himself and Wild Whisperer unstuck. He told them to look for Bridezilla and make sure the man was kept safe while he went to catch the train. The brave hero rushed as fast as he could to get onto the track and to the rushing train. There was no time to tell the conductor to stop, so he did the only other thing he could.
Push the train!
Captain Hardwear gave it all his might, amid the passengers being jerked by the sudden push on the train, and he arely got the train to stop just as the first car was about to fall right off the edge!
The police came and so did the fire department and Dr. Healix to heal anyone injured in either incident.
Captain Hardwear held Jamie's hand and walked her over to the police captain.
"Take this one home," said Captain Hardwear. "Let her parents know she's been good, and be sure to let them know Captain Hardwear believes she has a bright future ahead of her."
"Captain Hardwear!" Wild Whisperer rushed over. "Bridezilla... she got away."
"I tried to get her," said Little Dash. "But she threw another blow-up bouquet at me. She missed though."
"Anything gonna be done about that, Captain?" Asked an officer.
Captain Hardwear saw the time and realized it was almost time for the wedding!
"Okay, look. I'd love to stay and talk, but I really have to go now. But don't worry, we'll get Bridezilla! Eventually."
Captain Hardwear and his kids got into the car and began driving to their next big mission. The scariest mission they may ever face: Captain Hardwear, or rather Qui-Gon Jinn's wedding day.
