Chapter Twenty-two

22.

I openly gape at the hand outstretched towards me. I think Tyler is just as surprised because he wraps his arm around my waist.

"Can I have this dance?" Harris asks, trying to sound hopeful. A dark emotion glitters in his eyes.

Weighing the pros and cons, I turn and meet Tyler's upset gaze. I gently remove his arm, while giving him an apologetic smile.

"Sure, why not?" I say, trying to sound polite.

"I can list twenty reasons why not!" Tyler says grumpily. I give him a glare before taking the hand that was offered. Harris' hand is smooth, and I feel like it consumes my own. It isn't warm or comforting, in fact, compared to the sweaty room it is freezing cold. He offers me a cool smile. I hear Erika talk to Tyler.

"Come one Sugar, let's dance." She says sweetly, and I can tell he isn't given a chance to reply based in the low grown that he emits seconds later.

We start to slowly sway, everything feels wrong. The way his hands hold my hips a little to tightly to prevent me from jerking away suddenly if I chose to. How calculating his face looked in the low lighting. The way he tucked a stray hair behind my ear, almost tenderly. It had escaped from my updo and was resting on my cheek.

"What do you want, Harris?" I ask, not wanting to beat around the bush. I couldn't keep the curiosity out of my voice.

"You never could stand a mystery, could you?" He said it like a statement. "You had to know everything, nothing was a secret when it came to Miss Mellie." I cringe at the nickname, my temper rising.

"Only my friends call me Mellie, and we most certainly aren't friends." I snap quickly. Instead of offending him, he looks positively thrilled.

"We never really were friends, now were we?" Again, a statement rather than a question. One that brings a flush to my face. It was true, we had completely skipped the whole friendship thing and had almost immediately started dating. I think that's why I valued my relationship with Tyler. It was so much more real than what I had with Harris. Especially since it is only a friendship.
I scowled at him.

"No, we never were. And that was the first of many mistakes in our relationship. If you can even really call it that." I say, and he flinches slightly. Good, he still cares. That'll make it easier to break him.

"Come one, Melody. We all make mistakes, it's not like it would happen again." He says, and he almost sounds earnest. I try to contain my frustration, and it morphs into amusement. I burst out laughing, the whole idea of him remaining faithful was comical. I take a moment to compose myself before addressing Harris.

"I don't believe you," I say, sounding bitter, even to myself. His eyes light up.

"I could prove it to you." He says almost eagerly.

"Oh really?" I say sarcastically. He frowns, but nods.

"Yeah, I can."

"How?" I ask, curious but fearing the answer.

"I don't know, but if you gave me a second chance..."

I stare at him in absolute shock. He is trying to win me back is doing the exact thing he did to lose me. He is a ducking idiot. It seemed weird, to insult ducks by comparing them to a moron, but I decided not to care.

"Does Barbie know what you're propositioning?" I ask, deciding to play along. As if I would actually consider getting back together with him.

"No! Of course not." He says quickly, and I can see a triumphant smirk pulling at his features. And horribly evil idea pops into my head. On how I could break Harris and Erika.

"Well, I don't wanna be with you while you're with the hoebag. I still have feelings for you." I almost choke on the foul lie but continue. "I think the only way for us to be together is if you break up with Erika."

He looks uncertain, but I can see him deliberating.

"Okay, I'll break up with Erika." He says. Giving me a winning smile. I just scowl at him. I think it's funny, that he thinks that will appease me.

"Break up with her, now. Otherwise, I couldn't be with you. I would always be wondering whether you loved her." I say, trying to act like a victim. My eyes open as wide as they could be, pleading with him.

"I don't think that's the best idea..." He mumbles.

"Then you don't love me," I respond, trying to sound choked up.

"I- I'll do it. But only if you break up with Tyler." He says, and I nod. He seems okay with that and walks determinedly over to where she is standing. Erika takes her talons off Tyler and turns to look at Harris coyly.

"Ready to dance, babe?" She asks, reaching towards him.

"No." He says without sympathy.

"Wait why?"

She looks confused, and I can tell a thousand things are running through her mind. But I can tell from the way her eyes narrow and dart over to me that she put something together.

"Look, I don't really feel a spark or connection with you. I'm done. With everything about you." Harris says mercilessly.

"But, I love you. You're seriously breaking up with me? Are you doing it for her?" She says, sound desperate. I can see her eyes start to water. I try to control my smile.

"I'm breaking up for me. This relationship was toxic." He says. I see Tyler throwing me a few confused glances.

I walk up from behind Harris and wrap my arm around his waist. He glances down at me. I wink at Tyler, and he quickly twists his growing smile into a horrible snarling face.

"You're such a bitch, Melody!" He says angrily. I could tell it was based on how he called me by my actual name.

"I hate you both!" Erika snaps, speeding past us, slamming her shoulder into me, which sent me backward.

Harris helps me up, and I smile at him prettily.

"Let's go," I say, slipping my hand into his. I look over and meet Riley's disgusted gaze. Her face is scrunched up, the girl next to her seems to be judging me.

But I didn't care. I was about to give Harris a taste of his own medicine.

Question; Do you think Melody is taking this whole thing to far, or is she reasonable in her revenge?

PLEASE; Remeber to vote and comment. I would love to hear from my readers more often. It helps me know I'm doing a good job.
