jayke spinelli's ten reasons why he makes me smile
Jayke Spinelli is a peculiar teenager.
Just ask his childhood friends who have long since given up trying to convince him that in order to 'fit in' first impressions mean everything in high school. Especially when you are a freshman.
Everybody knows who Jayke Spinelli is; the friendly and out-going boy who is always seen wearing black high tops and knee-high rainbow socks no matter what the occasion.
Most of the towns’ folk have gotten used to Jayke’s odd sense of style. Despite the occasional dirty look thrown his way Jayke is pretty happy as far as he is concerned. For the most part his life is great- he has a very supportive and at times unusual family with highly un-orthodox values.
On a particularly long weekend Mirna, Jayke's eccentric mom invites his aunt Piper to stay with them until her divorce is settled.
Living with two equally hair-brained women who do not know the meaning of boundaries can be frustrating. Especially when his father takes every chance he can to tease him about it.
It's a good thing Jayke has more friends than he can count to keep him company.
However, not everyone is a fan of the quirky fifteen year-old.
Take Blake Daniel for example, the soft spoken Junior of Inland High School who has old history with the social outcast. If there is one thing Blake cannot stand it is the loud mouthed, obnoxious freshman who insists on attempting conversation every time they meet.
Much to Blake's dismay the two boys share the same English class.
After reading The House on Mango Street, Jayke's favorite English teacher, Mr.Bradly, hands out a pile of composition notebooks and assigns the class a project where they write letters from Esperanza Corderos perspective. True to his honor roll status, Jayke gets started on the project right after school.
Despite the fact that Jayke is a social person there are many things people don't know about him. Even his mother who 'snoops' through his fake journal has no idea what is going on inside her sons head.
There is only one person who understands what young Jayke is going through, Seth, his 8th grade internet pen pal from England.
After school Jayke gets re-acquainted with Blake when they are partnered for community service. There are many things nobody knows about the quiet golden boy. Like the fact that he is homophobic and has two dads.
Unfortunately hiding secrets becomes exhausting when Jayke accidentally misplaces his treasured journal.
Everyone becomes concerned about Jayke when he starts uncharacteristically receiving bad grades. Unable to control his anxiety and stress any longer, Jayke lashes out by starting fights with people closest to him. Like his ‘friend’ Seth who stops communicating with him altogether
Suddenly everything is spiraling out of control, especially when Blake starts treating him differently. But the person who ends up returning Jayke’s journal isn’t who he expected.
Soon Jayke is faced with his ‘new reality’.
