Chapter 9
Smokepaw jumped as she heard a twig snap behind her. She turned around. The past moon of training had really helped. Her senses were sharp and her reactions were getting better by the day. She relaxed as she realized that it was only a squirrel.
In the past moon, two cats that FallenClan thought were dead had arrived. Squirrelflight and Rowanclaw had been told of what happened, and quickly agreed to join the new Clan.
She snapped back into reality. This is my Warriors Assesment! I can't just dose off!
She fixed her eyes on the squirrel, moons of training finally paying off. The squirrel turned around and squealed in alarm, racing up a tree.
No! Smokepaw thought, panicked. She watched as the squirrel ran up a branch, and before she knew what she was doing, she leaped, high in the air, and snagged the squirrel out of the tree. Her claws left a small gash down the squirell's stomach. It screeched before falling dead. Smokepaw smiled in satisfaction. Suddenly, a huge weight pinned her down. Crowfeather roared, his amber eyes determined. Smokepaw screamed. Suddenly, a tingling sensation stirred up in Smokepaw's stomach. Crowfeather suddenly jumped back into the tree. Fallen leaves flew back into their branches. A raven that was flying overhead flew backwards.
What's happening? Smokepaw felt as if she had no control over her body. Crowfeather was now well hidden in the leaves.
Suddenly, everything was still.
Huh?
Suddenly, Crowfeather leaped out the trees and roared. Smokepaw screamed, jumping out of the way as Crowfeather crashed to the ground, quickly leaping to his feet.
"This is the final part of your assesment." Crowfeather snarled. "Claws sheathed, but trust me, losing will still be painful"
Crowfeather scrambled up a tree, Smokepaw running after him. She saw the occasional flickering of shadows, and eventually observed Crowfeather's pattern. He jumped from the highest branch to the lowest, then back up again.
I just have to wait for him to come back down to the lowest branch, then I can do the thing that I did with the squirrel.
She waited until she saw the faint shadow of Crowfeather on the leaves of the lowest branch, then leaped into the air, yowling as she sent a forceful strike to Crowfeather's hind legs. She watched as Crowfeather's knees buckled, and quickly ran out of the way as Crowfeather came crashing to the ground.
"So.... are you ready to surrender yet, or do you want me to continue fighting you."
"I... surrender." Crowfeather mewed, shaking dirt off his pelt. Smokepaw smiled, sitting down.
"I think that means I've passed-" Smokepaw screamed as Crowfeather tackled her, striking her with powerful, quick paw strikes.
Pain made her vision blurry. Suddenly, her vision cleared. Her ears rang. Time slowed. She watched as Crowfeather swung his paw at her in slow motion.
What?!
Smokepaw quickly blocked his strike, earning a surprised look from Crowfeather. That moment of hesitation was all she needed. Using all her strength, Smokepaw grabbed onto Crowfeather's arm with her paws and flung him over, landing on all fours. Crowfeather grunted as he hit to ground, panting.
"That's enough." Smokepaw turned around and saw Mistystar padding towards Smokepaw.
"You have shown great skills and fast reactions as a warrior. You are better than most warriors will ever be. You have passed." Smokepaw beamed, pride making her heart race.
"Crowfeather!" Leafpool broke through the trees, her eyes full of worry. She glared at Smokepaw.
"How could you do this to him!" She screeched. Crowfeather stood up, smiling slightly as Leafpool buried her head into his shoulder.
"Ummm..." Mistystar turned away, shifting her paws awkwardly.
"Oh. Er- hi Mistystar!" Leafpool tried for a smile but ended up failing. Mistystar smiled.
"I understand. You love him." Leafpool lowered her head in shame.
"But I can't! I'm a Medicine Cat!"
"Firepaw will take your place. He is certainly skilled, and without a doubt, is the prophecy Cat."
"But..."
"No buts, Leafpool. You are my Clanmate, and your happiness comes first."
"But..." Leafpool hesitated, considering her words. "Thank you, Mistystar."
—
"Smokepaw, by the powers of StarClan, I give your the name of Smokeblaze, in honor of your blazing spirit and great passion."
"Smokeblaze! Smokeblaze!" Firepaw smiled nervously as Mistystar called her name.
"Leafpool, our medicine cat has decided to retire and become a warrior. Cries of protest almost immediately rang through the camp. Mistystar lashed her tail, signaling for silence.
"But, Firepaw has proven to be skilled in both communicating with StarClan and healing. She will take Leafpool's place as the Medicine Cat."
Firepaw sighed as Mistystar called her up.
"Tonight, Leafpool had her last vision from StarClan. In it, they told her of your Medicine Cat name."
Firepaw stood taller, hoping it would make her look more confident
"By the powers of StarClan, I give you the name of Firelight, as you are the light that will restore the Clans and StarClan."
Firelight felt as if the fate of the Clans had just been thrown onto her shoulders. Well, that was partially true. But still, she knew that she was now responsible for keeping her own Clan healthy and for somehow restoring the old Clans.
"Firelight!" Firelight ignored the voice of her former mentor. Where feelings of sadness had once been, there was now anger. Leafpool knew that she was responsible for restoring the old Clans. Yet she had abandoned her duty as medicine cat for Crowfeather. Again! How many cats were going to suffer for her wants?
"Firelight, talk to me." Leafpool pleaded as she followed Firelight into the medicine cat den.
Firelight lashed her tail, showing that she didn't want to talk.
"I don't care." Leafpool snapped.
Firelight growled softly. She turned around, facing Leafpool.
"Hello Leafpool. What business do you have in the medicine cat den? Are you or your precious mate Crowfeather Injured? If not, visit me at another time. And by saying that, I mean 'please don't ever talk to me again'."
Leafpool glared at Firelight. "You aren't as good as you think, Firelight. So get rid of that arrogant attitude."
Firelight shredded a pile of leaves that happened to be in front of her.
"I'll get rid of my attitude once you learn the warrior code, Leafpool. It's hard to believe that your father was an honorable Clan leader, when you're the exact opposite."
Hurt flashed in Leafpool's eyes. Firelight would have felt sympathy if she wasn't so angry. She turned away, glad to hear the sound of Leafpool's footsteps quickly fading away. Firelight turned around, and breathed a sigh of relief as she saw that Leafpool was gone. Across from the medicine cat den, Smokeblaze sat in the warriors den. Despite her feelings of pride, she was confused with what had happened today. IT was almost as if she had reversed time.
But that wasn't possible. She would know if she had powers to reverse time.
Right?
--
Jayfeather shrieked as a strong set of paws slammed him awake.
"Jay's Flight! You are training to become a Healer! Not a fighter!" Jayfeather scolded, only to be tackled by Holly Leaf.
"Good to see that Gray Wing's Training is paying off." Stoneteller grumbled, only to start screaming herself as Lion Blaze tackled her.
"Stop!" Fire Star called. "We don't want to kill them, only severely injure them!"
"Sure." Holly Leaf jumped off of Jayfeather, lashing her tail slightly.
Jay's Flight jumped off Jayfeather after Holly Leaf. Fire Star playfully swiped at Jayfeather's whiskers before jumping off him.
"Fighting with your own kits, Jay's Wing?" Stoneteller sat beside Jayfeather. JAyfeather nodded, grooming his fur.
"How's Jay's Flight doing?" Jayfeather asked.
"Well." Stoneteller replied.
"I would help train him if you'd let me." Jayfeather stretched out his legs and stood up.
"Storm and Jay's Flight may be hard to train at once, but I'll manage."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I am sure."
Jayfeather nodded, his thoughts drifting back to the Clans once again. Even though he had made his choice, he couldn't help but wonder if the Clans would have won if he had stayed.
"Stoneteller! We have trouble." Gray Wing called, his face twisted into a scowl. Jayfeather peeked out of the den and frowned as he watched Wind and Gorse enter the camp. They were accompanied by two cats he had not seen before.
"Wind and Gorse." Stoneteller mewled, with an unnasty tone in her voice.
"We have come to apologize for killing your friend." Wind said formally. She placed two pieces of prey in front of Stoneteller. Jayfeather's eyes widened. How dare these rogues think that they could just kill a member of their tribe, and just replace him with prey?
"How dare you? Are you suggesting that Clear Sky was worth nothing more than prey?" Gray Wing sprang to his paws, his fur bristling. An unsettling tension sparked into the air.
"We worked hard to catch this prey, only to apologize for Wind defending herself against your friend attacking her! You should be grateful that we aren't ambushing you!"
A golden colored she-cat sprang to her paws, her teeth clenched.
"Quiet, Star Flower." Wind demanded. "We don't want war."
"Well, I do!" Gray Wing growled, furious. He sprang at Gorse, who yelped, jumping back to avoid Gray Wing's claws.
"Gray Wing! No!" Storm tackled Gray Wing, pinning him to the ground.
"Enough!" Stoneteller shouted.
"Wind, Gorse, please hastily leave our camp. And do not return." Stoneteller demanded, her voice cold and unpleasant. " Gray Wing, your behavior will not be accepted. I'll let you off this time, but next time it won't be so easy."
Jayfeather stared at the pieces of prey and gasped as he instantly recognized the scarlet color of deathberries, badly hidden and clearly shoved in last minute.
"Half Moon- I mean, Stoneteller." Jayfeather mewed urgently. "I think there are deathberries in the prey."
Stoneteller took one look at the prey and growled, fury making her muscles tense.
"Fine then. If they want war, give it to them."
Ello. Sorry about the shortness of this chapter, I tried to get 2000 words in but i couldn't welp.
