Way Down Under The Ground

"Excuse me?" Death asked, raising an eyebrow. "Did I mishear you?"

He knew he didn't. But Luigi would know he was listening in on everything if he just automatically agreed and handed him a ticket, so he played the part.

"No," Luigi replied. "I need a ticket to the Underwhere. And when Mario comes, he'll need one too. It's for the prophecy. Trust me." He begged, putting his hands together in front of his own chest in an almost pleading manner.

It wasn't often someone begged to die. Most people Death had encountered did beg, but to be given a second chance. To live. So seeing one of the two people he was actually allowed to give second chances to beg not to have one was really quite a wonder.

Death paused, then looked over Luigi's shoulder at his guitar, letting out a sigh. "A'ight," he muttered, snapping his fingers and making Luigi's original outfit appear in his own hands. "But just to be clear. Once you go down there as a deceased soul, once you ride that train, you don't come back. That's the end of the line."

Luigi shakily nodded, then took his old clothes from Death, nodding up at the god.

Death then did as he was asked. He leaned down and pulled out a single train ticket. A ticket he had long ago set aside for Luigi. After all, technically it was supposed to be used far before then. He had always kept it in his back pocket, along with Mario's, since he never planned on using them.

There were three locations marked on the pass. The Overthere, the Underwhere, and Jaydestown.

"I've been meaning to ask..." Luigi trailed off, looking down at the black checkmark next to Jaydestown on the ticket. "What's the difference between Jaydestown and the Underwhere? I mean... aren't they the same place?"

"Easy," Death shrugged as if this was a given. "The Underwhere is the entirety of the Underwhere. It's world -1. The place most souls go when they die. Jaydestown is just a small section of it. That is where the Queen lives. It is the area she has walled off. On the inside of Jaydestown lies a castle and a system of worker shaydes. But on the outside of that wall... there's nothing but poverty. It's as simple as that."

"Oh..." Luigi muttered, looking down at his feet. "That's-"

"Horrible? I know," Death finished for him, lightly shrugging. "But it's the way it is. And there ain't nothin' we can do to change it."

Luigi didn't nod or shake his head at this. He didn't verbally reply at all. But Death could see the gears turning in Luigi's mind. He could tell that Luigi was trying to think of a way to save the Underwhere and Jaydestown as well. A way to fix what's wrong down there too.

There was always something more to be fixed.

They both heard the sound of a train horn. Luigi's eyes went wide as he turned to the side, looking at the railroad track seeming to form right in front of his very eyes. A train pulled up and the doors opened, waiting for him.

So, he held up the ticket, and walked aboard, knowing that Mario and the other heroes would likely be close behind.

But first, the train had to make a quick stop.

As the doors shut, Death quickly ran up and grabbed onto the side of it, riding with the train as it made for its next pickup.

The Overthere.

The train horn blew as the train began pulling up to the Overthere, where Luvbi was currently living.

Death: On the road to hell there was a railroad track

All the Nimbi's fell silent as Luvbi rolled her eyes and groaned at the sound of his voice.

Luvbi: Aw, come on!

Death: There was a train coming up from way down below

Luvbi: That was not six months!

She quickly tried flying off when the three hags appeared right in front of her, pointing at the train and smirking.

Hags: Better go and get your suitcase packed
Guess it's time to go

Luvbi groaned to herself more as the hags nudged her towards the ever-approaching train in the distance

Death: She's gonna ride that train

Nimbis: Ride that train

Death: She's gonna ride that train

Nimbis: Ride that train!

Death: She's gonna ride that train 'til the end of the line...

Death smirked and teleported right in front of the Nimbi, who cast him a dirty glare.

Death: 'Cause the Queen of the mine is coming to call
Did you ever wonder what it's like on the underside?

Nimbis: Way down under

Death: On the yonder side?

Nimbis: Way down yonder

Death: On the other side of her wall!

He quickly stood back up and started strutting through the Overthere, tipping his hat to a few Nimbis while Luvbi silently sulked to herself.

Death: Follow that dollar for a long way down
Far away from the poorhouse door
You either get to hell or to Jaydestown
Ain't no difference anymore!
Way down Jaydestown
Way down under the ground!

He paused his walking and held his arms out while he explained Jaydestown to the Nimbis, creating visuals for everything he was describing.

Death: Hound dog howl and the whistle blow
Train come a-rollin, clickety-clack
Everybody tryin' to get a ticket to go
But those who go, they don't come back
They goin'

Death and Nimbis: Way down Jaydestown
Way down under the ground

He lightly laughed to himself and swung his black cane around as if it was a prop, skipping over to Luvbi who was slowly lowering herself to the ground, like an annoyed teenager. He lightly smirked at her dramatics and offered his hand, helping her up. She did not thank him, however. Instead, she made a grossed-out face and pushed past him.

She knew deep down that there was no escape from the train. She couldn't stay up here, no matter how much she wanted to. Fighting her mother on this never did her any good.

Luvbi: Winter's nigh and summer's o'er
Hear that high, lonesome sound
Of my mother coming for
To bring me home to Jaydestown

Nimbis, Luvbi, and Death: Way down Jaydestown
Way down under the ground

Luvbi scoffed and floated over to a group of Nimbis that had her bags prepared for her, as well as a few gifts.

Luvbi: Down there, it's a bunch of stiffs
Brother, I'll be bored to death
Gonna have to import some stuff
Just to entertain myself
Give me money in a tin
Give me a crate of diamonds so fine
Takes a lot of gold and gems
To make it through the wintertime

Nimbis and Luvbi: Way down Jaydestown
Way down under the ground

She sighed and picked up her bag, the size of them weighing her down slightly as the hags ushered her forward.

Hags: Every little penny in the wishing well
Every little nickel on the drum
All them shiny little heads and tails
Where do you think they come from?
They come from

Nimbis, Luvbi, Death, and Hags: Way down Jaydestown
Way down under the ground

Death suddenly stood up on a cloud so he was towering over everyone else, holding his arms out.

Death: Everybody hungry
Everybody tired
Everybody slaves by the sweat on her brow
The wage is nothing and the work is hard
It's a graveyard in Jaydestown

Nimbis and Death: Way down Jaydestown
Way down under the ground

Everyone seemed to rush and surround Luvbi as she gathered the last of her things, trying to enjoy the last moments left of summertime, which had unfortunately been far too short. It was as if there was hardly a summer at all!

The sun had only just come out. Why was it already going back away?

Luvbi pushed forward so she was in front of the crowd with Death, as they looked down the railroad track to see the smoke from the engine in the distance.

Death: Ms. Jaydes is a mean old boss

Luvbi: With a silver whistle and a golden scale

All: An eye for an eye!

Death: And she weighs the cost

All: A lie for a lie!

Death: And your soul for sale

All: Sold!

Luvbi: To the queen on the chromium throne

All: Thrown!

Luvbi: To the bottom of a Sing Sing cell

Death: Where the little wheel squeals and the big wheel groans

Luvbi: And thou better forget about your wishing well

Death, Luvbi, and Nimbis: Way down Jaydestown
Way down under the ground

Everyone slowly stopped and quieted down as the train pulled up to the train station, letting its whistle go off for everyone to hear. Luigi sat way in the back seat, looking out the window at the Overthere, but not being allowed off. For this wasn't his stop.

Death: On the Road to Hell, there was a railroad car...

All the Nimbi's hummed as Luvbi drew back, almost looking afraid.

Death: And the car door opened and a woman stepped out

The hags also hummed, slowly walking away, leaving to go before Jaydes caught them out of place.

Death: Everybody looked and everybody saw
It was the same woman they'd been singin' about

Luvbi glared as the Queen herself stepped into the Overthere, holding her hand out.

Luvbi: You're early!

Jaydes: I missed you.

And worlds away, still waiting in Sammer's Kingdom, Dimentio stood there, wondering if what he had just done was worth it when he suddenly heard those voices in his head again.

Hags: Ms. Jaydes is a mighty queen
Must be making some mighty big deals
Seems like she owns everything!

Dimentio: Kinda makes you wonder how it feels...

He then emptily looked down at the flower in his hands, feeling lost.

Death: All aboard...
A-one, A-two
A-one, two, three, four

Death and Nimbis: Way down Jaydestown
Way down under the ground
Way down Jaydestown
Way down under the ground
Way down under the ground
Way down under the...
Ground...

The train then closed its doors, taking Luvbi away and plunging all the worlds into a cold winter once again, all too soon.
