Oh, Grambi

"DEATH!" Jaydes called, bursting into her castle with a scowl on her face, Luvbi following closely behind her.

"Um, mother. I don't believe yelling at Death will fix the situation-" Luvbi started, when Jaydes shushed her, completely ignoring everything the Nimbi had suggested and yelling once again. "DEATH, GET DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW!"

"One second," Death's voice echoed. From where? It was uncertain. "I'm eating potato chips."

Jaydes rolled her eyes and sighed. She never quite mentioned it before, but Death felt less like a co-worker and more like the annoying little brother she HAD to keep around. Yes, he was vital to the system of the Underwhere, but it would be nice if he could take his job seriously.

He was in big trouble for this.

"Death..." She trailed off in a demanding, firm tone. "Get over here. Right. Now."

"Oof! Not the mom voice," Death snorted, suddenly appearing in the room with a bag of Lays potato chips, sour cream and onion flavor. He giggled, his mouth filled with some, then held the bag out to her. "Potato chips, your Majesty?"

Jaydes just crossed her arms and glared at him, shaking her head.

"No? Oh well. More for me!" Death chimed, popping more into his mouth, then making the bag disappear. "Now why did you call me? You have someone you want me to kill? Because I will totally kill someone for you, my queen."

"No. Death," Jaydes breathed, holding her hand up to silence him. "You KNOW why I called you here."

His smile slowly faded. Yes, he knew the exact reason why she wanted to see him. She was going to yell at him for allowing Luigi, a living soul, to come down here with no true reason other than retrieving a shayde. She was going to yell at him for filling Luigi with a false sense of hope, then lecture him on how shaydes can't leave and how this wasn't how the Underwhere worked.

She worked hard to make Jaydestown a clean, organized town, and she couldn't have mortals coming down here and ruining the perfection.

"A'ight..." Death muttered, looking down. "I'm sorry, your majesty. It won't happen again."

"You're right. It won't." Jaydes stated. "Consider this a warning. You're on thin ice, Death. I cannot exactly fire you, but believe me, if you pull anything else there WILL be punishments. I already let you get away with enough as is."

Death nodded in understanding, then turned to go. But he stopped himself before he went, pausing, then looking back at the queen. "Your Majesty...?" He asked, voice almost small.

"Yes?" Jaydes asked, rubbing her temples in annoyance. "What is it now?"

"I just wanna remind you how much I love and cherish you and your Kingdom. You're truly an amazing ruler, and I hope you know that you look quite lovely today-"

"If you think showering me with compliments will make me let that shayde go, you are sadly mistaken," Jaydes interrupted in a bored tone, causing Death to sigh and turn away again.

"Dang it..." He muttered, simply shrugging. "Well, then it looks like there's nothing I can do."

"That is correct," Jaydes stated. "You may go now."

So, he left. For where? We'll find out later. But for now, it was just Luvbi and Jaydes, waiting in the large palace alone.

"...Mother, isn't this a little... cruel?" Luvbi murmured. "That boy loved that shayde-"

"Rules are rules," Jaydes stated, turning away as well. "And rules cannot be broken for reasons as simple as love. Someday you will understand."

Luvbi doubted it. She and her mother didn't exactly see eye to eye. Of course, her mother wouldn't understand love. She didn't even know what love was anymore. Luvbi doubted that she ever even felt true love. Jaydes claimed to love her, but never actually spent quality time with her. She only ever worked, all day every day.

Meanwhile, Death found himself in the Overthere. It wasn't where he NEEDED to be, per se, but those recently deceased souls could wait five more minutes for their train tickets. This was important. His favorite man in green's happiness was on the line here, after all.

"Sir...?" He asked, stepping up to the King of the Overthere.

To this, Grambi slowly turned around, surprised to see the face he saw. Death hardly ever came up there, after all. The god was much closer with Jaydes than he was with Grambi, due to the fact that a larger percentage of souls went down to the Underwhere. "Why, Death!" Grambi exclaimed, holding his arms out. "What brings you here, old friend?"

"Oh, I've got quite the situation," Death started, smiling mischievously and rocking back and forth on his heels, his hands behind his back. "My favorite ship is sinking, and I need a lifeboat."

Grambi paused and cocked his head to the side, slightly confused. "Come again? I'm afraid I do not follow."

Death lightly laughed, then walked up to Grambi, patting the king's back. "I'm saying... I need your help. There's this mortal I know, and-"

"Oh no, don't tell me," Grambi sighed, seeming almost disappointed. "You fell in love with another mortal, and now their time has come. Death, please, you can't keep doing this to yourself-"

"No, no, no. It's not that. Trust me, I've learned my lesson with that," Death laughed, though Grambi could tell that the laugh wasn't genuine. It was actually a sensitive topic for the god of death, and hearing about it hurt. But that was a long time ago. Centuries, in fact. He was past that. This was something else. "There's this OTHER mortal, Grambi. And he's working on a song..."

"A song...?" Grambi asked, confused. "What kind of song?"

"A song to fix what's wrong," Death stated, with a small smile. "If you had heard the way he sang tonight, you would understand. So please, you have to help me help him."

"Help him what....?" Grambi trailed off. "What happened?"

"Long story..." Death trailed off, slowly smiling. "Try to keep up."

The god then went on to explain EVERYTHING. The song, the love story, the signing. Luigi, Dimentio, the shaydes. Everything. Now Grambi wasn't the same type of ruler as Jaydes. He allowed more to slide. Yes, he was still a rule follower, but if there was no harm, then there was no fowl in his eyes. However, he also wasn't very good about standing up to Jaydes, hence why he allowed her to send Livbi over late and to take Luvbi away early. He never corrected Jaydes when she was in the wrong. He never even spoke to her anymore for fear of starting a fight.

It wasn't always like this, but it was now. They had simply grown apart. It was sad but true. That's how everyone seemed to be. Nothing lasted forever. Not even love. Shaydes forgot their love, gods grew apart or were separated. It was how it was. No one could stay together forever.

Death couldn't stay in love. Jaydes and Grambi couldn't. So why would Luigi be able to? Logically, he wouldn't. He had lost, right?

"Please," Death begged, his eyes softening. "There's no harm in letting the shayde go. You just need to help me convince Jaydes. For love. The world lacks it already. We cannot allow love to continue to die..."

"I don't know..." Grambi trailed off. "Talking to Jaydes... sounds hard. What makes you think she'd listen to me?" Grambi muttered, looking down.

"She'd rather listen to you than me," Death pointed out. "I don't know why, but sometimes, through NO fault of my own, I get the feeling that I annoy her..."

This made Grambi lightly chuckle to himself, but his answer still remained unsure. That's when Death slowly frowned. He didn't want to use this argument, but he had to get Grambi on his side. For Luigi. For Dimentio. For all love.

"My King... if you had a chance to get love back into your life... wouldn't you take it? I know it is far too late for me. It may even be too late for you. But this boy... this poor boy... he has no kingdom to fall back onto. He only has love, and now it is gone. Please... please help me help him. Put yourself in his shoes."

This seemed to get Grambi, as he paused, then slowly nodded. It was true. If he had the chance to start over and try again, he would take it. If he didn't have a Kingdom to run and a world to take care of, he'd be trying at this very moment. But it was too late for him.

It wasn't too late yet for Luigi however. There was still hope. "Alright... alright. If neither of us can have love, then perhaps this mortal can..." Grambi stated with a smile.

"YES! A'IGHT! THAT'S THE GRAMBI I KNOW!" Death exclaimed, patting his back and beaming, then grabbing the god's arm. "Now come on! We've got a train to catch!"

A few moments later Jaydes was waiting in her palace, when she heard a rush of footsteps from behind her. She rolled her eyes, suspecting that it was Death, here to try to convince her to let that shayde go. So she didn't turn around.

But shockingly, the voice behind her didn't belong to Death.

Grambi: What are you afraid of?

Jaydes: What?

Grambi: He's just a boy in love

Jaydes: Go back home, why don't you?

Grambi: No. I've been home long enough.
He loves that shayde, Jaydes.

Jaydes: Well... that's too bad...

Grambi: He has the kind of love for him
That you and I once had

Jaydes paused, then looked down.

Jaydes: The shayde means nothing to me.

Grambi: ... I know
But he means everything to him,

Jaydes: So?

Grambi: ... Let him go.

The king then walked closer to her, frowning as he spoke.

Grambi: Jaydes, my queen, Jaydes, my light
Jaydes, my darkness...
If you had heard how he sang tonight
You'd pity poor Luigi...
All of his sorrow won't fit in his chest
It just burns like a fire in the pit of his chest
And his heart is a bird on a spit in his chest
How long, how long, how long?

Jaydes: How long? Just as long as Jaydes is Queen
Nothing comes of wishing on stars
And nothing comes of the songs people sing
However sorry they are
Give them a piece, they'll take it all
Show them a crack, they'll tear down the wall
Lend them an ear and the Kingdom will fall
The Kingdom will fall for a song...

Grambi: What does he care for the logic of kingdoms?
The laws of your Underwhere?
It is only for love that he sings!
He sings for the love of a shayde

Jaydes: You and your pity don't fit in my bed
You just burn like a fire in the pit of my bed
And I turn like a bird on a spit in my bed
How long, how long, how long?

Grambi: How long? Just as long as I am your king
It's true the earth must die
But then the earth comes back to life
And the sun must go on rising

Jaydes and Grambi: And how does the sun even fit in the sky?
It just burns like a fire in the pit of the sky
And the earth is a bird on a spit in the sky
How long, how long, how long?
