Keep Your Head Low
(AN: This is one of my favorite songs)
Mario and Luigi progressed fairly quickly now that they were back together. Luigi followed in his brother's footsteps, holding tightly onto his guitar. Once they returned to Flipside and activated the next pure heart pillar, they quickly waked through the Dimensional doorway and onward, both with their own plans to fix everything, back into the Underwhere and along the set path their journey had sent them on.
~ Music Start ~
As the two walked through the poorer section of the Underwhere, on the opposite of the wall, they could hear the sounds of all the shaydes working. Mining into the earth and chanting the same tune over and over, as if there was nothing else left in their minds.
Shaydes: Low, keep your head, keep your head low
Oh, you gotta keep your head low
If you wanna keep your head
Oh, you gotta keep your head low
Keep your head, keep your head low
Oh, you gotta keep your head low
If you wanna keep your head
Oh, you gotta keep your head,
On the palace balcony in Jaydestown, Luvbi sat next to her mother, a bored expression on her face.
Luvbi: In the coldest time of year
Why is it so hot down here?
Hotter than a crucible
It ain't right and it ain't natural
Jaydes: Luvbi, you were gone so long
Luvbi, I was lonesome
So I built a foundry
In the ground beneath your feet
Here, I fashioned things of steel
Oil drums and automobiles
Then I kept that furnace fed
With the fossils of the dead
Luvbi, when you feel that fire
Think of it as my desire
Think of it as my desire for you!
Luigi continued following behind Mario as they made their way through Jaydestown, up along the railroad track to the Overthere, and along on their journey, softly stringing his guitar and singing to himself as he tried finding that melody, though he couldn't seem to get it right, no matter how hard he tried. The sound of the Shaydes working and mining and chanting from afar seemed to distract him. The sound of the laboring and the knowledge of their completely empty afterlives weighed the man in green down and meddled with his mind, making focus difficult.
They never even looked in each other's eyes. They never looked up. They just always kept their eyes on the ground and kept working, as if there was nothing else to look at or think about.
Shaydes/Luigi: Low, keep your head, keep your head low / La la la la la la la...
Dimentio: Is it finished?
The jester waited alone in Castle Bleck, waiting for the storm to finally settle, while the shaydes and Luigi continued chanting and singing.
The god of Death sat next to the jester, though he knew Dimentio could not see or hear him.
Death: Not yet
Dimentio shook his head and covered his ears, almost as if he could hear someone. Almost as if he knew Death was there.
Dimentio: Is he always like this?
Dimentio suddenly stood up and started walking through Castle Bleck, trying to trust that Luigi would fix everything. Though that was getting harder and harder by the minute.
Dimentio: Looking high and looking low
For the food and firewood I know
We need to find and I am
Keeping one eye in the sky and
Dimentio/Hags: Try to trust that the song he's working on / Oooooooh
Is gonna shelter us / Ooooooh
From the wind, the wind, the wind...
He continued walking when he suddenly stopped right in front of the Count's room. The door was left slightly ajar, just enough so he could see a dark book with a bright blue gem, floating in the center of the room and seeming to call to him.
Dimentio paused in the doorway, debating for a short moment, before carefully walking in and reaching for the book.
Luvbi: In the darkest time of year
Why is it so bright down here?
Brighter than a carnival
It ain't right and it ain't natural
Jaydes: Luvbi, you were gone so long
Luvbi, I was lonesome
So I laid a power grid
In the ground on which you stood
And wasn't it electrifying
When I made the neon shine!
Silver screen, cathode ray
Brighter than the light of day
Luvbi, when you see that glare
Think of it as my despair
Think of it as my despair for you!
Luigi and Mario were now in the Overthere with Bowser and Peach as well, Death following behind them.
Luigi: I can't find the tune!
Death: Luigi.
Luigi: I can't feel the rhythm
Death: Luigi!
Luigi: Queen Jaydes is deafened by a river of stone
Death: Poor boy working on a song...
Luigi: And Lady Luvbi's blinded by a river of whining
Living in an oblivion
Death: He did not see the storm coming on
Luigi: Her black gold flows
In the world down below
And Grambi's dark clouds roll in the one up above
Death/Shaydes: Look up! / Keep your head low...
Luigi: And that is the reason we're on this road
Luigi slowly came to a stop, as if he was slowly realizing.
Luigi: And the seasons are wrong
And the wind is so strong
That's why times are so hard
It's because of the gods
He suddenly looked forward.
Luigi: The gods have forgotten the song of their love!
The world seemed to pause when he suddenly began marching forward and behind Mario again.
Shaydes/Luigi: Low, keep your head, keep your head low / Singing La la la la la la la...
Oh, you gotta keep your head low / La la la la la la la...
If you wanna keep your head,
Oh, you gotta keep your head low / La la la la la la la...
Keep your head, keep your head low
Oh, you gotta keep your head low / La la la la la la
If you wanna keep your head-
Dimentio frantically turned the pages of the dark book, a panicked expression in his eyes.
Dimentio: Lookin' low and lookin' high
Hags: There is no food left to find
It's hard enough to feed yourself
Let alone somebody else
Dimentio: I'm trying to believe
That the song he's working on
Is gonna harbor me from
The wind, the wind, the wind
The jester's reading was suddenly interrupted by Nastasia at the door.
Death: Dimentio was a hungry young man
Nastasia's eyes widened at the sight of the Dark Prognosticus in his hands and immediately took it from him.
Dimentio: Give that back!
Death: He was no stranger to the wind
Dimentio: He'll destroy everything we have!
Nastasia just silently shook her head at him and shoved Dimentio back, quickly scurrying away.
Death: But he had not seen nothing,
Dimentio: Luigi...
Death: Like the mighty storm he got caught in.
Dimentio: LUIGI!
SHELTER US!
Death: Only took a minute,
Dimentio: HARBOR ME!
Death: But the WRATH of the gods was in it
Luvbi: Every year, it's getting worse
Jaydestown, hell on Earth!
Did you think I'd be impressed
With this neon necropolis?
Mother, what have you become
Coal cars and oil drums
Warehouse walls and factory floors
I don't know you anymore
And in the meantime up above
The harvest dies and people starve
Oceans rise and overflow...
It ain't right and it ain't natural
Jaydes: Luvbi, everything I do
I do it for the love of you
If you don't even want my love
I'll give it to someone who does
Someone grateful for their fate
Someone who appreciates
The comforts of a gilded cage
And doesn't try to fly away
The moment Mother Nature calls
Someone who could love these walls
That hold them close and keep them safe
And think of them as my embrace
Luigi/Shaydes/Dimentio: Singing la la la la la la la... / Low, keep your head, keep your head- / Shelter us!!!
Jaydes: Think of them as my embrace
Luigi/Shaydes/Dimentio: La la la la la la la... / Low, keep your head, keep your head- / Harbor me!!!
Jaydes: Think of them as my embrace...
Of you
~ Music End 6:31 ~
Dimentio shook his head, unable to take it anymore. He couldn't keep putting his faith into a song. If he didn't act now, there would be no worlds left to save. There wouldn't be anything left.
He'd have to go back to plan A. He'd have to go back to his original idea. No matter how much he didn't want to, he couldn't keep putting his faith in a song. If he didn't act, everything could be taken away. He could lose everything.
Meanwhile, once the heroes collected all the pure hearts, Luigi decided to stay behind in the safety of Flipside, not wishing to go forth and accidentally be used for the wrong side of the battle. So, he just stayed behind and worked on his song, planning on returning to Dimentio and Castle Bleck once the fighting was done, or once he finished his song. Whichever came first.
So, he waved his brother goodbye as Mario and the rest of the heroes stepped into Castle Bleck. Then, he sat down on the edge of Flopside tower and continued to work on his song, not afraid or worried about the storm.
Perhaps he should have been.
