It's You

After a long, long walk, Luigi finally made it to the center of Jaydestown. He frantically looked around, searching everywhere he could for Dimentio. He walked the length of the entire wall, asking each and every shayde if they had seen him. Unfortunately, they all went back to ignoring him. It seemed they only responded to him when he sang his song, so that was a bust. Nevertheless, he continued searching and searching, because he was sure as heck NOT going to be going back empty-handed. Not after such a long walk. Not ever.

He did a fairly good job at ignoring ALL of Death's advice. He looked everyone in the eye and spoke to everyone he saw, trying to find Dimentio. But sadly, there was no luck.

Until there was.

He finally saw him, working on the far north side of the wall, mining into the earth.

He looked just as beautiful as he did when he was alive. Luigi could recognize him the instant he saw him. Yes, he had looked different, but it wasn't bad different. Luigi was unsure if he had been turned into a shayde yet or not because there still was some color in Dimentio's eyes and his hair was the same. Yes, his skin was darker than before, but it may have just been due to the different lighting.

Plus, in order to become a shayde, one would have to sign the papers, and Luigi knew Dimentio would never have done that, so he couldn't have been a shayde yet, which meant there was still hope for a happy ending, right?

Luigi let a small smile breakthrough as he sprinted up to Dimentio until he was just a few feet behind him, getting down on one knee and holding the beautiful multicolored flower out to him.

Luigi: Come home with me

Dimentio immediately recognized the voice and dropped the pickaxe, turning around.

Dimentio: It's you

Luigi: It's me

Dimentio suddenly beamed and rushed up to Luigi, tightly hugging him as the memories flooded back upon seeing him.

Dimentio: Luigi!

Luigi: Dimentio!

Dimentio pulled back and grabbed Luigi's face, feeling tears well up in his eyes.

Dimentio: I called your name before

Luigi: I know!

Dimentio: You heard?

Luigi: No...
Mr. Death told me so

Luigi sighed and shook his head, standing up and tightly grabbing Dimentio's hands.

Dimentio: Whatever happened
I am to blame

Dimentio seemed to disagree as he frowned and shook his head.

Dimentio: No

Luigi: You called my name

The jester then beamed, as if that didn't matter anymore.

Dimentio: You came!
But how'd you get here?
On the train?

Luigi smiled and shook his head, turning and pointing past the wall.

Luigi: No, I walked
A long way

Dimentio: How'd you get beyond the wall?!

Luigi: I sang a song
So beautiful
Stones wept and they let me in!

He then grabbed Dimentio's hands once again.

Luigi: And I can sing us home again

To this, Dimentio slowly frowned and let go, drawing back.

Dimentio: No, you can't

Luigi: Yes, I can!

Dimentio: No!
You don't understand...

Luigi's smile didn't quite fade. It was just replaced with a look of confusion. "What do you mean?" Luigi asked, turning and trying to pull Dimentio away. "Come on. We've got to go home."

"No, Luigi!" Dimentio exclaimed, yanking his hand back. "I... I can't. I have to stay here. I can't go back!"

Luigi paused, then looked back at Dimentio, frowning now. The jester was trembling as if he was being threatened or hurt. Did... did he not want to go back? Did he not want to be with him?

"D-Dimentio?" Luigi asked, allowing his voice to soften. He carefully stepped closer to Dimentio and reached his arm out, only for the jester to shy away and look down.

"Dimentio...?" Luigi repeated. "W-What is it? I-I came to take you home. We can get out of here! Together. You and me!"

"No..." Dimentio breathed. "You... you can get out of here."

"We," Luigi corrected. "We will get out of here. I came to take you home!"

The man in green then handed the flower to Dimentio, taking the jester's no longer gloved hands and closing those fingers around the living flower. Luigi and the flower, likely the only living things down there in Jaydestown.

Dimentio bit his lip to prevent himself from crying as he looked at the beautiful flower, briefly bringing it closer to himself as if he was afraid of losing it again. But he knew that Luigi couldn't stay. And he couldn't go. He signed a deal. He was chained down here. His fate was sealed.

"Luigi..." He whispered, looking up at the man in green's bright blue eyes. "You-"

"If we hurry, we can get out before the queen notices. I know the way! It's a long walk, but we can make it! I know we can!" Luigi beamed, grabbing Dimentio's arm once again.

"Please, Luigi," Dimentio whimpered, taking his arm back once again. "Please, listen. It is too late for me. I can't go back with you."

"Nonsense!" Luigi chimed, a soft smile on his face. "I escaped before. We can escape again. I know we can!"

"You got out before because all worlds were at stake!" Dimentio pointed out. "I can't just walk out of here! It wouldn't work! I'm chained to this place!"

"No, you're not!" Luigi said, grabbing Dimentio's shoulder and smiling. "Trust me, I know Death, and he told me from a young age that souls aren't chained to the Underwhere until they sign the papers themselves and officially become shaydes, and I know you would never do that! So we can still get out of here! We can still make it! We just have to try!"

That was when the weight of what he had done really hit Dimentio. He signed the deal himself. He chose to come down here.

He was in this position because of himself. He was the reason he was stuck down here.

Why... why would he do that?! Was life really so bad that he had to sign his life away to the queen of the Underwhere just to escape? Just to make the pain all go away?

Yes, it didn't hurt anymore, but he also signed away all the good things in his life. He signed a life with Luigi away.

And the worst part? He didn't even have the heart to tell Luigi what he had done.

He just stood there, frozen in horror by the fact that this was his fault. Frozen by the fact that he did this to himself.

Yes, Luigi was here. And yes, seeing him helped him remember himself for a moment, but he knew that once Luigi went back home, all his memories would go with him. He knew nothing would change. He was still stuck. What mattered now was getting Luigi out of here before the Queen spotted him and punished him for being out of place.

"Luigi, please listen to me. You have to get out of here." Dimentio begged, even though the idea of Luigi leaving him again made him sick to the stomach. "Y-You... you have to go before she... before she..."

"No. Dimentio. I am not going back without you. I promised myself I'd take you home. I promised-"

"Well, well, well...." Jaydes suddenly chimed from afar. Luigi and Dimentio both suddenly froze, then slowly looked up to see who, but the Queen of the Underwhere looking down upon them all from her balcony on her palace. She immediately turned and disappeared into her castle, most likely coming down so she could take care of this herself.
