I Remember Flowers
Dimentio carefully stepped outside, no longer himself. Yes, his face held the same shape, but his skin was a darker grey than it was before. He wore a size small uniform and a headlamp on his head for mining. They placed a pickaxe in his hands and sent him outside to work on the wall.
His hair was still the same jet black color, gently brushing over his eyes. But his eyes... they were different. They weren't quite white yet, but instead of his left eye being glowing yellow it was more faded. And instead of a normal black eye, his right looked more of a grey color. It was as if the color in them had been dulled down.
The queen said that as time went on his eyes would shift to a white color just like everyone else's. He wasn't quite sure what to think of it, though. He wasn't sure if he was happy because it meant that he was leaving the hardships of his old life behind, or saddened by the fact that he had been forced to change so much.

But he didn't have to think anymore, so he felt okay. He just stepped outside, waiting for further instructions, when the hags appeared in front of him.
It was strange... he had heard their voices for so long, but never knew what they actually looked like until seeing them just now.
Hags: The deal is signed?
Dimentio: Yes
Hags: About time
Get on the line
Dimentio paused, then shook his head, as if trying to explain himself to them.
Dimentio: I did what I had to do!
The hags all exchanged glances, the gestured to all the others.
Hags: That's what they did too
They immediately shoved Dimentio forward toward all the other workers.
Death: Now in Jaydestown there were a lot of souls
Shaydes: Low, keep your head, keep your head
Death: Working on the wall with all their might
Shaydes: Oh, you gotta keep your head
Death: You see, they kept their heads down low
Shaydes: If you wanna keep your head
Death: You couldn't quite see their faces right,
But you could hear them singing
Timpani and Blumiere: Low, keep your head, keep your head
Death: Swinging their hammers in the cold, hard ground
You can hear the sound of the pickaxe ringin'
Timpani and Blumiere: If you wanna keep your head
Death: And they called it-
Shaydes: Freedom
Dimentio nervously looked around at all the empty faces.
Dimentio: I'm Dimentio
Doesn't anybody hear me?
The hags all smirked as the shaydes completely ignored him.
Hags: They can hear
But they don't care
No one has a name down here
Ms. Jaydes set you free
To work yourself into the ground
Free to spend eternity
In the factory
And the warehouse
Where the whistles scream
And the foreman shouts
And you're punchin' in
And punchin' in
And punchin' in
And you can't punch out!
Hags/Shaydes: And you're way down Jaydestown / oh, keep your head, keep your head low
Way down Jaydestown / oh, you gotta keep your head low
Way down Jaydestown / if you wanna keep your head
Way down under the ground! / Keep your head low
Dimentio waved his hand in front of Timpani's face but she still continued working as if he wasn't there.
Dimentio: Why won't anybody look at me?!
Hags: They can look
But they don't see
You see, it's easier that way
Your eyes will look like that someday
Down in the river of oblivion
You kissed your little life goodbye
And Jaydes laid her hands on you
And gave you everlasting life!
And everlasting overtime
In the mine, the mill, and the machinery
Your place on the assembly line
Replaces all your memories
Hags/Shaydes: Way down Jaydestown / oh, keep your head, keep your head low
Way down Jaydestown / oh, you gotta keep your head low
Way down Jaydestown / if you wanna keep your head
Way down under the ground! / Keep your head low
Dimentio felt his eyes widen as he turned to the hags, nervous.
Dimentio: What do you mean I'll look like that?!
Hags: That's what it looks like to forget
Dimentio: Forget what?
Hags: Who you are.
And everything that came before
He paused, then looked down at his hands and dropped the pickaxe.
Dimentio: I have to go!
Hags: Go where?
Dimentio: Go back!
The hags smirked in amusement, then slowly began to circle him.
Hags: Oh?
And where is that?
So what was your name again?
Dimentio paused to think about it.
Uh oh...
Hags: You've already forgotten.
Death: You see, it's like I said before
A lot can happen behind closed doors
Dimentio was a hungry young man, but he wasn't hungry anymore
What he was instead, was dead-
Dead to the world, anyway
You see, he went behind those doors
And signed his life away
Dimentio slowly kneeled down and picked the pickaxe up again, looking down at it and wondering why he couldn't remember his name.
Hags: Saw that wheel up in the sky
Heard the big bell tolling
A lot of souls have gotta die
To keep the Rust Belt rollin'
A lot of spirits gotta break
To make the Underwhere go-'round
Way down Jaydestown...
Dimentio took a deep breath and thrust the pickaxe into the ground, just like the other shaydes.
Hags and Shaydes: Way down under the ground...

Why can't I remember my name, he asked himself as he mined. Where was here? Where was back? Who even was he?! Was he even a he?!
The answer to all of those was that it simply didn't matter. Not anymore. He was a shayde. A shayde working on a wall. A shayde who was free. A shayde who wasn't hungry or cold. He was safe. It didn't matter who he was. It didn't matter who he would be. He knew who he would be now. This was him. This was all there ever would be of him.
But... was he ever something more than this? He hadn't always been here, he at least knew that. His memories seemed so close. He remembered a moment ago, so why couldn't he remember now?! How could he have already forgotten so quickly?

Dimentio continued to raise and lower the pickaxe, bringing it down upon the ground over and over again as he tried recalling life before this. As he tried remembering anything other than working on the wall.
He could see bits and pieces, but it was all so fuzzy. He couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't anymore. Was there ever even life before this? How did he even get down here? Was there even a world beyond this wall?
Without anyone to help him remember, without any reason to remember, it was hard to tell.
But... then he recalled something.
There was one last thing that his mind wouldn't let go of just yet.
Dimentio: What I wanted was to fall asleep.
Close my eyes and disappear
Like a petal on a stream
A feather on the air...
He softly closed his eyes as he continued mining, trying to remember more.
Dimentio: Lily-white and poppy red
I trembled when she laid me out
"You won't feel a thing," she said, "when you go down..."
He sighed and opened his eyes, still mining into the ground, not even growing tired. Not feeling anything but emptiness.
Dimentio: "Nothing gonna wake you now..."
He briefly shook his head, looking at the large dent the pickaxe was made in the ground. How long had he even been here? Was he making good progress? Or was he slow? He couldn't even tell. What was time? Did it even matter anymore?
Dimentio: Dreams are sweet until they're not
Men are kind until they aren't
Flowers bloom until they rot and fall apart...
He sighed and looked around himself at all the other workers surrounding him, who didn't even acknowledge him.
It was like he wasn't even there.
Dimentio: Is anybody listening?
I open my mouth
And nothing comes out
Nothing, nothing gonna wake me now...
He continued mining into the ground, accepting the fact that no one could hear him. He wasn't sure how he even felt about it.
Did he even feel anymore?
He guessed not.
Until he was suddenly hit with something.
A memory of someplace else.
A warm feeling.
He slowly looked up, eyes softening at the memory.
Dimentio: Flowers...
He briefly smiled to himself.
Dimentio: I remember fields
Of flowers
Soft beneath my heels
Walking in the sun
I remember someone
Someone by my side
Turned his face to mine
And then I turned away
Into the shade...
He then allowed his smile to fade, along with the memory. Because he couldn't remember what the person even looked like.
What his name even was.
He wished he could have at least held onto his memories. Even if his life was gone, he wanted to still hold those memories closely.
Dimentio: You,
The one I left behind
If you ever walk this way
Come and find me,
Lying in the bed I made...
