The Space Between Dream and Reality
Jay drove up to his house after a long day at work. He has a high position in Borg Industries and all he wanted was to see his wife and kids after a long and hard day. His wife doesn't currently have a job. She lost her previous last 2 months ago and has just been staying home to look after the kids while trying to find a new job. Jay reassured her that his paycheck could cover them and she didn't need to work anymore, but she insisted that she didn't want to be dependent on Jay.
"Yes, we have them."
"Jay!"
"Lloyd!"
"Let them go!"
Jay looked around after hearing the voices. There was nobody there. Jay started to think he was going crazy. He started hearing voices a day ago. He doesn't know why. He doesn't know what they mean. He started thinking back and it seems like everything before two weeks ago is just a blur. His kids are 5, but he can't remember their first birthday.
He decided he should probably get inside before one of the neighbors comes out and starts trying to have a conversation with him that he really doesn't feel like getting into. He managed to get inside without one of the neighbors coming out. When he walked inside, he was immediately greeted by his twins, a son and a daughter, Justin and Alex. They both ran up to him and grabbed his legs. "Well, hello to you too," Jay said.
Jay then spotted his wife coming out of the kitchen. "Jay!" Nya said as she walked up to her husband and hugged him. "You were supposed to be home an hour ago."
"Sorry. I got held up in a meeting."
"Well, I'm glad you're home and I think the kids are too."
"I don't know. Are you guys happy?" he asked the kids who were still holding onto his legs.
The family had a nice dinner. They talked about their day. Justin and Alex talked a lot about their day in school. Jay thought they could talk forever if he let them. Although, the two kids eventually got into a fight about who did the best drawing of a dragon. Nya had told them they are both amazing artists, but that wasn't good enough for them and they continued arguing. Jay put both pictures on the fridge using magnets and for some reason, that got the argument to stop. Neither Jay nor Nya understood how that got their kids to stop arguing, but they were glad.
"I caught two ninja and I will catch the others. They won't know what is a dream and what is reality."
Jay heard a voice again and looked around. It wasn't his wife's voice and it definitely didn't belong to his kids. "Jay, is everything alright?" Nya asked worriedly after seeing Jay look around.
"Yeah, everything is fine," Jay said.
Later, both kids were put to bed and Jay and Nya decided having an early night would be nice. Nya was already asleep, her head resting on Jay's chest. Jay couldn't sleep no matter how hard he tried. Something didn't feel right. He knows he shouldn't feel that way. He has a beautiful wife and kids, but something still felt off. He couldn't explain it. He thinks it has something to do with the voices that he has been hearing, but he doesn't know what it is. Maybe he's going crazy.
He decided he needed some fresh air. He gently moved Nya off of him and walked out of the bedroom. He walked outside and onto the porch. He looked up at the stars. He was hoping that it would calm down how much his mind was racing. All of a sudden nothing felt right. He felt like there was something missing. He didn't know what it was. His family was here. His life was here. Why did it feel like he was meant to be somewhere else? Like he was meant to be someone else?
"Trouble sleeping?" Jay recognized that voice as one of his neighbors. He looked up and to his right to see his neighbor, Lloyd, standing there.
"Hey Lloyd," Jay said. "I guess I'm having a bit of trouble sleeping tonight. You?"
"Yeah," Lloyd said. "I don't know how to explain it. Something doesn't feel right."
"I feel the exact same way. It feels like there's something I forgot about."
"So do I." It stayed silent between the two of them for a couple of minutes until...
"Let them go!"
"Ninja, glad you could join us!"
"You have no right to keep them here!"
Both Jay and Lloyd immediately started looking around. Jay noticed Lloyd was looking around like he was. "You heard that too?" he asked.
"Yes, I did," Lloyd responded. "I thought I was going crazy."
"So did I. We should find out where those voices are coming from."
Lloyd nodded. "I agree."
The two walked away from their houses and ended up in the park. Neither knew where they were going, but they felt like they needed to go that way. It felt like something was pulling them that way. As they got further into the park, they noticed a bright white light that looked like it was surrounding a door. Jay and Lloyd looked at each other and then back in the direction of their houses. The question before them was do they keep going or turn back? They decided to keep walking towards the door and opened it.
Jay gasped as he woke up. Everything immediately started flooding back to him. The mission he was on with Lloyd. They thought the mission was almost done and then everything went downhill.
"Jay?" he looked up and saw Nya standing over the bed he was on looking worried. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah," Jay said as Nya helped him up. Once he stood up, his legs felt like jelly. He guessed that's what happens when you don't use your legs for two weeks. Nya kept a tight grip on his arm to help keep him standing. The team guided Jay and Lloyd out of the building and got the to the Bounty.
Once they were on the Bounty, Jay and Lloyd explained the dream world they were in. The others were just glad to have them back.
Later, Jay and Nya were cuddled up in Nya's room like they had planned two weeks ago. "I know we're not planning on having kids yet, but I think I know what we're going to name our kids," Jay said.
Nya smiled at her boyfriend. "Oh yeah," Nya said. "What names did you have in mind?"
"For a boy, Justin. For a girl, Alex."
"Justin and Alex. I like it."
