Even If It's Just Pretend

Summary: Mr Kane, Joe and Caspar's drama teacher decides that he will give them extra credit towards an exam if they can complete a task. That task being to convince everybody in their drama class that they are dating.
WARNINGS: Comments hinting homophobia, not major.

Drama class was Joe's favourite class. He felt this adrenaline when he got on that stage, making him feel happy and like he could do anything. And that was the thing about it, he was a character; he could do anything.

Joe's friend, Louis, said that Joe only liked acting because he got to be someone other than himself. But to Joe that wasn't true. He liked himself, he was comfortable in his own skin. It wasn't his fault that Louis isn't.

His teacher, Mr Kane, told everybody that their lesson was over. Most people groaned, yet some people cheered. He didn't understand that - how could someone not love drama?
"Uh, Joe and Caspar, could you stay for me for five minutes at the end please?" Mr Kane called out, making people instantly look at him and Caspar.

Joe's face instantly turned red from all the attention, and he nodded while walking over to him. Caspar did the same, not affected at all by all the people constantly staring at him and threw Joe a quick smile before turning to Mr Kane to see what he wanted.

Joe didn't know Caspar that well. He'd seen him around, spoken to him a few times, done a couple drama projects with him in a group but he didn't actually know him. He only knew of him. There was quite a difference.

Mr Kane cleared his throat, "Boys," He started. "I personally think you are the strongest actors in this class, and I want you to do a...thing for me. I want to see how you deal with acting in reality, I want to see you put to the test. The thing you wouldn't expect. You both up for it?" He explained, watching their confused faces.

Joe was taken back yet still flattered, "Yeah. Defiantly." He told him.
"Me too. I'm in," Caspar added. "What do we have to do?"

Mr Kane smiled softly, "I'm glad." He admitted. "So, you know our school at the moment is dealing with equality? I want to you take a turn on that. You both need to pretend that you are dating, and you have to convince everybody in the class that you are actually dating. When everybody thinks that you are dating, I will give you both extra credit. That extra credit will get you into that drama school you've both wanted to be in." He explained.

Caspar's eyes widened with shock, "Us? Dating?" He spluttered out, "Us?"
Mr Kane took a long, exasperated sigh to prove his point, "Of course you won't be dating in real life. Are you both up for it?" He questioned. They both nodded at the same time, and a happy grin appeared on Mr Kane's face.

"Next drama lesson, and everywhere else I guess, you need to pretend like you are a couple. When everybody, every single person in this class is convinced that you are dating; that's when you'll get your extra credit. I believe in you boys, I feel like you could go far." He told them.

Joe looked at Caspar, "Guess we're a couple then?" He said to him once Mr Kane had dismissed them and walked away.
Caspar scoffed, "A couple of idiots. We aren't gonna be treated the same after this. People will think we're gay. I won't get another girlfriend. Don't screw this up, we better get that extra credit." Caspar muttered harshly, spitting out his words like venom.

Joe was taken aback, he'd never seen this side of Caspar before, "Let's just get this all over with, and then we can get that extra credit. It all be fine, don't worry." Joe assured.
Caspar turned around to him, his eyes burning with flame ready to burn Joe alive. Yet Joe didn't flinch, he didn't move, he stayed put. The other times he'd met Caspar he was really kind, but apparently that was part of the drama act too.
And Caspar just walked away.

Joe knew a few things, and this was going to be harder than he thought.

It was now the next day, and Joe and Caspar are stood outside their drama room wondering what they are going to do.

"Shall we just walk in while holding hands, and say we're dating? I think that might convince everybody." Caspar suggested.
Joe nodded, "Yeah. Like we can't just walk in making out. That would be convincing, but not really the best idea."

Caspar took a step back and raised his eyebrow, "Yeah. And I'm not making out with you, not ever." He whispered not wanting Joe to hear it. But he did.
Joe tried to change the subject, feeling awkward, "Let's go in. Now, I'm gonna need your hand. And I know that's the worst thing ever for you, but you need to corporate." Joe commented.

Caspar huffed before holding his hand out, and Joe gently took it. Caspar's hand was big, but also sweaty. Was he nervous? He knew that some people in the school weren't that excepting, but they would never do anything. Besides, it's all pretend.

It's not real.

"Here goes nothing." Joe breathed out, before opening the door and walking in with Caspar. The class instantly turned to look at them, most of them looking at their linked hands. A few gasps echoed around and hushed whispers travelled.

Mr Kane, however, was sat on his chair smiling at the two. He cleared his throat, "Oh, so are you two dating now?" He teased.
The extra credit better be worth it.
"Yes," Caspar told everybody. "And we don't care what you think."

Most of the girls squealed, actually some of the boys did too, "That's so cute!" Oliva squealed. "How long have you been together?" She asked.
"Uh," Joe stumbled over his words. "Since yesterday." He lied.

Dan turned to Phil, "Told you Joe would get a boyfriend. I win." He whispered in Phil's ear.
Phil chuckled, "Bear, I told you Joe would get a boyfriend. I win." He told Dan, laughing slightly.
"Okay then," Dan shrugged. "We both win."

They both sat down, ignoring everybody still freaking out about them holding hands.
"At least it's not just us," Caspar said. "Even though everybody kind of predicted when Dan and Phil came out as a couple."
Joe nodded, "Yeah, we aren't the only gay couple in here." He added.

"Not a couple..." Caspar commented quietly. Joe heard that too.

The lesson went on, and it was different, but nobody actually treated them any different. He didn't know what Caspar was so afraid of.

-

It was now the next day, and Caspar was walking into school alone. Yesterday had been fine, the worst that happened is someone tried to trip them both up, but Joe was right. Everybody was really excepting, and told off the person that tried to trip them up.

He didn't know why he was so scared. Or, he did know actually. He just didn't want to believe it. Caspar just couldn't wait for this all to be over.

Though he felt bad, as he had made comments all yesterday about everything. How people would treat them differently and more, but he decided to let it slip.

"Hey, Caspar!" Someone called for him behind him. He turned around to see Dan and Phil, "Wait up."
Caspar stopped in his tracks, waiting for them to catch up, "Yeah?"

Phil stumbled over a little, before smiling sheepishly at him, "We just wanted to say congratulations for you know...being with Joe." Dan told him.

"Yeah, we can tell you really like him. You went all Heart Eyes Howell on him in drama." Phil teased, earning a nudge from Dan as they began to walk away.
"Hey!" Dan yelled playfully. "You should feel honoured that I love you that much!"

They had another drama lesson today, and they were sure that it would over soon. Everyone seemed to believe that they were actually dating.

-

It had been two weeks. And everybody believed that they were dating, but they couldn't seem to break up. Every time Joe bought it up, Caspar felt this sinking feeling and would change the subject. He couldn't like Joe like that, could be? He'd spent so much time with him, it would be possible to gain feelings for him...

No. No way. Never.

They were now in their drama lesson, and Mr Kane took them out.
"Well done boys," He congratulated. "Everybody is convinced you both are dating. Even me, are you sure there's not something going on?" He teased.
Joe and Caspar nervously laughed, they weren't even sure theirselves.

Mr Kane noticed the tension, and changed the subject, "Okay, well, now you just have to tell the class that you've broken up. That should be easy, you've just got to say it. I'll put on your extra credit, you've both done so well!" He conformed.
Caspar's eyes widened slightly, "Break up? Like not together anymore break up?" He questioned.

Mr Kane nodded, "Well, you weren't really together in the first place to be honest. I mean, it wasn't all real."
Caspar breathed out, "Of course I know that."
Joe smiled, "Thank you Mr Kane for all of this. It means a lot." He told him. "Let's go and break up then."
Mr Kane returned the smile, "Come in when you are both ready." He said.

Caspar and Joe were now left in silence, "So shall we just tell everybody we aren't working out anymore?" Joe broke the silence.
"It's probably just me who feels this way but, do you not want to break up?" Caspar questioned.

Joe took a step back, "Oh," He muttered. "You mean you want us to be a couple?"
"I don't..." Caspar started. "I don't know."

"One question though, why were you scared at the start?" Joe asked him.
Caspar sighed, "I was scared I'd get feelings for you. There's no point denying it now." Caspar smiled widely at Joe. "So, wanna date or something?"

Joe narrowed his eyes, "How could you?" He stammered. Caspar's face fell in a instant. "You treated me like dirt only two weeks ago, saying how you'll never kiss me or anything. You said you didn't want people to think that you're gay! How could you think that I'd be so low to go to someone who I know, doesn't and never will care?"

Caspar tried to reason with him, "I've changed, I promise. It's only been a short time but-"
"Two weeks." Joe pointed out. "People don't change in two weeks. People don't change at all."

His words hit Caspar like a ton of bricks, and then he realised how Joe must of felt when Caspar kept making all those comments. And Joe was right, people don't change. They become better.

"Do you even think that I love you back?" Joe added. "I never even said I did. I never even said I was gay yet you still carried on to insult me!" Caspar bowed his head in shame.
Caspar cleared his throat, "Give me two weeks." He said.

Joe looked up at him, the flame was now in his eyes, "Two weeks?" Joe questioned. "Why?"
"Give me two weeks to prove I'm sorry, and then if you want me to leave you alone, I will."

Joe paused for a moment, "Okay." He told him. "But only two weeks. Now, we have to break up still so let's get this over with."

"Okay." Caspar said back. "But everything that happened, let me tell you this, it wasn't pretend. None of it was pretend."
Joe looked up, "How can I believe you?"

Caspar took a deep breath, "Just, say you'll see me again. Even if it's just pretend."

Don't forget to comment and vote if you liked it :)
I didn't know how to end this, so sorry for the bad ending.
