The Forgotten Story by Migratory Birds
Frost kidnapped Sun,
taking her away to a faraway cave
—she can never escape.
Trees, flowers, vines,
anything with green cried,
but they couldn't free her
bound in an ancient spell to Earth,
they couldn't leave.
Frost brought Winter,
a moaning maiden captured
in the cage of his heart.
She will do his bidding,
and weep later in sorrow
at the destruction he made her cause.
Trees, flowers, vines,
anything with green cried,
but they still forgave her
and grew stronger against her each year,
until one of them died.
Winter begged Frost to let Sun free,
but he refused her pleas and laughed,
"The Earth is mine.
The death of one of them,
is not my problem."
Each death of green broke Winter,
she cried, and cried, and begged
but Frost wouldn't listen,
and only captured Sun could defeat him.
"Enough is enough," Winter picked herself up.
Leaving Frost's side,
she went to the cave to see Sun.
Sun stood proud with her head held high.
"No Frost will ever break me."
Admiring her strength,
Winter set her free.
On the back of her mare,
Apollo, she rode to Frost,
he cowered at her power,
begging forgiveness.
But Sun would hear none of it.
The moment her rays touched the soil,
defeating Frost and his men,
all the land rejoiced
and Sun promised to never let this happen
ever again.
But this joy lasted only briefly
for the year was reset
and everyone, everything,
forgot the battle,
forgot Winter's courage,
Sun's strength,
and Frost's cowardice.
Each year is repeated,
in the exact same way but,
none will remember
except the birds migrating
with this story coloring their feathers,
and giving them a song of Spring.
They are the only ones
that know about the promise of Sun.
So, each year, they believe in her.
And return home again, and again.
