The Cherub

Note: Another kind of promise in the romance genre. This is a lifelong one. (2018)

=======

The cherub clasped his hands,

waiting,

biting his lip.

He never doubted his arrows,

and knew the two couples would marry,

but each marriage he made happen,

still made him worry.

* * *

"I—"

In the millisecond before her lips moved,

to say the words which will bind them together,

forever, he wondered,

"Am I ready to commit?

This is not about dating and always ready to let go

if need be.

This is not about dreaming of a happily ever after.

After this, who knows what will happen."

In the millisecond before his lips moved,

to say the words that showed the world

love can come in many forms,

he wondered,

"Am I ready to commit?

This is not about proving people wrong.

This is not about celebrating our 10th anniversary,

and throwing big parties and worrying about nothing,

and live paradise."

He gazed at her

(He gazed at him)

and stared at her lips

(his lips)

frozen in time.

He (and he) recalled all those times he kissed those lips and,

all those times those lips kissed his (and his).

But are they ready to commit?

The cherub sighs,

had he made the right choice?

"Living together is not the same as dating,

or being engaged,

or being in happy love."

Then,

both grooms remembered

those time of just being together,

loving every moment,

every joke, every serious talk,

every time they looked in the eyes,

of the one they loved,

they both knew.

He wanted to spend every day with her,

and he wanted to spend every day with him,

no matter what happened and,

"until death do us part".

Time slowly moved forward.

"I do," she said.

"I do," he said.

Four families rejoiced.

The marriages were sealed.

Bride and groom,

groom and groom,

turned around and smiled,

love filling the churches.

* * *

The cherub closed his eyes,

satisfied.

His deed was done.
