Stood Up

Note: Slightly based on my own experiences. If you have ever been stood up, maybe you can relate to this situation. Maybe you can even relate to it, if you have stood someone up. (2018)

============

I stuck my hands in my pockets,

and looked at the clock's face,

teasing me about the time.

But I knew he would never be late.

I turned my head to watch,

boring, unmoving summer clouds,

and no birds to entertain me.

The clock face still teasing me.

"He won't be late,"

I say out loud, hearing the nerves in my voice.

Footsteps lifted my spirits,

but only an old man and his dog

would come through such a bleak park.

The clock face tells me he's late.

"But, he will come."

I cross my defiant arms.

Two minutes, three, four,

time goes by without me,

without my day and I doubt,

but not out loud that...maybe...

Five minutes, ten, fifteen,

now I'm defeated, giving up,

but still foolishly hoping.

Twenty, twenty-five, nope.

I moved my stiff legs and walked away,

angry.

"He promised!"

The clock face says,

"He's never coming."
