Sand in a Bottle
Waves tumble, pull, and search,
for a missing bottle with a letter.
Thirty years ago,
in these very waters,
a little girl set sail a bottle
with a message—a promise.
A promise to be good,
a promise to care for her siblings,
a promise to love, and be loved,
and promise to forgive.
Waves tumble, pull, and dig,
for the missing bottle with the letter.
Thirty years ago,
a little girl with sandbags on her shoulders,
poured all that sand into a letter,
and set it sailing in these very waters.
Each grain, a promise.
Each promise, a truth.
Each truth, hiding more lies,
the deeper dug into the sand.
But waves tumble, pull, and search,
for the missing bottle,
set sail thirty years ago,
by a little girl who promised
all and everything she could not keep.
A promise to be good,
and never forgive.
A promise to care for her siblings
—one quickly broken.
A promise to love, and be loved,
and exploit that love over and over.
A promise to forgive,
but enact revenge,
and fill the empty sandbags,
with sins.
