What was lost

¤ ¤ ¤

After sneaking from the Dark Arts classroom Janna finally fell asleep in the Room of Requirements with Ash bundled in her arms like a donut shaped pillow.

After a few days Janna finally had a good night's rest after nights of being unable to sleep, the boys had been told about what happened and about the resurrection by Janna, they were baffled by her explanation of the events up to where she admitted herself Professor Potter.

The next day was Saturday, Janna woke up to the faint tic, tic, tic, ticing at the window that showed an early summer morning, an owl with rufous feathers and a stingy little face with narrow, pale yellow eyes watched Janna as it tapped its sharp black beak on the window, demanding to be let in so he could give her the letter in his beak. Janna hurried to the owl, opening the window the bird fluttered onto her shoulder, dropping the letter into Janna's hands with a soft trill.

Janna read on the parchment envelope, Snuffles. Hurriedly Janna opened the letter then read.

Dear Niece

We arrived at Andromeda's home last night, she was a little shocked to find us at the door but let up in regardless, her face gave true meaning to looking like you've seen a ghost. I expect you have told Harry, I reckon he is not at all pleased with the resurrection moving up on the schedule. Just tell Harry his mother is waiting for him if he scolds you too harshly.
A few of us have been given new identities, not me, though, we're not sure what the Ministry Officials will make of me in the forest, hopefully they brush me off as a ghost if questioned... Although most of us are found in most history books so we will not be able to manage to hide ourselves, unless we're Tonks.
I will send a letter to Harry, urging him that you should stay with me—I have noticed that Mr. Winslow has not come up yet—Remus has added that we have far more experience handling the furry little problem. Speaking of, I  will come to the full moon, I'll be leaving a day before and I will arrive as Snuffles to not attract attention to myself. Meanwhile, Janna, please stay safe, keep clear of anything dodgy, I had seen a few things lurking in that castle that would want to cause you harm, just stay with your friends as much as you can.

Snuffles

For once in Janna's life she actually wanted a full moon to come quicker, more than anything. A fit of giggles overcame Janna, she thought she was going insane but at least she would have Sirius with her, she could not help but laugh in excitement.

June, the full moon was a couple of days after the month began, Janna went to her extra lesson... or what was supposed to be an extra lesson, McGonagall mostly asked Janna about who she had resurrected and where they were. While Janna explained to McGonagall the Professor processed the information with a stiffened expression, a little pride snuck out from her stern face, Janna could not help but smile at that gesture while walking to the Whomping Willow over the green with the taste of Wolfsbane lingering in her mouth.

Ash was not with Janna tonight, she left him to sleep in the Room of Requirements because he was still recovering from transporting Sirius, a full grown man, over a long distance. At least Janna would be able to spend the night with Snuffles. While Janna limped across the green she relished the lilac sky that faced to a deep ultramarine rimming the west horizon. The twinkle of the early stars catching her sensitive eyes and the warm summer wind rushing through her sleeves to grove between her scars, as though filling in where the skin should have been whole.

Soon as the sun began to sink behind her Janna took a stone from the ground, she tossed the cold pebble into the air a few times before, with a swift swing, she hit the knot of the tree that froze in place. Stroking her forearms Janna moved through the cold tunnel after sliding into the hole, the air was chilly down here, but when she began to get near to the trap door Janna felt warmth again.

When she opened the trapdoor ajar she saw a mass of shaggy black fur, she opened the door further, letting the door creak on its hinges to rest above the floor. Snuffles wagged his tail happily while turning his large head to look at her "Hello Snuffles" she scratched his head when she sat cross legged at his side after closing the trapdoor.

"You don't look sick!" Sirius pressed his palm to her forehead as soon as he popped into his human form.

Janna shrugged "I'm lucky this month, you should see me any other full moon" Sirius stood up and lifted Janna with him, she hugged him, relishing the warmth that came from him, she was mostly leaning on his because of her left leg "It's so great to see you, I missed you, I have been a bit lonely without you in the portraits"

Sirius must have felt Janna leaning on his because he gently lifted her to carry her to the slanted sofa in the room with the piano and the loose plank in the wall to get out of the Shack "I did send the letter to Harry about you staying with me..."

"And?" Janna asked as he sat on the couch with her on his lap, her head resting on the pillow at the armrest and her legs stretched over the over arm.

Sirius shrugged "Nothing, he hasn't responded" he leaned on the back of the sofa, he twirled Janna's hair between his fingers "I really don't need Harry to oversee my requests," he lowered his voice "apparently I am  a free man..." Sirius took in a deep breathe, taking a glance around the room "You should stay with me, regardless, I'm your uncle" he patted her head, gently.

With a bit of a wheezy breath Janna laughed lowly, she curled under his arm "Where will we stay then?" Janna mocked him jokingly, Sirius put an arm under her back to keep her there incase she fell asleep.

"Moony has an old cottage, if the place is still standing we can move in, at the moment he is keen on staying with Tonks at her mother's... You should have seen him before I left, he was entirely confused on why he wasn't feeling the effects of the moon, he's decided to sleep in a different bed tonight, just incase." Sirius laughed the sound was a bark-like thing "I know Remus  knows better but he has always been cautious, more than I used to remember, though..." Sirius pursed his lips, then breathed in deeply "something has changed about everyone who was brought back, Remus isn't a werewolf, James is back to being a fifteen year old, Dumbledore hasn't touched a single sweet, Moody doesn't have his glass eye, even though he had it in the clearing, and then Lily... she's been seeing the worst of everyone, it's not like her. It's  like they had lost something, I'm not sure if I have"

"What is something that makes you, you?" Janna asked tiredly as she sank slightly into sleepiness.

Sirius grinned, a light came to his face "My charm, even being over fifty years old and girls in Hogsmead still gave me a pat on the head as a dog. I'm worried about what those Death Eaters lost, who knows? Maybe their humanity or sense of reasoning"

"I think they had lost that long ago, Sirius" Janna murmured, remembering Greyback's eyes from the full moon before.
